DPAP president Ghulam Nabi Azad slammed Omar Abdullah during his address and said that he spends his summers in London and is a 'tourist'.

Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) president Ghulam Nabi Azad on April 15 alleged that former chief minister Omar Abdullah comes to the valley only as a 'tourist,' while he spends summers in London and winters in warmer climates abroad.
Azad made the sally as he hit the campaign trail in Doda as a star campaigner, canvassing for party candidate and former minister G M Saroori.
The campaigning in Udhampur-Kathua Lok Sabha constituency has become intense with the exchange of personal attacks by rival politicians.
Congress's Lal Singh is pitted against Union minister and BJP candidate Jitendra Singh in the Udhampur-Kathua parliamentary constituency, which goes to polls in the first phase of the Lok Sabha election on April 19.
DPAP&rsquo;s G M Saroori is among 10 others in the fray.
"Omar sahib &hellip; You visit your maternal grandfather's house during summers in London and some hot country during winters and you come here as a tourist," Azad took dig at the National Conference vice president in his speech.
Omar Abdullah is also on a campaign trail in Doda district canvassing for Choudhary Lal Singh of Congress, in capacity as a partner in the INDIA bloc.
Lal Singh is contesting for the fourth time from Udhampur Lok Sabha seat.
Azad alleged that Omar used to visit Chenab Valley for five minutes and hasn't come to the area even once in the last several years.
"Have you seen his face in Doda, Bhaderwah or Kishtwar during his tenure as CM? Has he been here for the last 10 years?" Azad said, addressing the public.
He also questioned the whereabouts of "political tourists" during the region's years of hardship and criticised the parties for their silence on issues like land eviction order and abolition of Article 370.
He accused the NC of tacitly supporting the BJP's agenda for its own interests, over the welfare of the people.
"Where were these political tourists in Chenab Valley during these ten years of people's suffering? Did they raise their voices against land eviction or Article 370 in Parliament? "They seem to be aiding the BJP in every action. Their leaders are too busy appeasing the BJP, just check their statements. They are the ones who declared their doors open for NDA, not me. So who's the BJP's A team? It's NC," Azad said.
The former Congress leader said that despite such restrictions as the Public Safety Act, Omar Abdullah and "his cohorts" have continued to live luxuriously.
Azad, who is also a former J-K chief minister, said that unlike some, he does not indulge in leisurely vacations and is committed to the alleviation of the suffering of the people.
Azad questioned the Congress party's stance on Article 370, and said he always advocated for Article 370 and 35A, as well as the restoration of statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.
He said that instead of confronting the BJP, the Congress seems to focus on targeting his party.
"Congress is silent on Article 370, they didn't even speak when I was in Congress. Only I know how I managed to speak on Article 370 in parliament," he said.&nbsp;

Seventeen former leaders of the Democratic Azad Party (DAP), including ex-deputy chief minister Tara Chand and ex-PCC chief Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, on Friday returned to the Congress fold and were welcomed back by the party which said they were on a "leave of two months".
AICC general secretary K C Venugopal welcomed the leaders, saying it was a happy day for the party as they were returning back to their home ahead of the Bharat Jodo Yatra which will enter Jammu and Kashmir after two weeks.
"The Bharat Jodo Yatra has become a big movement in the country and that is why all these leaders have decided to come back to the Congress fold," he told reporters.
"This is only a beginning and when the Yatra is entering Jammu and Kashmir, all people with Congress ideology and who want a united India will join the party. I think, they had gone on a leave for two months," he said.
Asked whether there are any talks with DAP chief Ghulam Nabi Azad to return to the Congress fold, Venugopal said he has himself denied any such talks.
Asked about the reasons to quit the Congress, Tara Chand said, "We got carried away by emotions and friendship and quit the party in haste".
On why they rejoined, he said, "We were not comfortable" in DAP as we have spent 50 years of our life in the Congress and realised our mistake".

The former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir said that the other contender, Aam Aadmi Party is not capable of challenging the BJP as it is "merely a party of Delhi". He said that AAP had failed in Punjab, and people won't vote for it again.

Azad had resigned from the Congress in August 2022 with a scathing letter accusing the party leadership. Earlier, Azad, in his first public meeting in Jammu after quitting Congress, had announced the launch of his own political outfit that will focus on the restoration of full statehood. 
He had said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir would decide the party's name and flag. "I've not decided upon a name for my party yet. The people of J-K will decide the party's name and flag. I'll give a Hindustani name to my party that everyone can understand," he said at the rally after breaking away from his five-decade-long association with the grand old party.
 "My party will focus on the restoration of full statehood, right to land, and employment to native domicile," he added then. Azad said that the first unit of his political outfit would be formed in Jammu and Kashmir in view of impending assembly polls.

