The 2025 Delhi Assembly elections have delivered a historic verdict, bringing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) back to power in the national capital after 27 years.
With the final vote count completed, the BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) managed only 22&mdash;marking a significant decline from its 2020 tally of 62.
The Congress, continuing its downward spiral, failed to win a single seat for the third consecutive election.

Once a dominant force in Delhi politics, the Congress party suffered its third consecutive zero-seat result. Its failure to win a single seat since 2015 highlights its diminishing role in the capital&rsquo;s political landscape.
Prominent Congress leaders, including Alka Lamba, performed poorly, securing less than 5,000 votes in key constituencies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hailed the people of Delhi for putting an end to the "lies and deception" politics of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) by giving a clear mandate to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assembly elections.
He said that people have put an end to "short-cut" politics of Kejriwal and removed a "major obstacle" in the way of Delhi's development.

"Delhi's mandate also clarified that there is no place for shortcuts or lies and deception in politics. Janata ne short cut rajneeti ka short circuit kar diya (People have short-circuited the politics of shortcut)," PM Modi said while addressing a gathering at the party's headquarters after the resounding victory in assembly polls.
<h3>BJP's Return to Power</h3>
BJP has won 48 seats, while AAP has won just 22 seats against 62 in the 2020 assembly polls.
The BJP is returning to power in the national capital after 27 years, ending over 10 years of Aam Aadmi Party rule.
Several AAP leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, ex-Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, and three-time MLA Somnath Bharti, lost from their strongholds.
<h3>Criticism of AAP's Politics</h3>
The PM slammed the AAP's politics of "protests, confrontation, and administrative uncertainty."
"Today, you Delhiites have removed a major obstacle in the way of Delhi's development," PM Modi added
. Lashing out at AAP, he said, "The real owner of Delhi is only the people of Delhi. Those who thought of being the owners of Delhi have been confronted with the truth."
<h3>PM Modi on Anna Hazare</h3>
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Anna Hazare must have got some relief from pain following AAP's defeat in the Delhi Assembly election. He added that Hazare had been "bearing the pain of the misdeeds of these people for a long time."
Earlier in the day, Anna Hazare had criticised AAP for their alleged involvement in controversies surrounding liquor and money.
PM Modi said AAP was born out of the movement against corruption but became deeply involved in it.
"The party born out of the movement against corruption got involved in corruption. It became such a party of the country whose Chief Minister and Ministers went to jail on corruption charges. Those who used to give themselves certificates of honesty turned out to be corrupt. This was a big betrayal with Delhi," PM Modi said.

<h3>AAP's Scams and Arrogance</h3>
PM Modi further attacked AAP, stating that the liquor scam had defamed Delhi. "The scams in schools and hospitals troubled the poorest of the poor, and on top of that, their arrogance was so much that when the world was dealing with Corona, these people were building 'Sheesh Mahal'."
Earlier, Anna Hazare had said that AAP did not understand the importance of character in politics, which led to their downfall.
He remarked, "They got tangled in liquor and money - his (Arvind Kejriwal's) image was dented because of it and that's why they are getting fewer votes in the election."

PM Modi assured the people of Delhi of "good governance" and highlighted the public's trust in a double-engine government.

PM Modi also acknowledged the people from East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, living in Delhi, who were instrumental in BJP's victory, noting that he is an MP from Varanasi, which comes under the 'Purvanchal' region.

"These AAP-da people resorted to conspiracies every day to hide their scams. Now, the Delhi poll verdict has come. I am giving a guarantee that in the first session of the assembly, the CAG report will be tabled. Every link of corruption will be probed, and whoever has looted will have to return it," he said.
Targeting AAP leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, PM Modi said that those who gave certificates to others are now facing allegations of corruption.
The BJP has also been taking "Sheeshmahal" jibes at Kejriwal. In his speech, PM Modi thanked the people of Delhi for their support and reiterated their relief at making the national capital "AAP-da free."

According to the Election Commission, the voter turnout stood at 60.42% till 11:30 pm.
Now, as more than 60% of voters cast their ballots, some voters might have opted for the None of the Above (NOTA) option, a unique feature in India's electoral system that allows voters to reject all candidates in their constituency.
But what happens if NOTA receives the highest number of votes? Let&rsquo;s dive into that.
<h3>What is NOTA?</h3>
The None of the Above (NOTA) option was introduced in Indian elections in 2013 after a landmark Supreme Court ruling.

