Apple iPhone maker Foxconn has informed the government that 25 per cent of its new hires are married women and its safety protocol, which requires all employees to avoid wearing metal irrespective of gender or religion, is not discriminatory, sources said.
In an informal note shared with the government after reports suggested it is not hiring married women, Foxconn stated that such stipulations are not part of its policy and these claims may have been made by those individuals who were not hired, sources said.
They added that such media reports malign the fast-growing Indian manufacturing sector.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Wednesday has sought a detailed report from the Tamil Nadu labour department on the issue of married women not being allowed to work at the Foxconn India Apple iPhone Plant, as reported by the media.
"Foxconn had clarified that 25 per cent of the latest hires are married women. This would mean nearly one-third of the total women are married. This ratio compares favourably to any factory in this sector currently operating in India," one of the sources said.
The Foxconn factory currently has about 70 per cent women and 30 per cent men and the Tamil Nadu plant is the largest factory for women employment in the country with the total employment having touched 45,000 workers during peak periods, they said.
The company has also informed that the discussion around Hindu married women being discriminated against for wearing metals (ornaments and jewelry) is "entirely slanted" and wearing metal in such factories is a safety issue, a fact well recognised by both the industry and the government.
"Any person wearing metals - man or woman - regardless of their status (single or married) and their religion (Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh etc.) are required to remove metals while working in the factory," the source said quoting the company's informal note.
For safety reasons, no one wearing metal is allowed to work on the shop floor and this is a prevalent practice in several industries.
According to sources, the company has stated that the media report is based on anecdotal comments by 5-10 people or potential job seekers.
These comments likely came from candidates who did not get the job or no longer work at Foxconn.
No immediate comments were received from Foxconn in response to an email query sent to the company on the matter.

As per the company's website, Liu oversees Foxconn&rsquo;s global operations, encompassing over one million employees across 24 countries/regions and revenues that exceeded USD 206 billion in 2021.
Liu founded Young Micro Systems in 1988, IC design company in 1995, and ITeX in 1997. His firm Young Micro systems merged with &nbsp;Foxconn in 1994 and the latter was listed on NASDAQ in 2001.
Liu's academic journey began with a bachelor's degree in Electrophysics from Taiwan's National Chiao Tung University. He then went on to pursue a master's degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Southern California.

