In a major breakthrough amidst the ongoing decisive war against drugs, Counter Intelligence (CI) Amritsar has apprehended three drug smugglers and recovered 5 kg heroin and Rs 4.45 lakh drug money from their possession, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav on Thursday.
Those arrested have been identified as Husanpreet Singh, a resident of Prime City at Chheharta in Amritsar, Karandeep Singha alias Manna and Maninder Singh, both residents of Attari Mandi in Amritsar. Apart from recovering heroin and drug money, Police teams have also impounded their Honda Activa (PB02DK8780) and Hero Deluxe HF (PB02EP5854), which they were riding.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said that team of CI Amritsar has received a tip-off that accused Karandeep Singh and Maninder Singh are indulged in the smuggling of heroin and recently retrieved a huge consignment of heroin dropped with the help of drones by Pakistan smugglers and are going to supply it further to drug smuggler Husanpreet Singh.
The tip further revealed that both the accused persons are coming at the Amritsar-Attari Road near Punjabi Bagh Palace on a white Honda Activa to deliver this drug consignment to drug smuggler Husanpreet Singh, who is also reaching there on his black Motorcycle Hero Deluxe HF, he said.
The DGP said that acting swiftly, teams from CI Amritsar laid a special naka near Punjabi Bagh Resort at Attari Road and arrested all the accused persons after recovering heroin consignment and drug money from their possession. Further investigations are to establish forward and backward linkages in this case and identify Pak-based drug smugglers, he added.
In this regard, a case FIR No. 67 dated 04.12.2024 has been registered under section 21, 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act at Police Station State Special Operations Cell (SSOC), Amritsar. Due to the recovery of drug money in this case from the accused, the severity of the offence in this FIR has been enhanced by incorporating section 27-A of the NDPS Act.

A latest study has shed light on the impact of psychedelic drugs on the brain. It was noted in the study that psychedelics can unlock the critical periods in the brain that helps in learning new skills.&nbsp;
The study was published in the journal Nature and the findings were those from Johns Hopkins University in the US.&nbsp;
For the research, scientists focused on the ability of five psychedelic drugs - ketamine, LSD, MDMA, psilocybin, and ibogaine. The research team also conducted a behavioural test on adult male mice to understand what they learn from their social environment.&nbsp;
It was found that the critical period to learn new things of the mice who were given ketamine, stayed open for 48 hours. On the other hand, this state for the mice who were given psilocybin, stayed open for two weeks. Whereas, the mice who were given LSD, MDMA &nbsp;and ibogaine, their critical period remained open for three, two, and four weeks, respectively.
Other than this, it was also found that there were expression differences among 65 protein-producing genes during and after the critical period was opened.&nbsp;

According to a recent UN report, Cannabis use has widely increased in countries that have legalised the drug. The regular intake of the drug also rose during the Covid-19 lockdowns, raising the risk of depression and suicide, the report added.&nbsp;
Various U.S states have legalised non-medical the use of cannabis including Washington and Colorado. Other countries including Canada have taken similar steps.&nbsp;
While cannabis has been the world&rsquo;s most widely used drug, the content of the drug is also getting stronger. As per the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) annual World Drug Report, roughly 284 million people or 5.6 per cent of the world&rsquo;s population consumed drugs such as heroin, cocaine and ecstasy in 2020. Of those, 209 million used cannabis.&nbsp;
The consumption of cannabis among teenagers has not changed much but the drug use has majorly increased among young adults, the report concluded.&nbsp;

The Punjab Police on Sunday said it has busted a drug smuggling cartel and arrested two men with 10 kg heroin and a sophisticated drone, from their possession.
Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the accused have been identified as Dalbir and Jagdish, both residents of Gharinda in Amritsar.
They had been engaged in drug trafficking for the past three years and have no criminal case registered against them, he said.
Yadav said the Amritsar Rural Police in an intelligence-based operation successfully busted this cartel which had been supplying contraband to Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh after getting them from across the border using drones. &nbsp;The US-made sophisticated drone recovered from the duo smugglers is a DJI series drone and is worth Rs 20 lakh. It has hi-tech features, including long-lasting battery backup and infrared-based night vision camera, he said.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Amritsar Rural Police, Swapan Sharma said both the smugglers had a well-oiled distribution network in the neighbouring states, which has been identified.
The Amritsar Rural Police have seized 39 kg heroin in the last five months.

