Superintendent of Police (SP) Yogesh Goyal said a group of five to seven people allegedly attacked the vegetable vendor, Satveer (50), with a sharp weapon, leaving him with severe injuries on his face. Satveer was taken to the MB Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
The tensions escalated further when two roadside huts and vegetable carts were set on fire. Firefighters reached the scene and doused the flames.
Police teams from four nearby stations, led by the SP himself, arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control. Extra forces have been deployed in sensitive areas to maintain peace.
Markets in the area remained shut on Friday.
"Six people have been detained after scanning CCTV footage that captured the assailants carrying weapons. We are investigating all aspects of the incident and strict action will be taken," the SP said.
Local traders observed a complete market bandh on Friday, shutting down shops at Dhanmandi and Teej Ka Chowk. They demanded immediate arrests and action against allegedly negligent police officials.
Later in the day, a meeting between the traders and the administration helped pacify the situation.
Municipal Commissioner Ramprakash and Additional District Magistrate (ADM), City, Vaar Singh assured the protesters of action on three of their key demands -- arresting the accused, removing illegal vendors from the area and taking disciplinary action against errant officers.
Following this, the traders agreed to reopen their shops.

That's what I feel." The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday attacked the Delhi BJP government, alleging the dismissal of thousands of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and multi-tasking workers (MTWs) from the Mohalla clinics.
Responding to the allegations, Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh said the government will not do injustice to anyone and everyone eligible will be included.

"All good doctors and healthcare workers will be with us. Everything will be done systematically," the minister told PTI.
Earlier, addressing a press conference, Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that the minutes of a meeting issued on May 7 indicated plans to shut down most Mohalla clinics in Delhi. The stated reason, he said, was that Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs would be established in their place and wherever an Aarogya Mandir is built, there would be no need for a nearby Mohalla Clinic.
According to him, the statement read that the clinics would remain operational only until the Aarogya Mandirs are constructed, after which both the clinics and their personnel would be removed.
"They've been trying to get a meeting with the chief minister since then. But when they got no response, they were left with no choice but to come in thousands to the CM's Janta Darbar," he said.
Bharadwaj accused the BJP of going back on its promise.
"Before elections, the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi), (Union Health Minister) J P Nadda and every BJP MP and minister promised that no public welfare scheme run during the AAP government tenure -- be it free electricity, 20,000 litres of water or Mohalla clinics -- would be stopped. But the first order by the new health minister was to shut down 250 rented clinics," he said.
"With the sentiment of political hatred, all the facilities are being shut down. And on top of that, the people who used to come to the clinics every day, used to get free treatment, free medicines and free tests, those facilities are also being shut down by the BJP," he added.
Bharadwaj noted that many of the staffers have been working since 2017.
"For more than eight years, they've worked, earning between Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 a month. Their income depends on patient turnout. Their entire family is dependent on them," he said.
"Just like the BJP removed over 10,000 bus marshals, data entry operators in hospitals, yoga instructors, Delhi Assembly Research Centre (DARC) fellows and guest teachers, now they're targeting the Mohalla Clinic staff. This is shameful," he added.
"In Arvind Kejriwal's government, the poor got jobs. Today, under the BJP, they are being removed without any thought about how they will run their homes and feed their families," he added.

