Renowned filmmaker Hansal Mehta and actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut engaged in a heated online dispute today concerning the recent crackdown on stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra for his satirical comments about Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde.
This online confrontation follows widespread discussions about the vandalization of a Mumbai studio protesting Kamra's jokes about Shinde, currently serving as Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister. The unfolding drama has drawn comparisons to the actions taken against Ranaut during the 2020 Uddhav Thackeray administration.
Hansal Mehta initially highlighted an offensive post directed at Kunal Kamra, prompting a question from a user on X, querying why he hadn't condemned the 2020 demolition of Kangana Ranaut&rsquo;s property.
Mehta responded by questioning whether Ranaut's situation involved vandalism and threats to her freedom of expression or was purely about alleged building violations.
Kangana swiftly countered by recounting her own experience. She claimed derogatory remarks were made against her, and demolition notices were served at night, leading to her property being bulldozed by morning, before legal proceedings could be initiated.
She noted the High Court eventually deemed the demolition illegal, describing how it was met with ridicule and celebration at the time.
In a pointed personal critique, Ranaut dismissed Mehta&rsquo;s creative work as inferior, labeling him insecure and mediocre. Her retort prompted Mehta, known for films such as "Shahid" and "Aligarh" and the highly acclaimed web series "Scam 1992," to reply with a succinct, "Get well soon."
Reflecting on past experiences, Mehta shared yesterday how similar incidents are not new in Maharashtra, recounting a personal ordeal from 25 years ago involving members of an undivided political party vandalizing his office and subjecting him to public humiliation over a film dialogue. This past trauma, he explained, had a lasting impact on his creativity and confidence.
Expressing his stance, Mehta emphasized that regardless of disagreements or provocations, violence and intimidation are never justified, advocating for dialogue and dignity instead.
The 2020 demolition of portions of Kangana&rsquo;s Mumbai office by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation was justified on grounds of encroachment but faced scrutiny due to its timing, amid tensions following Sushant Singh Rajput&rsquo;s death.
Ranaut had a legal victory when the Bombay High Court intervened, questioning the civic body's motivations.

Balakrishna, who was a chief guest at pre-release event for Anjali's upcoming film 'Gangs of Godavari', can be seen pushing her when she couldn't hear him.
Mehta's reaction to the incident sparked debate on social media, with some defending Balakrishna's actions due to his stature in the Telugu film industry.
A social media user came to Balakrishna's defense, pointing out that he and Anjali had acted together previously. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta took to Twitter on July 13 after he contracted stomach infection and blamed the Mumbai government for providing unsafe drinking water to citizens.&nbsp;
He mentioned that his doctor has been dealing with similar cases over the last few days and the infection seems to be from a bug originating in our drinking water.&nbsp;
He tagged BMC, CM Ekanth Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis among others.&nbsp;
'I developed a terrible stomach infection this morning. It hit me before I&rsquo;d even eaten. Spoke to my family doctor and he said that he is seeing at least 10 patients with similar symptoms every day and some have been hospitalised. The infections seem to be from a bug originating in our drinking water,' he tweeted.
Hansal Mehta also criticised the governmentfor crippling traffic, lack of readiness for flooding and crumbling state of infrastruture.

Now, the director has penned a special note for his actor saying that he silenced all his &lsquo;Critic Roshans&rsquo; with his performance.

With the success of his recent recent, 'Scoop', director Hansal Mehta is back in the spotlight once again. The show streaming on Netflix in India is based on a memoir by Mumbai based journalist Jigna Vora who was arrested for the murder of another journalist J Dey in 2011. She was sent to prison but was later acquitted. On The India Story, Hansal Mehta tells Vikram Chandra about the stories and characters he selects to make movies and why he feels it is important to tell stories that are often left untold.&nbsp;

Bangladesh High Court banned 'Faraaz' from streaming online in the country, after hearing a petition file against the Hansal Mehta directorial.

