Kanjivaram silk originated over 400 years ago from the historic town of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu and is renowned for its rich texture, vibrant colors, and intricate patterns. Each saree is a masterpiece, woven using pure mulberry silk threads, and embellished with gold or silver zari work.
Here's a fun fact - Did you know that the process of creating a single Kanjivaram saree can take anywhere from 10 days to several weeks? It all depends on the complexity of the design. This level of craftsmanship is what makes Kanjivaram silk so special and highly valued in the market.
So what determines the market value and price of a Kanjeevaram silk saree? It's influenced by factors like the quality of silk, intricacy of design and the amount of zari used. Prices can range from thousands to even several lakhs. These sarees are a staple in Indian weddings and festive occasions, ensuring consistent demand both in India and abroad.
Here's an interesting trend &ndash; the global demand for Kanjivaram silk has been on the rise, particularly among the Indian diaspora and luxury fashion markets. High-end designers are now incorporating Kanjivaram silk into contemporary fashion, giving this traditional fabric a modern twist.
The sericulture industry in India is a massive employer. Sericulture is the process of raising silkworms to produce silk. As per a Brand Equity Foundation report, this industry has an estimated 9.2 million people working in rural and semi-urban areas. In Kanchipuram alone, there are nearly 60,000 silk looms in operation, generating an annual turnover exceeding Rs 200 crore.
The report also highlights that in FY23, India produced a whopping 36,582 metric tonnes of silk, up from 34,903 metric tonnes the previous year. That&rsquo;s a 3.4% increase. India's silk production isn't limited to just one region. States like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and more contribute significantly to the industry. Indian silks are in high demand across the globe, with exports reaching more than 30 countries.
Over the years, the government has launched significant initiatives such as the Tribal Sub-Plan, Silk Samagra, and the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan to support the development and growth of India's silk industry.
However, it's not all smooth sailing. The Kanjivaram silk market faces challenges like rising raw material costs, competition from cheaper, machine-made alternatives, and a dwindling number of skilled weavers.
But despite these hurdles, Kanjivaram silk continues to hold its prestigious position in the textile industry due to its timeless appeal and cultural significance Kanjivaram silk is more than just a fabric&mdash;it's a symbol of tradition, craftsmanship, and luxury.

Indian handloom is a cherished heritage that weaves together India's cultural diversity and artistic brilliance. With a history dating back to centuries, handloom textiles have been meticulously crafted by skilled artisans using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

In 2015, the Government of India designated 7th of August as the National Handloom Day and decided to be celebrated annually. The first one was inaugurated on 7 August 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai.
<h3>Handloom sector in India</h3>
The handloom sector of India is one of the biggest unorganized economic activities. India's handloom artists are globally known for their hard-spinning, weaving and printing styles. It is mainly based out of small towns and villages of country which transfer skills from one generation to other.
According to the Handloom census 2019-20, the industry employs about 3,522,512 handloom workers across the country. The industry primarily employs women workers with a share of 72.29 per cent of the total handloom workers.
The majorly exported handloom products from India are mats and mattings, carpets, rugs, bedsheets, cushion covers, and other handloom articles.

National Handloom Day 2021: Whether it is the colourful &ldquo;Bandhani&rdquo; textile from Gujarat or the intricate silk weave on &ldquo;Kanjeevaram&rdquo; sarees from Tamil Nadu, India is home to a variety of vibrant handloom weaves. The handloom sector is the second largest employer in rural India and acts as a testimony to India's rich and diverse culture.
But the skills of the handloom weavers and karigars will soon be lost and forgotten due to the prevalence and growth of power looms. In an attempt to create awareness, and to protect the handmade and the handwoven, the Union Government of India declared 7th August 2015 as the National Handloom Day.
But why the 7th of August? This day commemorates the Swadeshi Movement launched in Calcutta on August 7th in 1905 to boycott all foreign products and revive domestic produce.
Unfortunately, in the current day situation due to several factors, like poor infrastructure, inaccessibility to funds and prime locations with consumers, the handloom weavers are now slowly leaving the loom. This means that efforts need to be made on all levels of society to protect and promote handmade fabric and art.
The handloom sector is the most significant part of the cultural heritage of India and it cannot be lost in the pages of time. The need of the hour is to take steps to help revive and restore the handloom industry.

Giving a boost to local weavers and artisans in Nagaland, the National Handloom&nbsp;Expo started on the 5th of March at&nbsp;Urban Haat in Dimapur.
Organised by the&nbsp;Directorate of Handloom and Textiles, Government of Assam, the expo will go on for 15 days.
Over 30 stalls from Assam, Nagaland&nbsp;and Manipur&nbsp;have put up their work at the expo.
The theme for the handloom this year is 'Pavillion'.&nbsp;