India on Friday pressed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to reconsider its USD one billion assistance to Pakistan, saying Islamabad could use a large part of it to fund the terrorist infrastructure.
In an address to air warriors at Gujarat's Bhuj Air Force station, Singh confirmed use of the 'BrahMos' supersonic missiles in the Operation Sindoor and said the weapon showed Pakistan the "light of day in the darkness of night".
Sending a clear and firm message to Islamabad, the defence minister made it clear that the operation is not yet over as the current ceasefire means that India has kept Pakistan on "probation" on the basis of its behaviour.
"If the behaviour improves, it is fine; but if there is any disturbance, harshest punishment will be given," he said.
"Our actions were just a trailer, we will show the full picture, if need be. Attacking and eliminating terrorism is the new normal of new India," he said.
Under Operation Sindoor, India on early May 7 destroyed nine terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack.
All subsequent retaliations by Pakistan were carried out under the operation. The two sides reached an understanding on cessation of hostilities on May 10 after four days of confrontations.
In his remarks, Singh said Pakistan has again started trying to rebuild the terror infrastructure destroyed by India last week and that Islamabad will "spend the collected from the common citizens of Pakistan to pay around Rs 14 crore to Masood Azhar, the head of the terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad" and a UN designated terrorist.
The Bhuj air force base was one of the military installations that Pakistan targeted during the four-day confrontation between the two militaries.
Singh cautioned against providing financial support to Pakistan saying any such assistance would be no less than terror funding.
In its board meeting in Washington on May 9, the IMF cleared a USD one billion tranche for Pakistan as part of its USD 7-billion funding programme for the country.
"The Pakistan government has announced financial assistance to rebuild the terror infrastructure of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed located in Muridke and Bahawalpur," Singh said.
"Certainly, a large part of IMF's USD one billion assistance will be used to fund the terror infrastructure. Will this not be considered indirect funding by IMF, an international organisation?" "Any financial assistance to Pakistan is no less than terror funding. The funds India gives to IMF should not be used, directly or indirectly, to create terror infrastructure in Pakistan or any other country," he said.
The defence minister said India would like the IMF to reconsider USD one billion support to Pakistan and refrain from giving any kind of assistance in future.
He commended the "effective" role played by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Operation Sindoor which he said is being appreciated by the world.
Lauding the air warriors for eliminating the terror camps in Pakistan and PoK in just 23 minutes, he said "when missiles were dropped inside the enemy territory, the world heard the echoes of India's valour and might." He added that IAF spearheaded this campaign against terrorism, and during the operation, it not only dominated the enemy, but decimated them.
Singh highlighted that India's fighter jets are capable of striking every corner of Pakistan without crossing the border. "The world has witnessed how IAF destroyed terror camps and later Pakistan's airbases. The IAF gave the proof that India's war policy and technology have changed." The case that led to their arrest was registered on May 10, when Ranjit Kumar, a resident of Lal Bagh in Azadpur, reported that he had been assaulted and robbed in a similar manner around 4:45 am while travelling from Old Delhi Railway Station to Azadpur.
According to the FIR, the men sitting in the back of the auto attacked him, choked him unconscious and fled with his mobile phone, wallet, documents, and travel bag after throwing him out of the moving vehicle.
Based on Kumar's complaint, an e-FIR was registered and an investigation was launched.
"The breakthrough came after examining footage from over 100 CCTV cameras along the suspected route. Police identified the culprits as Raja, a repeat offender from Welcome Colony and Sonu, a known criminal from Loni in Ghaziabad. Both had multiple prior cases against them, including robbery and snatching," said the DCP.
On May 14, Raja and Sonu were apprehended from Loni after raids.
Raja, who committed the crimes in an auto given to him by his sister, had another accomplice named Deepak, alias Totla, and targeted railway passengers regularly.
The police also recovered the auto used in the crime and a mobile phone linked to another robbery near Geeta Colony Flyover. That incident was reported at the Kotwali Police Station on May 15, linking the suspects to yet another robbery.
"The accused have a long criminal history. Raja has 14 previous cases and Sonu has 11, registered across multiple police stations in Delhi. Teams are hunting for the third accused, Deepak," the DCP said, adding that further investigation is underway.

&ldquo;If prosecution witness (PW) 9, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Jahangir and PW 10, ASI Vanvir, had actually seen and identified the accused persons among the rioters on February 24, 2020, then there was no good reason for them to keep silent for such a long period,&rdquo; the court said.
The investigating officer was said to have known that the two police officials were on duty at the spot, but he did not examine them.
&ldquo;Showing photographs of the accused to PW 9, when they were already arrested in this case, appears to be an unnatural action, giving the impression that PW9 was artificially made an eyewitness to identify the accused persons," the order said.
The court, as a result, discarded the witness testimony.
The statement of another witness, namely, Aslam, who identified the accused in court for the first time though he had in fact known them from before was termed "suspicious" by the court.
The order held that the charges against the accused persons were not proved beyond a reasonable doubt and acquitted Ankit Chaudhary, Sumit, Pappu, Vijay, Ashish Kumar, Sourabh Kaushik, Bhupender, Shakti Singh, Sachin Kumar, Rahul and Yogesh.