Taiwan's Foxconn has withdrawn from a USD 19.5 billion semiconductor joint venture with mining baron Anil Agarwal's Vedanta Ltd as the venture struggled to get a technology partner to make chips that are used in mobile phones to refrigerators and cars.
Following the statement, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT said Foxconn's decision to scrap its tie-up with the Anil Agrawal-led Vedanta for the semiconductor business in India will have no adverse impact on the country's plan towards the sector.&nbsp;&nbsp;
"This decision of Foxconn to withdraw from its JV with Vedanta has no impact on India's semiconductor fab goals. None. (sic)," the minister tweeted, adding that both the companies have significant investments in India and are "valued investors who are creating jobs and growth".
In a statement, Foxconn, the world's largest contract electronics maker, said it "has determined it will not move forward on the joint venture with Vedanta." Agarwal's metals-to-oil conglomerate responded saying it was "fully committed to its semiconductor fab project and we have lined up other partners to set up India's first foundry." It however did not give details of the new partners.
Foxconn, best known for assembling iPhones and other Apple products, and Vedanta last year signed a pact to set up semiconductor and display production plants in Gujarat.
European chipmaker STMicroelectronics was being roped in as a technology partner for the venture but talks were deadlocked.
Most of the world's chips are manufactured in a handful of countries and India, which expects its semiconductor market to be worth USD 63 billion by 2026, is a late entrant.
Three applications - one from the Vedanta-Foxconn joint venture, another from a global consortium of ISMC and one from Singapore-based IGSS Ventures - were received in response to the government's incentive scheme for local manufacture of semiconductors.
The other two applications too haven't made much progress.
Just last week, Vedanta announced that it will acquire the semiconductor and display glass units from group company Twin Star Technologies Ltd.
It is to buy 100 per cent of Vedanta Foxconn Semiconductors Pvt and Vedanta Displays Ltd from Twin Star, a unit of Vedanta's ultimate parent Volcan Investments Ltd.
In a statement on Monday Foxconn said: "In order to explore more diverse development opportunities, according to mutual agreement, Foxconn has determined it will not move forward on the joint venture with Vedanta." Foxconn said it is "working to remove the Foxconn name from what now is a fully-owned entity of Vedanta".
"Foxconn has no connection to the entity and efforts to keep its original name will cause confusion for future stakeholders," Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) said.
The statement said that for over a year, Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) and Vedanta have worked hard to bring a great semiconductor idea to reality. It has been a fruitful experience that can position both companies strongly going forward.
"Foxconn is confident about the direction of India's semiconductor development. We will continue to strongly support the government's 'Make In India' ambitions and establish a diversity of local partnerships that meet the needs of stakeholders," it said.
After the withdrawal, Vedanta asserted that it is fully committed to its semiconductor project and has lined up other partners to set up India's first foundry.
Vedanta said that it has redoubled efforts to fulfill Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for semiconductors and affirmed that India remains pivotal in repositioning global semiconductor supply chains.
"Vedanta reiterates that it is fully committed to its semiconductor fab project and we have lined up other partners to set up India&rsquo;s first foundry. We will continue to grow our semiconductor team, and we have the license for production-grade technology for 40 nm from a prominent Integrated Device Manufacturer (IDM)," Vedanta said in a statement.
The company had announced plans to set up its chip plant in Gujarat with an investment of around Rs 1.5 lakh crore.
"We will shortly acquire a license for production-grade 28 nm as well. Vedanta has redoubled its efforts to fulfill the prime minister's vision for semiconductors and India remains pivotal in repositioning global semiconductor supply chains," the statement said.&nbsp;

The CM said his &ldquo;government is on a mission to transform Telangana for better and has undertaken several marquee projects to realise the vision of Bangaru Telangana. Foxconn&rsquo;s unit will help in generating large scale employment to youth and will help attract more such industries to the state.&rdquo; Rao emphasized that Telangana considers Taiwan as a natural partner and that the state is glad to be a part of Foxconn&rsquo;s growth story.
He called Foxconn's huge investment and the opportunity to create more than one lakh jobs like never before in Telangana 'commendable.' The Chief Minister further said steps will be taken to ensure that one lakh jobs are available to the state's youth and assured Young Liu that his government will provide necessary support to Foxconn for its operations in the state.
The Foxconn Chairman lauded the friendly industrial development eco system created in Telangana and expressed happiness over the progress achieved by the state in the industrial sector, especially in IT and related electronics sectors, in just eight years.

Unless places such as India and Vietnam can do NPI too, they will remain stuck playing second fiddle, say supply-chain specialists.

Not all the videos that showed workers purportedly leaving the facility could be verified. It is unclear if the workers leaving the facility had escaped or if they were allowed to leave.
Foxconn did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Volunteers from nearby villages put out food and drinks for the Foxconn workers. One such volunteer, not identified out of privacy concerns, was put in charge of distributing supplies that his village in Xingyang county had prepared.
He said that the people shown in a video he uploaded to social media were Foxconn workers because they would have to take that road if they were leaving the facility.

The workers' exodus comes after reports that Foxconn had placed a number of workers under quarantine following a COVID-19 outbreak in the factory.
The Foxconn facility in Zhengzhou can accommodate up to 350,000 factory workers, but it is not clear how many are currently employed by the factory. It is also unclear how many of them have left, or how many were affected by COVID-19 curbs implemented in the factory prior to their departure.
Local media reports said that Foxconn workers complained of poor food quality and a lack of medical care for those who tested positive amid growing concerns that the infection could be spreading. The company also denied rumors that 20,000 people in the plant had been infected with COVID-19.