Police across districts are also sharing information regarding arrests and seizure in NDPS cases on their Facebook accounts to strike fear among the drug peddlers and addicts.
The idea is to come up with &ldquo;short and crisp messages&rdquo; to sensitise people on drug abuse, a senior police officer said.
"Kindly enjoy snow and winters in Himachal. Don't do drugs or else, you may end up spending a very long time behind bars," said DGP HImachal Sanjay Kundu.
Another such post involved a photograph that showed the word &ldquo;drugs&rdquo; in handcuffs, captioned with a message &ldquo;says yes to life, no to drugs.&rdquo; The social media approach has received good responses, not only on drugs but also on road safety, cyber crime, and other important issues, highly placed officers in the police department said.
According to the state police, a total of 1,732 persons were arrested in 1,195 NDPS cases in 2022 till October end.
The police have so far seized 274 kgs charas, 31 kgs opium, 306 kgs poppy husk, 164 kgs ganja, smack and cocaine, 7.9 kgs of heroin (chitta) and 30,152 capsules and tablets.
They have also destroyed 70,602 poppy plants and 47,737 cannabis plants.
Stepping up its campaign against drug peddlers, narcotic sniffer dogs have also been pressed into service to check smuggling of drugs at district barriers.
The dogs trained by the CID work under the supervision of their handlers and can smell concealed narcotics.
Sniffer dogs can recognise at least 13 contraband substances, including cocaine, cannabis and opioids, officials said.

Drug cartel that controlled one-third of cocaine trade in Europe has been busted. The latest series of raids across Europe and the United Arab Emirates took place between November 8-19.
As many as 49 people were arrested in raids. The super-cartel as per EU police agency Europol was operational in various countries including Dubai, France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands.&nbsp; EU police agency said that over 30 tonnes of cocaine has been seized in the international drug operation.&nbsp;
The drugpins have been the probe agency's high value targets given their super cartel's control over one-third of Europe's cocaine's trade.
Among the arrested indiviudals, Europol said two suspects held from Dubai raids are linked to The Netherlands while two others are linked to Spain and France each.&nbsp;
Europol sources also told AFP that one of the Dutch suspects was "an extremely big fish". Even in the years 2020 and 2021, the man was held for allegedly importing thousands of kilos of cocaine into the Netherlands.
The Netherlands was the country where most of the arrests were made, with 14 suspects arrested in 2021. Europol said six &ldquo;high-value targets" were arrested in Dubai.
Record amounts of cocaine are being seized in Europe. Its availability on the continent has never been higher, with extremely high purity and low prices.
More than 214 tons of cocaine were seized in the region in 2020, a 6 per cent increase from the previous year, and experts from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction believe that amount could reach 300 tons in 2022.

Hong Kong customs seized 1.8 metric tonnes (2 tonnes) of liquid methamphetamine in the city's biggest-ever meth bust, authorities said Saturday.
The drugs, which were seized October 23, had been concealed in bottles labelled as coconut water in a cargo shipment that arrived in Hong Kong by sea, according to a government statement.
The haul is estimated to be worth 1.1 billion Hong Kong dollars (USD 140 million).
Authorities found that 1,800 bottles out of the total 7,700 bottles contained liquid meth.
The bust is the largest on record among meth cases in terms of the amount and market value.
Authorities are still investigating the case, and no arrests have been made.
The stash of drugs were bound for Australia, and had been shipped from Mexico via Hong Kong, according to authorities who spoke Saturday at a news conference.
In Australia, the market value of the drugs could reach about HK dollar 8 billion (USD 1 billion).
The cargo had raised suspicion as it was unusually large for a coconut water shipment from Mexico.
The meth haul is the second found in shipments from Mexico to Australia in less than two weeks.
Custom officials earlier this month seized about USD 5.9 million worth of crystal meth concealed in a shipment of electrical transformers that were also bound for Australia from Mexico.&nbsp;

