Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal on Monday underwent angioplasty after suffering a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match in Dhaka.
According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the incident occurred in the first innings of the 50-over-a-side contest between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club when the 36-year-old Iqbal felt pain in his chest.
Tamim, who was leading Mohammedan, fielded for just one over before being rushed to a nearby hospital.
"Initially, a helicopter was arranged for Tamim's movement to the hospital, but he could not be flown from the BKSP ground in Savar. He was later taken to the Fazilatunnesa Hospital," the report quoted match referee Debabrata Paul as saying.
The treating doctors later issued an official medical bulletin.
"He returned to us in a critical condition. We can call it a heart attack, and we subsequently did an angiogram and angioplasty to remove the blockage.
The medical procedure has gone smoothly. He is currently under observation.
"The swift coordination between the medical staff at BKSP and the hospital ensured Tamim was treated quickly," the bulletin read.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board had cancelled a scheduled board meeting this afternoon after the development.
BCB president Faruque Ahmed is at the hospital, along with other members.
Iqbal had announced his retirement from international cricket for the second time in January this year.
Earlier, in July 2023, he had made a similar announcement during an emotional press conference but reversed his decision within 24 hours following an intervention from then Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Iqbal, who last featured for the national team in 2023, has played 70 Tests and 243 ODIs, scoring 5,134 runs and 8,357 runs respectively for Bangladesh. He has also accumulated 1,758 runs in 78 T20Is.

Jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari reportedly has died of a heart attack

Jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari died of a heart attack on March 28. He was brought to Banda Medical College in the evening after he was spotted lying unconscious in his barrack. He was 63.
Recently, he was hospitalised after complaining of abdominal pain in jail. His brother Afzal Ansari claimed that Mukhtar was poisoned in jail.
Meanwhile, police have beefed up security in and around Banda in view of the development and have imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Mau, Banda, and Ghazipur.
Mukhtar had around 60 criminal cases pending against him in UP, Punjab, Delhi, and other states. Earlier on March 13, Ansari was sentenced to life imprisonment in a case related to the use of forged documents for obtaining an arms licence in 1990.
This was the eighth case in which the former five-time MLA has been convicted and sentenced by a court in UP in the past two years.
In December 2023, the MP/MLA Court in Varanasi had convicted Ansari for intimidating Mahavir Prasad Rungta, a key witness in the murder case of 26-year-old coal merchant Nand Kishor Rungta. Consequently, Ansari was sentenced to five and a half years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000.
Ansari has served as an MLA from Mau several times.&nbsp;
His name was on the list of 66 gangsters issued by Uttar Pradesh Police last year. His family members had earlier expressed apprehension that Mukhtar Ansari could be killed in a fake encounter.
The gangster-turned-politician did not contest the 2022 assembly elections and his seat was won by his son Abbas Ansari from the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP).

A newly married couple in Ghaziabad began their day with a visit to the zoo. However, within 24 hours, both were dead. A 25-year-old man, named Abhishek Ahluwalia suffered a heart attack at the zoo. His wife, Anjali, unable to bear the shock, died of suicide after jumping from the seventh floor of their building.&nbsp;
On Monday, the couple planned a visit to Delhi Zoo. As the couple reached there, Abhishek started feeling a pain in his chest, relatives said. His wife called up his friends and Abhishek was taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and then referred to Safdarjung Hospital.&nbsp;
Abhishek was declared dead later in the day. As his body reached the couple's home at Ahlcon Apartments in Ghaziabad's Vaishali, his wife couldn't deal with the shock. Anjali immediately rushed to their seventh-floor balcony and jumped. She was taken to Max Hospital, with serious injuries. On Tuesday, she breathed her last.&nbsp;
Abhishek's relative said, "After the body was brought home, she sat next to it, weeping. Then she suddenly got up and ran towards the balcony. I figured that she was going to jump. I ran after her, but before I could stop her, she had jumped."

A 65-year-old devotee Ramkrishna Srivastava, who was in Ayodhya to attend the Pran Pratishtha ceremony at the Ram Temple, suffered a heart attack on Monday. However, a timely medical intervention by IAF's rapid response team managed to save the life of the devotee.&nbsp;
After Ramkrishna Srivastava collapsed inside the temple complex, a team of BHISHM Cube led by Wing Commander Manish Gupta evacuated him within a minute of the incident and provided on-site treatment, capitalising on the critical golden hour -- the first hour following a traumatic injury or medical event which is crucial for successful emergency treatment, a statement said.
Upon initial assessment, it was found that Srivastava's blood pressure level had shot up to dangerously high level of 210/170 mm Hg, it added.
The rapid response team provided him preliminary treatment at the site. Once the patient's condition stabilised, he was taken to the civil hospital for further observation and specialised care, according to the statement.
Two Cube-BHISHM mobile hospitals under the Arogya Maitri Disaster Management project were deployed in Ayodhya to bolster medical readiness and response capabilities for the 'Pran Pratishtha' ceremony, according to a statement of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued on Sunday.
These mobile hospitals are equipped with several innovative tools designed to enhance disaster response and medical support during emergencies, the statement added.&nbsp;