Hansal Mehta&rsquo;s directorial &lsquo;Faraaz&rsquo; has been banned by the Bangladesh High Court for the promotion and online streaming of the film in the country. As per reports, as of now, there is no ban on the theatrical release of the film because their censor board has not yet taken any decision on its certification.
The film, which was released on February 3 this year, is based on the 2016 Dhaka attack wherein 22 people, mostly foreigners were killed and seven terrorists were sentenced to death. &nbsp;
According to the High Court order, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (BTRC) is directed to ban the streaming of &lsquo;Faraaz&rsquo; on online platforms in the country.
According to an AIR report, the bench of justice Md Khasruzzaman and justice Md Iqbal Kabir passed the order in Bangladesh High Court on Monday, in response to a writ petition filed by the mother of Abinta Kabir, Ruba Ahmed. Abinta was one of the many who were killed in the terror attack in 2016.
Just after the &lsquo;Faraaz&rsquo; trailer was released, Ruba reportedly went to court and requested them to stop the release of the film in Bangladesh. The AIR report added that Ruba claimed that the film depicts Abinta's character &lsquo;in a derogatory manner&rsquo;. The report further added that the law enforcement agencies of Bangladesh are also shown in a poor light and that can damage the reputation of the country.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta praised actor Shah Rukh Khan and his latest release &lsquo;Pathaan&rsquo; which has emerged as a blockbuster. In a new interview, he said that &lsquo;Pathaan&rsquo; has proved that 'a good film will reach the audience'. He added that a good film and a good man can't be stopped for 'too long'.
In an interview with news agency PTI, Hansal said that &lsquo;Pathaan&rsquo; is as political as perhaps his film &lsquo;Faraaz&rsquo;, but the expression is different.
&lsquo;The way it is done is different, the audience is different. All kinds of films need to be made. If my film has to be made then a Rohit Shetty film also should be made. A Pathaan has to flourish for my film to breathe. The industry is interdependent...A good film is a good film and it will reach the audience. And that is what Pathaan has proven,&rsquo; he said.
He added, &lsquo;You cannot keep a good film and a good man down for too long. There are some really good films that didn't find an audience. But then they found an audience on OTT or somewhere. Times are changing.&rsquo;
Talking about his projects, Hansal said, &lsquo;My intention is to gain a greater understanding of our world, of our times, to seek empathy for the people who suffer through this, through storytelling. The larger human empathy is for the people who go through this kind of ordeal. I will continue doing it. I approach my films with utmost sensitivity. I don't judge my characters, I don't pass judgments through the film, I explore them as human beings.&rsquo;
Hansal's latest film &lsquo;Faraaz&rsquo; is based on the July 2016 terror attack on a bakery in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The film, which stars Zahaan Kapoor and Aditya Rawal in the lead roles, released on February 3.

Director Hansal Mehta shared the trailer of the film on Twitter, and wrote, 'Standing tall against bigotry. Presenting the trailer of #Faraaz. Proudly releasing on February 3.'
The trailer opens with a glimpse of customers enjoying their meals at the Holey Artisan Cafe in Dhaka, Bangladesh on July 1, 2016. The caf&eacute; is taken over by terrorists and they start killing innocent people. Police is also be seen making plans against the terrorist attack.
Zahaan Kapoor, son of Kunal Kapoor and grandson of late actor Shashi Kapoor, also features in the trailer as one of the customers. He is seen saving children and fighting with the terrorists inside the cafe.&nbsp;
'Faraaz' is set to release in theatres on February 3. Director Hansal Mehta who was recently shooting for his upcoming movie with Kareena Kapoor Khan in London has slammed the new ad for Dream 11 featuring cricketer Rishabh Pant. He said that he's offended by the ad and demanded to pull the ad down.
Hansal took to Twitter and wrote, 'This is a disgusting and disrespectful commercial. Pimp yourself but not at the cost of ridiculing art and it&rsquo;s rich traditions. I demand that @Dream11 pulls this down.'
The ad showcases Rishabh wondering what he would have become if not a cricketer. It then features Rishabh as a classical singer singing very badly at an event while taking the wicketkeeper's stance in a hypothetical situation.
Many people responded to the tweet by Hansal, where many agreed that the ad should be pulled down while some gave the makers the liberty of freedom of speech and expression.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has been a part of the film industry for three decades. In a recent interview, he addressed the relentless hate Bollywood has been receiving on social media and the boycott calls faced by big-ticket films and A-list stars like Aamir Khan and Ranbir Kapoor.
In a conversation with indianexpress.com, Hansal Mehta said the anti-Bollywood sentiment is disturbing, but also a lot of it is also &lsquo;very manufactured&rsquo;.
He said, &lsquo;The kind of stuff that is written on social media, some of it even surreptitiously and otherwise, with the endorsement of some of our own colleagues. It is disturbing but I do also feel that a lot of it is also social media, very manufactured.&rsquo;
Citing examples of music mogul Gulshan Kumar&rsquo;s killing and film financer Bharat Shah&rsquo;s arrest in a case of alleged nexus with the underworld, Hansal Mehta said that the industry is not new to setbacks and it has always bounced back.
He said that fear is getting the better of filmmakers in being able to tell their stories the way they want to, in making the films the way they want to. Hansal feels &lsquo;it&rsquo;s a transitory phase&rsquo; and Bollywood will emerge out of it as it is a resilient industry.

He concluded by saying that a rooted film can both laud and be critical of a society and its culture, but at least they should be well made.

 He tweeted, ‘I really enjoyed #Brahmastra. What I enjoyed even more is going to a cinema hall for a nearly 60-70% full morning show after failing to get tickets for last night’s shows. And long queues for the later shows at the same multiplex. The 2nd part is going to be HUGE.’ 
Hansal Mehta’s appreciation of ‘Brahmastra’ didn’t go well with actor Kangana Ranaut's fans. And one tweeterati slammed him and accused him of giving a flop film to ‘Queen’ actor.