Could you imagine undergoing a surgery without being given anaesthesia? Can you imagine what would the world be without some medicines? Well, we cannot too. But we have also learnt in our evolution that today&rsquo;s wonder drug could be tomorrow&rsquo;s problem drug.
Here are five drugs we can safely say made a huge difference to our lives, often in ways we didn&rsquo;t expect.
<h3>1. Anaesthesia</h3>
It was late 1700s, English chemist Joseph Priestley made a gas which English chemist Humphry Davy thought could be used as pain relief in surgery, but instead, it became a recreational drug until the 1830s. That&rsquo;s when French chemist Jean Dumas made the gas named chloroform which Scottish doctor James Young used it in 1847 to assist birth. The medicine relieved surgical patients who would often die of shock from the pain. But anaesthesias are still dangerous because of the risks of suppressing the nervous system.
<h3>2. Nitroglycerin</h3>
1800s was the century of inventions but none was probably more important that the world-changing drug Nitroglycerin. Invented in 1847, Nitroglycerin displaced gunpowder as the most powerful explosive in the world and was also the first one to treat angina, the peculiar chest pain that is linked with heart disease. Known to have increased the average life span, particularly in the West, it also paved the way for medications used to lower blood pressure, and other heart ailments.
<h3>3. Penicillin</h3>
 There are several instances where you must've come across some accidental miracles and this is a classic example of that. In 1928, Scottish physician Alexander Fleming went on a holiday and left some cultures of the bacterium streptococcus on his laboratory bench. Well, when he came back from his vacation what he witnessed was going to change history and of course, he wasn't aware of that. He saw some airborne Penicillium which is a contaminated fungal that had stopped the streptococcus from growing. Later, it was mass produced and it changed the course of history as it was used in World War II. This drug surely saved the lives of several people who were suffering from septicemia.
<h3>4. Diazepam</h3>
Anti-depressant and stress relieving medication are today's things but it started as Diazepam. In 1959, Polish-American chemist Leo Sternbach chemically altered Librium in 1959 and produced a much stronger drug called diazepam. This drug was marketed in 1963 as Valium. It was cheap and easily available and from 1969 till 1982 it was the most selling drug in the US. From this drug, the culture of managing stress and anxiety with the help of medication came into existence. However, this drug had some side effects.
<h3>5. The Pill</h3>
The Pill was a game changer when it comes to contraceptive methods. In 1951, the US birth control advocate Margaret Sanger asked researcher Gregory Pincus to develop a hormonal contraceptive. During the research, Pincus found that progesterone was helpful to stop ovulation and was used to develop a trial pill.
In 1960, the new drug was released and it took almost ten years to prove a link between oral contraceptive use and its serious side effects.
Due to the drug, now there are small families and increased incomes as women also started joining the workforce. However, it&rsquo;s still raising questions about how the medical profession has experimented on women&rsquo;s bodies.

19,320 kg of drugs were destroyed in Delhi, 1,309 kg in Chennai, 6,761 kg in Guwahati and 3,077 kg in Kolkata.
The Narcotics Control Bureau had started the drug disposal campaign from June 1 and over 51,217 kg of narcotics have been disposed by it in 11 states till July 29.
With  the disposal of over 30,468 kg of drugs, the total quantity will reach around 81,686 kg surpassing the NCB's target.

The Supreme Court of India warned a petitioner that if narcotics consumption in small quantities is legalised, then drug dealers will peddle substances in smaller quantities too.
The top court refused to entertain a PIL seeking scrapping of certain provisions of the NDPS Act which penalise drug addicts for using banned substances for personal consumption.
The petitioner argued, "It is important to take steps to minimise the stigma and provide health care benefits and facilities of de-addiction to the people affected by substance abuse, rather than subjecting them to punishment under the criminal justice system."
The Supreme Court reportedly said that courts take note of personal consumption angles in cases, and award lesser punishment for drug abuse. The petitioner withdrew the PIL as the court did not wish to hear the matter.

The Goa Police on Friday arrested two more people, including a club owner and a drug dealer, in connection with the death of Haryana BJP leader Sonali Phogat.    

The Goa Police said Phogat's drink was spiked by her associates Sangwan and Singh at Curlies and CCTV footage showed the BJP leader limping inside the pub, reported NDTV.

The Goa Police on Friday arrested two more people, including a club owner and a suspected drug dealer, in connection with the death of Haryana BJP leader Sonali Phogat.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Drugs have also been, reportedly, recovered by the cops from the club's washroom.
Phogat had visited Curlie's restaurant-cum-nightclub at Anjuna beach the night before her death.
Earlier, two of Phogat's associates, Sudhir Sangwan and Sukhwinder Singh were held in the case.
"The owner was arrested because drugs have been recovered from the club. He was arrested after questioning. The nature of the drugs seized is yet to be confirmed," the Goa Police told India Today.
The nature of the drugs, however, is yet to be ascertained.&nbsp;

