Ikat weaving basically means to tie or bind and it is derived from the Indonesian word mengikat. Ikat was earlier used for religious activities and was mainly made in Odisha, Telangana and Gujarat. If scholars are to be believed, Ikat weaving in India dates to the 12th century CE but this print's history is not just restricted to India. This fine printing technique was found in places around Central, South and Southeast Asia, and South America.

Ikat involves a complex method of dyeing yarns before they are woven into fabric. Each thread must be carefully bound and dyed in specific patterns, which requires significant skill and precision. Patola Ikat: This is one of the most renowned forms of ikat from Gujarat. Prices can range from ₹20,000 to ₹1,00,000 (or more) per saree or fabric, depending on the design and quality.
Ikats from Andhra Pradesh: In Andhra Pradesh, especially in the regions of Pochampally and Gadwal, ikat fabrics are priced from ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 per saree or fabric piece.
Khandua Ikat: In Odisha, Khandua ikat is renowned for its unique patterns and colours. Prices can range from ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 per saree.
In international high-end boutiques and luxury fashion stores, ikat fabrics can command premium prices. For instance, a high-quality ikat silk saree or fabric might range from $300 to $10,000 or more, depending on its complexity and the reputation of the brand.Ikat has played a massive role in the handloom revival in India, and it was known to represent a person's cultural and textile taste.

During the post-Independence era, our late-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her best friend Pupul Jayakar, and others used to wear this print. And now, with its global reach and a Western touch, celebrities are seen flaunting the Ikat pattern with style and grace in various forms like kaftan, dresses, skirts, pantsuits, co ord sets etc.

Nirmal Salvi is one of the last surviving families, who have been weaving Patan Patola for the last 1000 years. In October 2023 Nirmal Salvi's exquisite collection, 'Suramya' Festive Couture 2023 showcased a collection which included Salvi&rsquo;s patola and other handlooms like bandhani, zardozi, and mirror embroidery. In 2022, K. Zinzuwadia Legacy presented Patola by Nirmal Salvi and showcased some of the mesmerizing designs in sync with BRDS Ahmedabad Times Fashion Week&rsquo;s heritage theme.&nbsp;

National Handloom Day 2021: Whether it is the colourful &ldquo;Bandhani&rdquo; textile from Gujarat or the intricate silk weave on &ldquo;Kanjeevaram&rdquo; sarees from Tamil Nadu, India is home to a variety of vibrant handloom weaves. The handloom sector is the second largest employer in rural India and acts as a testimony to India's rich and diverse culture.
But the skills of the handloom weavers and karigars will soon be lost and forgotten due to the prevalence and growth of power looms. In an attempt to create awareness, and to protect the handmade and the handwoven, the Union Government of India declared 7th August 2015 as the National Handloom Day.
But why the 7th of August? This day commemorates the Swadeshi Movement launched in Calcutta on August 7th in 1905 to boycott all foreign products and revive domestic produce.
Unfortunately, in the current day situation due to several factors, like poor infrastructure, inaccessibility to funds and prime locations with consumers, the handloom weavers are now slowly leaving the loom. This means that efforts need to be made on all levels of society to protect and promote handmade fabric and art.
The handloom sector is the most significant part of the cultural heritage of India and it cannot be lost in the pages of time. The need of the hour is to take steps to help revive and restore the handloom industry.

A research team at the Mechanical Engineering dept of IIT-BHU has developed a QR code that will be woven into handloom Banarasi sarees to confirm their authenticity.

Using modern technology to authenticate Banarasi sarees, the manufacturer will now weave a QR code into the saree&nbsp;to validate its credentials.&nbsp;

Using modern technology to authenticate Banarasi sarees, the manufacturer will now weave a QR code into the saree&nbsp;to validate its credentials.&nbsp;

A research team at the Mechanical Engineering department of the Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU) has developed a QR code that will be woven into handloom Banarasi sarees to confirm their authenticity. This will also give assurance to the customers about the quality of the&nbsp;saree and they will not get duped into paying a hefty amount for low quality copies.&nbsp;
The manufacturer can weave the QR code into the&nbsp;saree, containing relevant fabric and manufacturing details. The new technique of weaved QR code will include the Handloom&nbsp;Mark Logo, Silk Mark and the&nbsp;Banaras Geographical Indications (GI) logo, along with other relevant information.&nbsp;
It should be noted that the QR code will be incorporated into the extra fabric of the blouse. This will not affect the fabric strength, style and the look of the saree will remain intact. The code will also help local and foreign customers to differentiate between handloom products and power loom products, as per the researchers.