West Bengal Police on Friday said 19 of its personnel were injured, one of them seriously, during clashes with agitating school teachers outside the state education department headquarters in Salt Lake here, and a suo motu case had been lodged against persons identified as instigators of the unrest.
Talking to reporters, ADG (Law and Order) Jawed Shamim and IG South Bengal Supratim Sarkar said police had exercised maximum restraint for over seven hours on Thursday evening before taking action to assist government employees "trapped inside" Bikash Bhavan, the state education department headquarters.
"Nineteen policemen were injured, and one is serious. We have videos and evidence against those who instigated the agitation yesterday. We will take legal action against them," Sarkar said at Bhawani Bhavan, the West Bengal Police Headquarters.
He clarified that police intervention was solely to ensure the safe exit for government employees from the building, not to suppress the protest.
"The whole police action was only done to ensure that the government employees trapped inside Bikash Bhavan could come out and return home after an entire day&rsquo;s work. We have no intention to stop, alter, or disrupt the protest," Sarkar added.
ADG Shamim said, "Despite all the provocations &mdash; damaging government property, occupying premises &mdash; police exercised maximum restraint, respecting the emotions of the agitators," he said.
"We spoke to the agitators&rsquo; leadership and repeatedly requested them to allow the trapped employees to leave. There was even a pregnant woman inside. The employees were calling police in distress." As police attempted to assist those stuck inside, they were reportedly pelted with stones and plastic bottles, leading to a standoff.
"In that standoff, minimum force was used, and we ensured that those trapped inside were safely evacuated," he said, adding that there were 58 other departments, other than the education department, housed inside Bikash Bhavan.

The teachers, who lost their jobs following a court order last month that canceled thousands of appointments in government-aided schools due to irregularities in the recruitment process, had been staging a sit-in demonstration demanding reinstatement.
Last month, the Supreme Court invalidated the appointment of 25,753 teachers and other staff in state-aided schools and termed the entire selection process "vitiated and tainted".

Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla on Friday said Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann should take full responsibility for the spurious liquor tragedy that led to 27 deaths in Amritsar district and hold top officials accountable.
The Amritsar tragedy was not an isolated incident. There have been similar incidents during the past few years but the government has not learnt any lesson, he claimed.
Twenty-seven people, mostly daily-wage labourers, died after consuming spurious liquor in Amritsar district.
Aujla, the MP from Amritsar, expressed grief over the deaths and said, "The Punjab government's ongoing Yudh Nashian Virudh (campaign against drugs) has no connect whatsoever with the ground reality. Otherwise, this tragedy would not have happened." He pointed out that 120 deaths were reported due to spurious liquor consumption in Amritsar, Batala and Tarn Taran in 2020. In March 2024, 20 people died due to consumption of spurious liquor in Sangrur.
"No one knows what was done to the culprits and that is why people have no fear of the law. Now it has happened again in my (Amritsar parliamentary) constituency," Aujla said.
He added the recent deaths exposed the Mann's government's claims about the Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign.
"The chief minister should take full responsibility for the tragic deaths. He should hold top officials responsible and get resignations of all those government functionaries who are at the helm&hellip; Suspending DSP- and SHO-rank officials is not enough," Aujla said.
He also claimed the state government was focusing solely on revenue collection.
Highlighting that most victims of the recent and past hooch tragedies came from the poor strata of society who put their lives at risk to buy liquor from unauthorised sources, Aujla suggested the government should keep this in mind and provide country liquor at cheap rates in villages.
"Good quality liquor is not being sold at the actual price but at a higher rate, due to which the poor class is being forced to buy cheap and spurious liquor," he said and claimed there was a difference between the minimum sale price and the actual sale price of different country liquor brands.
Aujla said he had been raising alarm by writing to the director general of police and government officials, highlighting the worsening drug crisis, particularly in Amritsar and the border areas.
"I have consistently exposed the deep-rooted drug nexus and repeatedly brought the issue to the attention of the government and now the spurious liquor issue but all my missives were ignored," he claimed.
He also alleged there was a dangerous collusion between drug cartels, certain senior police personnel, and some state government officials.
"I strongly demand that the state government form a high-level committee under the supervision of a sitting high court judge to investigate the number of drug- and liquor-related deaths and go into related issues," he said.
Aujla said the situation in Amritsar was very serious and demanded that the central government send a high-level delegation under a Supreme Court judge to investigate the manufacture and supply of drugs and poisonous liquor in Amritsar and other parts of the state and pinpoint the people behind these activities.
The AAP government has drawn flak for the Amritsar tragedy, with the opposition demanding Mann's resignation.
The state government has said most of the culprits were arrested and vowed to ensure the strictest punishment for them.
A police probe has revealed that methanol-- a chemical used in industrial products -- was procured in bulk online to prepare the toxic brew.
Methanol is a light, colourless organic chemical compound that is poisonous when ingested and is illegally added to alcoholic beverages as a cheaper alternative to ethanol, which is the normal consumable alcohol.
Mann said his government would not spare anyone, however affluent they might be, involved in the sale of spurious liquor.
Aujla said, "We all know that illegal liquor manufacturers are ordering a large quantity of methanol and the state government hasn't done anything in this regard." He said every village in Punjab was affected and there had been a number of deaths due to drugs in recent years.
"When a big incident happens, action is taken against just a few and some are suspended but, after a few days, everything is forgotten," Aujla said and added it was time the government took the issue seriously.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said her government will bring a modernisation plan for the wholesale markets in the national capital.
A compactor and a green-waste processing plant will also be installed within the mandi premises, eliminating the need to transport waste elsewhere, according to an official statement.
Gupta visited the Azadpur Mandi, Asia's largest wholesale market, here on Friday morning and blamed the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi for its "poor condition".
She interacted with traders, workers and visitors at the mandi and took note of their concerns, the statement said.
"Thousands of people work in the Azadpur Mandi, but it severely lacks basic infrastructure like roads, sanitation and security. The heavy movement of trucks, rotting vegetables, broken roads and dilapidated toilets have turned this mandi into a garbage heap," the chief minister said.
Attacking the previous AAP dispensation, she accused its ministers of turning mandis into "centres of corruption".
"Neither the traders nor the workers were heard, and no effort was made to understand or address the core issues. Those who once promised to turn Delhi into London or Paris should stand here and face the stench. These markets need a complete renovation and we are committed to it," the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said.
She instructed officials to take immediate corrective steps to restore the dignity of both the traders and the public and ensure their safety.
"We will draw up a modernisation plan to develop mandis with better infrastructure, advanced facilities, a secure environment and a corruption-free system. We will begin from the Azadpur Mandi," the chief minister said.
She directed officials to install CCTV cameras across the mandi, starting from all the entry points, to ensure robust security, monitor vehicle movement and prevent discrepancies in registrations and gate entries. She also instructed for the deployment of extra sanitation staff within a week to improve cleanliness.
For infrastructure improvements, the chief minister ordered for immediate renovation of the roads, sheds and toilets within the mandi. A dedicated committee will be assigned to oversee the renovation work and ensure that all facilities are made fully functional.
To ensure basic amenities, the government will install drinking-water stations across the mandi.
A health facility will be set up within the existing Kisan Bhawan building to provide first-aid and emergency medical services. Additionally, an Atal Canteen will be launched to offer affordable meals to workers, serving a full meal for just Rs 5.
The chief minister said the mandi's management will be restructured, including the appointment of a new team and putting in place strict anti-corruption measures.
She ordered a full audit of the mandi's budgets for the last 10 years to examine expenditures and ensure transparency.
"This mandi is the lifeline of Delhi -- it caters to the needs of the entire city and nearby states. It is our responsibility to ensure that these markets are clean, well-managed and free from corruption," she said.
The chief minister assured the traders and workers that her government will continue working to resolve their issues, and that all announced initiatives will be implemented through regular, time-bound action.
Gupta was accompanied by minister Kapil Mishra during the visit.