Responding to the reports of a threat to his life issued by The Resistance Front (TRF) -- an offshoot of proscribed terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) -- Azad said he is not scared of anyone.
"I am Ghulam-e-Nabi (the slave of the Prophet) and not anyone else's slave. Saroori asserted that the restoration of the pre-August 5, 2019 position of Jammu and Kashmir will be part of the party's manifesto.
A former minister who was among several prominent Congress leaders of Jammu and Kashmir who resigned from the basic membership of the party in support of Azad, Saroori said their leader was ideologically secular and there was no question of him working at the behest of the BJP.
He also claimed that hundreds of senior Congress leaders, Panchayati Raj Institution members and prominent workers have tendered their resignations after the former chief minister ended his over five-decade-long association with the national party.
"Azad is coming to Jammu on September 4 to hold consultations with his well-wishers before the launch of our new party," Saroori, a former vice-president of the J-K unit of the Congress, told PTI.
Hours after his resignation on Friday, Azad said he would launch a new party soon and that its first unit would be set up in Jammu and Kashmir.
"I am in no hurry as of now to launch a national party but keeping in mind that elections are likely to be held in Jammu and Kashmir, I have decided to launch a unit there soon," Azad, who hails from the Bhaderwah township of Doda district, had told PTI on Friday night.
Saroori, who along with several former legislators met with Azad in New Delhi on Friday to extend their support, said the veteran politician was going to announce the launch of the party within the next fortnight.
"We are happy that he is returning to J-K where he served as chief minister (from November 2, 2005 to July 11, 2008). Saroori said the new party would focus on development, unity among all sections of the society, and would struggle for restoration of the pre-August 5, 2019 position.
On August 5, 2019, the Centre revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution and bifurcated the erstwhile state into two Union territories.
Saroori said the Congress is almost finished in Jammu and Kashmir with the departure of Azad.
"There is a beeline of leaders (from J-K) coming to meet with Azad to extend their support. We have received hundreds of resignation letters from PRI members, including district and block development council members, and several municipal corporators," he said.
Over a dozen leaders, including several former ministers and legislators, resigned from the basic membership of the Congress in support of Azad and many more such as former deputy chief minister Tara Chand are likely to resign after meeting with Azad in New Delhi on Saturday.
Referring to the statement of the Congress accusing Azad of "collaboration" with the BJP after his resignation, Saroori said those criticising him were shutting their eyes to the ground realities or were finding the earth beneath their feet slipping away.
"He is a secular leader who worked to strengthen the Congress over the past five decades. In fact, all of us have given our blood and sweat, but how can you stay back in a party which is insulting and humiliating you," he asked, blaming the Congress leadership for compelling them to take such a decision.

As part of a comprehensive revamp of the organisation in Jammu and Kashmir, Gandhi also appointed Vikar Rasool Wani, considered close to Azad, as the new JK unit chief.
Azad is a prominent member of the G23 grouping within the Congress which has been critical of the leadership and has been seeking an organisational overhaul.
Azad, retired from the Rajya Sabha and was the outgoing leader of opposition, was not renominated to the upper house.
In the revamped unit, Raman Bhalla was named as the working president of J&amp;K Congress and Azad as champaign committee chief, with former PDP leader Tariq Hamid Karra as vice chief of the campaign panel.
Hours after the appointments were made public, sources said Azad declined to accept the offer.
The Centre is wanting to hold assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir soon and the process of finalisation of electoral rolls is underway after the completion of the delimitation exercise.
Wani replaces Ghulam Ahmad Mir who had tendered his resignation in July after holding the post for eight years.
The Congress president has accepted the resignation of Mir from the post of president, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, a party statement said.
The Congress president appointed president and working president of the J&amp;K unit and also constituted the campaign committee, political affairs committee, coordination committee, manifesto committee, publicity and publication committee, disciplinary committee and pradesh election committee of the UT unit with immediate effect, the statement said.
Wani (46), a resident of Banihal township of Jammu region's Ramban district, is a two-time former legislator who also served as a minister during the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference-Congress coalition government between 2009-14.
Tariq Hamid Karra will be the vice chairman of the campaign committee headed by Azad, while G M Saroori will be its convenor, according to the statement.
The campaign committee has named 11 leaders with PCC president and working president its permanent invitees.

Mir, Tara Chand, Thakur Balwan Singh, T S Bajwa, Shabir Khan, Neeraj Kundan, Abdul Majeed Wani and Fairoz Khan are also part of the campaign committee.
Gandhi also set up a political affairs committee with Karra as its chairman and it included the likes of Azad, Mir and Saifuddin Soz.
The political affairs committee also includes Peerzada M Syed, Taj Mohiuddin, Tara Chand, Mula Ram and Khemlata Wakhlu.
The committee comprises nine leaders with AICC in-charge, PCC president and working president being permanent invitees in the panel.
The party also formed an 11-member coordination committee headed by Mir, 12-member manifesto committee under the chairmanship of Soz and nine-member publicity and publication panel led by Mula Ram.
A seven-member disciplinary committee has been formed with Taj Mohiyuddin as the chairman.
A Pradesh Election Committee headed by PCC chief has also been set up.
The Election Commission had recently revised to November 25 the date of final publication of voters list of Jammu and Kashmir &ndash; the union territory's first voters' list after the boundaries of assembly seats were redrawn in the delimitation exercise.
After the rolls are published, the EC can technically hold assembly polls in the UT. A timeline for the election is yet to be officially declared.
