The U.S. Commerce Department has specifically cited data collection risks and foreign manipulation.
Imagine this: foreign entities gaining control of U.S. vehicles, jeopardizing the privacy and safety of millions of Americans on the road. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo painted a grim picture, warning that a foreign adversary could remotely control vehicles, potentially leading to road chaos.
If these proposals go through, by 2027, software prohibitions will kick in, and by 2029, hardware will also be banned. It&rsquo;s a major escalation to block any potential surveillance or manipulation by foreign adversaries like China and Russia. Chinese-made cars could soon disappear from U.S. roads altogether.
Nearly all new cars are &lsquo;connected,&rsquo; meaning they share data with devices inside and outside the vehicle. And this is exactly what has the U.S. worried.
In fact, this move is part of a larger crackdown on Chinese tech. Earlier this month, the U.S. slapped a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs, batteries, and key minerals.
What&rsquo;s China&rsquo;s response? Not surprisingly, they&rsquo;re not happy. The Chinese Embassy in Washington is pushing back, saying the U.S. is acting against global trade rules. But the U.S. isn't backing down. White House officials say the threat from Chinese software in cars is real, with malware found in critical U.S. infrastructure.

The demand for Electric Vehicles by FMCG and ecommerce companies have doubled from last year. This as the companies are looking to cut costs by over half and meet carbon emission reduction targets. As per Economic Times, Amazon, Hindustan Unilever, Swiggy, Coca-Cola, Zomato, Amul, Flipkart, BigBasket and Bisleri are among the larger companies switching to EVs to service consumers and retailers.
"We have started EVs for last-mile deliveries for ice-cream vending," Jayen Mehta, managing director of India's largest dairy maker Amul told Economic Times. He further added that milk distributors in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab are also using EVs for delivery.

The ecommerce sector is also heavily leaning on electric two-wheelers. Amitabh Saran, cofounder of electric three-wheeler company Altigreen has told Economic Times that the operation costs are about a fraction of diesel or CNG-driven ones which helps in saving costs. Altigreen has supplied EVs to Amazon, Flipkart, BigBasket, HUL, Bisleri and Coca-Cola.
"The operating costs are about a fraction of diesel or CNG-driven ones, translating into substantial savings for operators," Saran told Economic Times.&nbsp;
He further added that the potential for e-vehicles in India is huge and that the country has not yet explored the possibilities.&nbsp;
"Even if we were to carve out use cases which require heavier payloads and exports, the market size is still about 1.2-1.3 million units per annum. India has not yet explored formats for three-wheelers fully. The potential is huge,"Amitabh Saran told Economic Times.
The companies are also signing partnership deals with EV manufacturers to set up charging units to enable seamless operations. Amazon India is partnering with Eicher Motors and Buses for 1,000 electric trucks, for middle-mile and last-mile delivery over the next five years while TVS Motor Co &nbsp;has inked a strategic partnership with food delivery and search platform Zomato for 10,000 electric scooters over the next two years.
As per Economic Times, over 1,00,000 electric cars and about a million electric two-wheelers (E2Ws) are expected to be sold this fiscal year, from about 50,000 electric cars and about 727,000 E2Ws in FY23.

For electric two-wheelers registered on or after June 1, 2023, the Heavy Industries Ministry has announced amendments that will reduce the subsidy offered under the FAME-II (Faster Adoption of Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India) scheme

Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles on Tuesday said the sudden reduction of subsidy of electric two-wheelers may lead to a major decline in EV adoption, impacting the entire industry for a considerable period of time.
Startup players in the electric mobility space, however, welcomed the government's decision saying it was time for the EV industry to stand on its own.
The Heavy Industries Ministry has notified changes for reducing subsidy provided under FAME-II (Faster Adoption of Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India) scheme applicable on electric two-wheelers registered on or after June 1, 2023.
Subsequently, for electric two-wheelers, the demand incentive will be Rs 10,000 per kWh. The cap on incentives for electric two-wheelers will be 15 per cent of the ex-factory price of vehicles from 40 per cent at present.
Reacting to the changes, Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) Director General Sohinder Gill said, "The sudden reduction of subsidy may lead to a major decline in EV adoption, impacting the entire industry for a considerable period of time." The ground reality is that the Indian market remains price-sensitive, and the total cost of ownership is not firmly established in consumers' minds, he asserted.
Gill further said with the majority of petrol two-wheelers costing less than Rs 1 lakh, there are fewer chances of consumer spending upwards of Rs 1.5 lakh just factoring in the total cost of ownership.
However, Gill said the heavy industries ministry had already given a hint of this a few months back announcing that they are about to achieve their target of the 1 million sales in 4 years and subsidy may not continue thereafter.
The ministry was left with no choice but to either suddenly stop the subsidy or somehow manage the rest of the year by greatly reducing the budget and drawing some unspent money from the E3W budget, he added.
"In the larger context, this may lead to higher bills of crude oil imports and adding to the ever-increasing air pollution in most of the Indian cities," Gill said.