The Nagpur police has booked arrested student activist-cum-journalist Rejaz M Sheeba Sydeek under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the probe has been transferred to the city unit of the Anti Terrorism Squad, a senior official said on Friday.
Sydeek (26) was arrested by Lakadganj police on May 7 from a hotel here after his online activities were placed under surveillance, the official said.
His online activities include provocative posts and an image showing him holding a firearm, following which he was booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 149 (preparing to wage war against the Government of India), 192 (provocation with intent to cause riots), 351 (criminal intimidation) and 353 (statements conducive to public mischief).
"His house in Kerala was raided on May 11, which led to recovery of incriminating documents. We have now added sections 38 and 39 of UAPA dealing with membership of terrorist organisation and providing support to such outfits. The case, which was initially lodged at Lakadganj police station, has now been transferred to Nagpur ATS," the official said.
While Sydeek claims to be an independent journalist and head of Kerala chapter of Democratic Students Union, the official alleged he was an "active urban operative of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist)".
Sydeek was allegedly involved in mobilising funds, attempting to launch a journal titled Nazariya, and working to form covert student groups to further Maoist ideology, the official claimed.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday directed officials to make arrangements for a record-breaking International Yoga Day on June 21 in Visakhapatnam, which will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Naidu noted that the 11th International Yoga Day "must be historic and unforgettable". The TDP-led government aims to surpass the record of 1.53 lakh participants set by Surat in 2023.
"This is a prestigious event. The Prime Minister&rsquo;s presence makes it even more special. It must be conducted spectacularly and mark the beginning of a widespread yoga movement across the state," Naidu said, in an official press release.
The programme must reach at least two crore people, and a state-wide campaign should be launched under the theme &lsquo;Yogandhra-2025,&rsquo; with every citizen made a stakeholder, Naidu added.
In the run-up to the event, a &lsquo;Yoga Month&rsquo; will be observed from May 21 to June 21, with yoga practice taking place across all village and ward secretariat jurisdictions.
Individuals, trainers, yoga associations, and experts will be involved as partners, while ordinary people will be offered both online and offline training for a month, the press release said, adding, those who complete the training will be awarded certificates of recognition.
"Everyone must consider yoga a fundamental responsibility. Even after Yoga Day, regular practice must continue across the state. For a month, there must be widespread dialogue on yoga everywhere," said Naidu.
To enhance visibility and outreach, organisations like the Isha Foundation and Art of Living should be engaged, he added.
Officials informed Naidu that crowd arrangements are being made at RK Beach in the port area, with yoga practitioners expected to be spread from this beach to Bheemunipatnam Beach on Yoga Day.
Arrangements are being made for approximately 2.5 lakh people to participate in yoga along this stretch, with 68 identified locations including public spaces like RK Beach, Rushikonda, schools, cricket grounds, police and sports complexes, navy premises, and other open grounds, according to the press release.
Naidu advised officials to aim for the participation of five lakh people by organising yoga sessions across suitable locations from RK Beach in Visakhapatnam to Srikakulam along the coastline.
On that day, yoga practice will be conducted between 7 am and 8 am.
The event will be coordinated with the Health Department, AYUSH Ministry, and central government agencies, the press release added.

