A large number of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) supporters held a protest rally in Lahore's Liberty Chowk against the ouster of former prime minister and party chairman Imran Khan through a no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition.
The charged PTI supporters, including women and children, showed their solidarity with Khan during the rally that started at 9 pm on Sunday and lasted till 3 am on Monday.
Big gatherings were also reported from other parts of the Punjab province, including Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Vehari, Jehlum and Gujrat districts. Islamabad and Karachi also witnessed major gatherings of PTI supporters.
Protests broke out in different cities after 9 pm on Sunday and continued for several hours on the call of Khan.
Earlier on Sunday, ousted prime minister Khan tweeted that "today marked the beginning of a freedom struggle" against what he said was a "foreign conspiracy of regime change" in Pakistan.
In an attempt to galvanise his supporters, he said "it is always the people who protected their own sovereignty and democracy." In another tweet, Khan posted an aerial view of the Lahore rally and said he never saw such a big crowd. "Never have such crowds come out so spontaneously and in such numbers in our history, rejecting the imported govt led by crooks," Khan said.
PTI's local leadership was leading the protest. The charged workers and supporters of the party were chanting slogans against the US, which Khan claims to be behind the ouster of his government.
They were also shouting slogans against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif, who is expected to be elected as the new prime minister on Monday; Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chair Asif Ali Zaradri and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman for allegedly plotting against Khan's government at the behest of the US.
Most placards being carried by the protesters read "Imported government not acceptable." This (Imported government not acceptable) was also a top trend in Pakistan with over 2.7 million tweets till early hours of Monday.
Former federal minister and PTI senior leader Shireen Mazari said in a tweet: "Such amazing scenes from across Pak and from abroad --- Pakistanis have rejected US instigated regime change. Two of my favourite individual placards! #ImportedGovernmentRejected #RevolutionBlackedOut." She also complained of Pakistani media for not giving proper coverage to massive protests across the country, especially in Lahore and Karachi.
The PTI has thanked the masses to come out on roads in the support of Imran Khan to reject foreign intervention. "Shukriya (thanks) Pakistan! We're a nation that stands against any foreign intervention, we’re a nation which stands with @ImranKhanPTI," the PTI said in statement posted on its Twitter account.
Despite the PTI government's hectic efforts to avoid voting on the no-confidence motion against Khan, the joint Opposition succeeded in its month-long efforts to oust Khan from the prime minister's office as 174 members of the 342-member National Assembly voted against him after a day of high drama.
Khan, 69, became the first premier in the country's history to be sent home after losing the trust of the House.
PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry had also called on the people to stage protests after Isha prayers while speaking to the media in Islamabad earlier in the day.
He said that Khan not leading a massive movement would amount to a "betrayal with the country's politics and Constitution".

Khan, who came to power in 2018 with promises to create a ‘Naya Pakistan’, was dogged by claims of economic mismanagement as his government battled depleting foreign exchange reserves and double-digit inflation.
He apparently also lost support of the powerful Army after he refused to endorse the appointment of the ISI spy agency chief last year. Finally he agreed but it soured his ties with the powerful Army, which has ruled the coup-prone country for more than half of its 75 years of existence and has hitherto wielded considerable power in the matters of security and foreign policy.
Khan wanted to keep Lt Gen Faiz Hameed as the spy chief but the army high command transferred him by appointing Corps Commander in Peshawar.
Ahead of the voting, National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser and Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri resigned.
Qaiser said he could not take part in a foreign conspiracy to oust the prime minister.
After announcing his resignation, Speaker asked Ayaz Sadiq of PML-N to chair the proceedings.
Voting on the resolution then began at 11:58pm (local time). Sadiq adjourned the house for two minutes due to the change of day at 12. The new session then began at 12:02am.
Earlier, the crucial session convened in line with a landmark Supreme Court ruling to decide the fate of Prime Minister Khan witnessed multiple adjournments and heated arguments.

China, Pakistan’s all-weather ally on Thursday reacted guardedly to the potential defeat of Prime Minister Imran Khan's government in Parliament, urging all political parties in the country to stay united in the interest of stability and development.
“China is committed to non-interference policy,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a media briefing here while replying to a question about whether Beijing is concerned that any change of leadership in Pakistan could impact its close strategic ties with Pakistan.
“As an all-weather strategic cooperative partner, friendly neighbour of Pakistan, China sincerely hopes that all parties in Pakistan will stay united and uphold the major interest of development and stability,” Wang Wenbin added.
Pakistan's embattled Prime Minister Khan on Wednesday effectively lost majority in Parliament after Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), a key partner of the ruling coalition, joined the ranks of the Opposition, which had tabled a no-confidence motion against his government in the National Assembly.

As political crisis gripped Pakistan, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told visiting Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a close confidant of Prime Minister Khan that Beijing has agreed to rollover USD 4.2 billion Pakistan debt due to be paid this week.
Qureshi is currently visiting China to attend the Neighbourhood Countries Foreign Ministers conference on Afghanistan.
"I am immensely happy to share that the Chinese FM has given a nod of approval on the rollover of commercial loan as well," Qureshi was quoted as saying by Pakistan daily Dawn.
The USD 4.2 billion debt, which was maturing this week, has been rolled over providing major financial relief to Pakistan, the daily reported.
Observers here say that China may not be unduly concerned about the fall of Imran Khan’s government as Beijing sees the Pakistan military as the cornerstone of its ‘ironclad” ties with Islamabad.
Also Beijing initially viewed Prime Minister Khan with reservations as he had criticised the USD 60 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor in the run up to elections.
The current political crisis leading up to Khan losing majority support in the Parliament erupted just after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit on March 21.

