Patan Patola: From PM Modi to the Ambanis, know why it's everyone's favourite and its history

With Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s extravagant wedding ceremony, the world got to witness various Gujarati traditions like Lagan lakhvanu and Mameru ceremony. Besides the rituals, we also were introduced to some of the most exquisite textiles of Gujarat and one of them was 'Patan Patola'.

What is Patan Patola?

Patan Patola is a type of traditional silk saree woven in Patan, Gujarat. These sarees are known for their intricate double ikat weaving technique, where both the warp and weft threads are tie-dyed before weaving. This meticulous process results in a saree with patterns that appear identical on both sides.

Patan Patola sarees are crafted using traditional methods that have been passed down through generations of weavers in Patan, Gujarat. These sarees are known for their vibrant colours and elaborate patterns, often featuring motifs inspired by nature, geometric designs, or cultural symbols. They are typically woven using high-quality silk yarns, which contribute to their luxurious texture and drape.

From mills to the fashion world

Patan Patola sarees are highly valued for their craftsmanship and are often worn on special occasions, weddings, and festivals in Gujarat and across India. Nirmal Salvi is one of the last surviving families, who have been weaving Patan Patola for the last 1000 years. In October 2023 Nirmal Salvi's exquisite collection, 'Suramya' Festive Couture 2023 showcased a collection which included Salvi’s patola and other handlooms like bandhani, zardozi, and mirror embroidery. In 2022, K. Zinzuwadia Legacy presented Patola by Nirmal Salvi and showcased some of the mesmerizing designs in sync with BRDS Ahmedabad Times Fashion Week’s heritage theme.

Patan Patola: One of PM Modi’s favourite

In 2022, PM Narendra Modi had gifted a Patan Patola scarf to Italian PM Giorgia Meloni. PM Modi himself has been seen in Patola many times. Last year during the Lord Jagannath rath yatra organised at their residence, Kokilaben Ambani was seen in a beautiful saree.

In modern times the design is used in various forms like jewellery boxes, Patola Potli Bags, dupattas, jackets, kurtas and other home decors.
Due to the intricate weaving process and skilled craftsmanship involved, Patan Patola sarees are considered to be a symbol of cultural heritage and are cherished as heirloom pieces by many families.