A case under various provisions of the Representation of People (RP) Act and the IPC was on Friday registered against CPI(M) veteran G Sudhakaran in connection with his recent remarks claiming that postal ballots were opened during the 1989 Alappuzha Lok Sabha election.
Sudhakaran, in a purported video aired on TV channels, can be heard making the controversial remarks during a gathering of former NGO Union leaders here on Wednesday.
It prompted the Election Commission to launch a probe into the matter and the CPI(M) veteran's statement was recorded on Thursday by EC officials.
Following that, Sudhakaran, at another event here on Thursday, claimed that what he had said earlier was not completely true and he had added something extra to it from his "imagination".
"Nothing like that ever happened. No ballot boxes were opened and no ballots were ever tampered with. I have never taken part in anything of that sort and I have never done any bogus voting.
"I have also not paid anyone to do bogus voting. What I said on that day was only meant as a small warning to those doing such activities and to let them know that we are aware of what they are doing," he had said.
Despite the claim, the police on Friday filed an FIR against him under sections 128 (maintenance of secrecy of voting), 135(removal of ballot papers from polling station), 135A(booth capturing) and 136(other offences and penalties) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and sections 465(punishment for forgery), 468(forgery for cheating) and 471(using forged document as genuine) of the IPC.
The punishment for the offences under the Representation of the People Act range from a few months to a maximum of two years, while those under the IPC carry jail terms from two years to seven years.
According to the FIR, the action was taken based on a report sent to the Alappuzha District Police Chief by the District Collector who is also the District Election Officer.
In the controversial video, Sudhakaran was heard saying that NGO union members should not cast their votes for rival candidates.
He said that it is not necessary for all NGO members to vote for the party, but those who submit sealed ballots should not assume that "we won't find out" whom they have voted for.
"We will unseal them, verify, and correct them. Even if a case is filed against me for saying this, I don't mind," he was quoted as saying in the video aired by news channels.
Sudhakaran had said that some NGO union members had cast their votes for opposition candidates.
"When KSTA leader K V Devadas contested for Parliament from Alappuzha, postal ballots were unsealed and examined at the district committee office. It was found that 15 per cent had voted for the opposing candidate. Patching up what's broken isn't difficult," he had said.
KSTA is a school teachers' organisation backed by the CPI(M).
It was not clear from the video whether the tampering of postal ballots--after they were unsealed--was carried out by him or his associates during the 1989 Lok Sabha election for the Alappuzha seat.
Sudhakaran said that Devadas had contested against Congress leader Vakkam Purushothaman in that election and lost by 18,000 votes.
However, the Election Commission documents say in the election, Purushothaman secured 3,75,763 votes, defeating CPI(M) candidate Devadas, who received 3,50,640 votes.
Purushothaman won by a margin of 25,123 votes, which accounted for 3.36 per cent of the total valid votes.
The CPI(M) Alappuzha district leadership had rejected Sudhakaran's claim, stating that nothing of the kind had happened and that the party had no role in it.