&ldquo;China is committed to non-interference policy,&rdquo; Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a media briefing here while replying to a question about whether Beijing is concerned that any change of leadership in Pakistan could impact its close strategic ties with Pakistan.
&ldquo;As an all-weather strategic cooperative partner, friendly neighbour of Pakistan, China sincerely hopes that all parties in Pakistan will stay united and uphold the major interest of development and stability,&rdquo; Wang Wenbin added.
Pakistan's embattled Prime Minister Khan on Wednesday effectively lost majority in Parliament after Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), a key partner of the ruling coalition, joined the ranks of the Opposition, which had tabled a no-confidence motion against his government in the National Assembly.
Khan has been claiming that the Opposition&rsquo;s no-confidence motion against him was the result of a &ldquo;foreign conspiracy&rdquo; because of his external policy and funds were being channelled from abroad to oust him from power.
As political crisis gripped Pakistan, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told visiting Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a close confidant of Prime Minister Khan that Beijing has agreed to rollover USD 4.2 billion Pakistan debt due to be paid this week.
Qureshi is currently visiting China to attend the Neighbourhood Countries Foreign Ministers conference on Afghanistan.
"I am immensely happy to share that the Chinese FM has given a nod of approval on the rollover of commercial loan as well," Qureshi was quoted as saying by Pakistan daily Dawn.
The USD 4.2 billion debt, which was maturing this week, has been rolled over providing major financial relief to Pakistan, the daily reported.
Observers here say that China may not be unduly concerned about the fall of Imran Khan&rsquo;s government as Beijing sees the Pakistan military as the cornerstone of its &lsquo;ironclad&rdquo; ties with Islamabad.

Also Beijing initially viewed Prime Minister Khan with reservations as he had criticised the USD 60 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor&nbsp;in the run up to elections.
The current political crisis leading up to Khan losing majority support in the Parliament erupted just after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi&rsquo;s visit on March 21.
Besides holding talks with Khan during his Pakistan visit, Wang had travelled to Rawalpindi the headquarters of the Pakistan Army where he held lengthy talks with its chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa during which he praised the Pakistan military&rsquo;s role in nurturing close ties.

Khan waved a purported letter at a public rally on March 27 declared that a foreign conspiracy was afoot to remove him from power, touting the Opposition’s no-confidence move against him as a testimony of “foreign funded” move to topple his government.
Several Opposition leaders had asked Khan to divulge the details of the letter while denouncing it as an effort to divert pressure and hold on to power.
Khan first took the cabinet in confidence on the letter when Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi briefed the participants about it.
It was followed by a meeting of the premier with a group of journalists who were also briefed about it.
ARY News channel said that the letter was based on the minutes of a meeting of a Pakistan embassy official with officials of the host country.
The details of the meeting were sent by the Pakistan ambassador in that country to the Foreign Office as part of internal diplomatic communication, which showed that the host country was not happy with the policy of the Pakistan government on Ukraine and its ties with Russia.
"It reads that relations with Pakistan will be affected if PM Khan remains in power," the channel quoted the Prime Minister as telling the journalists.
He also said that the contents had been shared with the powerful military establishment.
Geo News quoted the premier telling the journalists that “threatening language” was used in the letter and it also talked about the no-confidence motion against the prime minister even before it was submitted in the National Assembly.
"The premier refused to share the exact threatening words used in the letter,” the channel reported, adding the name of the country was also not disclosed.
Reportedly, Khan was also planning to summon a meeting of the National Security Committee, comprising top military and civil leadership, to discuss the letter and its implications. He may also brief Parliament in a closed-door session.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Khan's address scheduled for Wednesday evening has been postponed, confirmed PTI Senator Faisal Javed Khan.

His niece Maryam Nawaz had also made a similar claim. Maryam had alleged that they were aware that  ‘jadu, tuna’ or witchcraft is going on in Bani Gala to save Imran’s government but that will also not help.Bushra Maneka, the third and incumbent wife of Imran Khan, calls herself a Peer or a faith healer. The former cricketer had started visiting her for spiritual advice a year before he came to power. According to news agency PTI, the two got closer after the predictions made by her came true. The couple got married in 2018.The non-confidence motion has been placed in the National Assembly and the trust vote is scheduled to take place on April 3.

The joint opposition consists of major parties such as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) – of former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto – and has a strength of nearly 163 in the lower house of the Parliament. The Opposition needs a simple majority of 172 to prevail in the no-confidence vote.

US Afghan peace negotiator to visit India amid Doha talks

The US interlocutor for Afghan-Taliban talks Zalmay Khalilzad will visit India on Tuesday to hold discussions with external affairs minister S Jaishankar on the intra-Afghan talks that have started in Doha. When in India, Khalilzad is expected to share details of the Afghan peace process and appreciate India&rsquo;s constructive role in Kabul for the past 20 years.
Before his four-hour-long trip to India, Khalilzad will visit Pakistan where he will ask the Imran Khan government to takes steps so that the Taliban stays on course in the peace talks and ensure these talks with the Taliban to end the 19-year-long violence succeed.