The price tag makes it the most affordable electric car in India with over 250 km range.

As of now, there are no direct competitors for the Tiago EV. However, it will serve as a more affordable alternative to the upcoming Citroen C3 EV.&nbsp;
Tata Motors currently leads the passenger vehicle EV market in India, with a market share of around 88 per cent, with Nexon EV leading the sales charts.&nbsp;

A major fire broke out in an electric bike showroom on the ground floor of a hotel in Secunderabad left seven people dead and several others injured. 
According to reports, the fire broke out at an electric scooter recharging unit on the ground floor of a building, which then spread to the first and second floors. 
The fire broke out at Ruby Electrical Scooter Showroom located near the Passport office at Secunderabad. 
Hyderabad Commissioner CV Anand said in attempt to save their lives many people jumped from the building and were rescued by locals.
Meanwhile, Telangana Home Minister Mohd Mahmood Ali called it a "very unfortunate" incident and said that they are probing the cause of the fire.

This comes after Okinawa Autotech announced the recall of  over 3000 Praise Pro e-scooters on April 16 to fix issues related to its batteries, just before its dealership was engulfed in flames in Chennai.

EV fire latest news : With increasing incidents of electric two-wheelers catching fire, Union minister Nitin Gadkari said the government will issue necessary orders on defaulting companies after receiving the report of an expert panel that has been formed to enquire into the matter.
In a series of tweets, Gadkari said several mishaps involving electric two-wheelers have come to light in the last two months.
"We have constituted an expert committee to enquire into these incidents and make recommendations on remedial steps.
"Based on the reports, we will issue necessary orders on the defaulting companies," the road transport and highways minister said.
Gadkari added: "We will soon issue quality-centric guidelines for Electric Vehicles." The minister asserted that if any company is found negligent in its processes, a heavy penalty will be imposed and a recall of all defective vehicles will also be ordered.
Meanwhile, companies may take advance action to recall all defective batches of vehicles immediately, Gadkari tweeted. "Under the leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi ji, our government is committed to ensure safety of each and every commuter," he tweeted.

Police have registered an FIR against the e-scooter manufacturer Pure&nbsp;EV who has seen three incidents of battery fires recently. So far along with Pure,&nbsp;one Ola, two Okinawa, and 20 Jitendra EV scooters have caught fire.
This is not the first incident where a fire has claimed a life.&nbsp;In a second unfortunate event, a father and daughter were killed in the early hours of March 26 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, when an unknown type Okinawa electric scooter caught fire.

Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation signed MOU with the State of Gujarat, India to invest approximately 150 billion yen or Rs 10,440 crore for local manufacturing of EVs, as per the company's exchange filing.

The MOU was signed on March 19, 2022 at India-Japan Economic Forum held in New Delhi, in the presence of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Toshihiro Suzuki, Representative Director and President, Suzuki Motor Corporation and Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director &amp; CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited were joined by eminent senior government personnel of India and Japan at the ceremony. Speaking at the Forum, Toshihiro Suzuki said, &ldquo;Suzuki's future mission is to achieve carbon neutrality with small cars.&rdquo; He added, &ldquo;We will continue active investment in India to realize Self-reliant India (Atma-nirbhar Bharat).&rdquo;

Making it clear that relaxations will not be provided to US-based electric vehicles major Tesla unless it participates in manufacturing activities in India, Union Minister Krishan Pal Gurjar on Tuesday said there cannot be a situation where the market is India but jobs are created in China.
The minister of state for heavy industries also told the Lok Sabha during Question Hour that the company is yet to apply for schemes as per the government's policy.
Last year, the Elon Musk-led company sought a reduction in import duties on electric vehicles (EVs) in India but the Ministry of Heavy Industries asked the firm to start manufacturing its iconic EVs in the country before any tax concessions can be considered.
Gurjar said the government has Production Linked Incentives for automobile and auto components as well as for manufacturing Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery. Both schemes are open for domestic as well as foreign entities.
Responding to a query on Tesla, the minister said "the company wants workers from China and market of India. This is not possible in Modi government... our government's policy is that if india market is to be used, job opportunities will have to be given to Indians." The minister's reply came in response to a question by Congress member K Suresh on whether the government would invite Tesla to enter the Indian market and steps being taken to promote mass production of electric vehicles in the country.
"Want to ask the member if they want india's money to go to China? That company has not applied as per our policy. For that (company), doors of India are open, they can come apply as per policy, set up company, give jobs to our people, increase government revenue," the minister said.
"Modiji ki sarkar mein ye nahi ho sakta ki rozgar Cheen ko aur market Bharat ki... Modiji sarkar ki neeti hai ki agar market Bharat ki hai, rozgar bhi Bharat ke logon ko milega.... (Under Modi government, it cannot happen that jobs are in China while market is India... The government's policy is that if the market is India, then peope in India should get jobs)," Gurjar said.
He was responding to another member's query about the government's position on exemptions sought by Tesla and some states expressing interest to have the company's manufacturing units.