The Tik Tok star-turned-politician was rushed to a hospital on Monday in North Goa where she was declared brought dead. The police had, initially, said that she appeared to have suffered a heart attack.&nbsp;
However, on Wednesday, Phogat&rsquo;s brother Rinku Dhaka filed a complaint accusing her personal assistant Sangwan and his aide Singh of murdering her. On Thursday, the police filed a murder case.&nbsp;
The two murder accused confessed to having mixed an "obnoxious chemical&rdquo; in Phogat's drink and they will be produced before a court soon, as per a statement by the Inspector General of Police Omvir Singh Bishnoi.
The incident took place at Curlies Restaurant at Anjuna in North Goa district between the night of August 22 and the early hours of August 23, said Singh.
Meanwhile, the doctor, who conducted the postmortem, reserved his opinion on the cause of her death pending chemical analysis. He had written that &ldquo;multiple blunt force injuries&rdquo; were found on Phogat&rsquo;s body.&nbsp;
On Friday, Bishnoi said that those injuries could be abrasions that Phogat sustained while she was being taken to the hospital, PTI reported.&nbsp;

In a major crackdown on drug use, an alleged rave party was busted in Hyderabad in the early hours of April 3. Many relatives of actors, politicians, and other eminent personalities were reportedly found at the party at a luxury hotel.
Banned drugs like cocaine and marijuana were reportedly seized. The task force team of Hyderabad police reportedly conducted a raid at a pub at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Banjara Hills.
Among the attendees at the alleged rave party were actor Naga Babu's daughter Niharika Konidela, and singer Rahul Sipligunj, as per an NDTV report. Sipligunj had won the third edition of the Bigg Boss Telugu reality show.
The daughter of a top Andhra police official, and the son of TDP parliamentarian were also at the party, as per the report. The pub which was raided is reportedly owned by the daughter of a former Khammam MP.
Naga Babu has reportedly claimed that his daughter has no association with drugs. Telangana Congress leader Anjan Kumar Yadav reportedly claimed that his son went to a birthday party and lies were being floated.
The station house officer of Banjara Hills police station has been suspended, while a charge memo has been sent to ACP (Banjara Hills division) for negligence, as per reports.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and its zonal director Sameer Wankhede approached a special court on Monday against allegations of extortion levelled against them in the cruise drugs seizure case, in which Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan is an accused.
Wankhede in his affidavit submitted to the court refuted the allegations levelled against him, and claimed he was under a "lurking threat of arrest as it does not suit some vested interests for conducting an honest and impartial investigation".
Wankhede also claimed that he was being personally targeted by a well-known political figure, and the only reason he can fathom is that the NCB had arrested "this person's son-in-law Sameer Khan".
Notably, Sameer Khan is the son-in-law of NCP leader and Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik.
The NCB and Wankhede in their affidavits, submitted to the court designated to hear cases related to the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), also said the allegations against them were an attempt to create hurdles and scuttle the investigation in the case.
The NCB in its affidavit sought that there should be no tampering with the evidence or investigation in the case.
On Sunday, an independent witness in the case, in a statement to the media, claimed that Rs 25 crore was demanded by an official of the NCB and other persons, including absconding witness K P Gosavi, to let off Aryan Khan in the case.
Prabhakar Sail, the 'independent witness', told media persons that he had overheard Gosavi telling one Sam D'Souza over the phone, after Aryan Khan was brought to the NCB office following the October 2 raid, about a demand of Rs 25 crore and "to settle at Rs 18 crore as they have to give Rs eight crore to Sameer Wankhede".
Sail had said he would soon release evidence to support his claim.
The NCB and Wankhede rubbished these claims in their affidavits submitted to the court on Monday.
"After spearheading the investigation in the cruise ship case, I am being personally targeted by a well-known political figure for reasons best known to him," Wankhede said in his affidavit, adding the only reason he can fathom is that the NCB had arrested this politician's son-in-law Sameer Khan.
Wankhede's affidavit claimed there has been personal vendetta against him and his family members.

The restriction comes as NIA&nbsp;continues it's probe on the Mundra&nbsp;Port drug haul.&nbsp; In September nearly 3,000 kilograms of heroin valued at Rs 20,000 cr was seized from two containers at Gujarat's Mundra port, run by the Adani Group. The consignment had come from Afghanistan, one of the largest illegal producers of opium. The&nbsp;National Investigation Agency&nbsp;(NIA) on Saturday conducted searches at multiple locations in the country in connection to the drug haul and said various incriminating documents, articles and other items have been seized. The consignment was marked for&nbsp;Aashi Trading Company of&nbsp;Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. Last month, a special court for NDPS in Gujarat directed the DRI to investigate if the &ldquo;Mundra Adani Port, its management and its authority gained any benefits&rdquo; from the import of the consignment.