Two exit polls, however, predicted a victory for the Aam Admi Party (AAP), and as many showed a close contest between them, with an edge for the BJP.
The Election Commission will announce the official results after the counting of on February 8.&nbsp;
Exit polls are projections made by election survey agencies based on interviews of voters as they come out after casting their votes. These may vary widely from the actual results. In the 2020 Delhi polls, most exit polls got their predictions wrong.&nbsp;
Among the exit polls that predicted a BJP victory, the People's Pulse showed the NDA was likely to get 51 to 60 seats, while the AAP may get 10-19 seats. The Congress, it claimed, will not be able to open its account.
According to People's Insight exit poll, the NDA is likely to get 40 to 44 seats, the AAP 25 to 29 seats, and the Congress 0-1 seat.&nbsp;
The P-Marq exit poll predicted 39-49 seats for the BJP and its allies, 21-31 seats for AAP and 0-1 for the Congress.&nbsp;
The JVC exit poll said the BJP and allies would get 39-45, the AAP 22-31 seats and the Congress 0-2. Similarly, the Poll Diary predicted 42-50 seats of the BJP and allies, while giving the AAP 18-25 seats, 0-2 for the Congress and 0-1 for others.&nbsp;
Chankya Strategies exit poll said the BJP and allies are likely to get 39-44 seats, the AAP is likely to get 25-28, while Congress may get 2-3.&nbsp;
Two surveys predicted AAP's victory - Wee Preside, which gave 46-52 sets for AAP, 18-23 for BJP and 0-1 for Congress, and Mind Brink Media predicted 44-49 seats for AAP, 21-25 for BJP and 0-1 for the Congress.&nbsp;
Matrize exit poll predicted a close contest, giving the BJP led NDA 35-40 seats, while the AAP was said to get 32 to 37 seats. The survey gave Congress 0-1 seats.&nbsp;
The DV Research exit polls predicted 26-34 seats for the AAP, and 36-44 for the BJP and allies, giving zero seats to the Congress.&nbsp;
In the 70 member Delhi assembly, 36 is the majority mark. The AAP currently has 62 MLAs, the BJP has eight, and the Congress none. The Delhi assembly polls were held on Wednesday, and results would be declared on February 8.&nbsp;

According to the ECI, the South West district recorded a turnout of 58.86 per cent, East 58.98 per cent, North 57.24 per cent, North West 58.05 per cent, Shahdara 61.35 per cent, South 55.72 per cent, Southeast 53.77 per cent, Central 55.24 per cent and West 57.42 per cent, as of 5 pm.

Around 1.56 crore voters are set to exercise their electoral franchise in the Delhi Assembly election on February 5 as voter-friendly measures have been put in place for the smooth polling process, Chief Electoral Officer R. Alice Vaz said.
To facilitate voting, 13,766 polling stations have been set up across 2,969 polling premises. Of these, 733 polling stations are designated for persons with disabilities, Vaz said.
Around 1.56 crore voters, including 83.76 lakh men, 72.36 lakh women, and 1,267 individuals from the third gender will cast their ballot on February 5.
The Delhi Election Office has introduced several voter-friendly measures to ensure a smooth polling process. These include ramps, wheelchairs, medical teams, crche services, themed polling stations, a queue management mobile application and a home voting option for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, she said.
Vaz emphasised that over 1 lakh polling personnel have been deployed, and all polling stations will have essential amenities under the Assured Minimum Facility (AMF) policy. These include waiting areas, drinking water, toilets, ramps, and wheelchairs. Paramedical staff with basic medical kits will also be stationed at polling centres.
To enhance voter experience, 210 polling stations will be set up as Theme-Based Model Polling Stations with additional facilities, she said.
Moreover, 70 polling stations -- one in each assembly constituency -- will be fully managed by women staff. Another 70 polling stations will be operated entirely by persons with disabilities to promote inclusivity and an equal number of youth-centric polling stations will be set up to encourage young voters, the CEO said.
The "Vote From Home" initiative will allow 6,488 senior citizens aged 85 and above, along with 1,051 persons with disabilities, to cast their votes from home, ensuring accessibility for all eligible voters, she stated.
"To help voters locate their polling stations, a colour-coded system will be used, with details mentioned on the Voter Information Slip. Additionally, 4,217 wheelchairs will be made available for easy mobility," said Vaz.
Addressing Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violations, Vaz stated that the cVIGIL app has received 5,244 complaints, with the highest number from North District (1,049) and the lowest from Shahdara (136). Authorities have maintained an average response time of 35 minutes.
For the first time in India, a Queue Management System (QMS) application and webpage will enable voters to check real-time crowd levels at polling centres, helping them plan their visit. The app, Delhi Election 2025 QMS, is available on the Google Play Store, she mentioned.
"We are also arranging Dummy/Braille ballot paper, Braille EPIC cards, Braille VAG. 120 nos of SLI are also deployed," Vaz said.
She further shared that to ensure security during polling, 220 companies of forces, 19,000 home guards, and 35,626 Delhi Police personnel will be deployed. Additionally, 21,584 Ballot Units, 20,692 Control Units, and 18,943 VVPATs have been prepared including Dummy/Braille ballot paper, she said.
For voter assistance, 8,715 trained volunteers will be deployed. A pick-and-drop facility can be accessed via the 1950 helpline, mobile app, or Saksham ECI App. Special provisions include Braille ballot papers, EPIC cards, and 120 Sign Language Interpreters, Vaz said.
Vote counting will take place at 19 centres across 11 districts, as approved by the ECI. So far, 6,633 postal ballots have been cast through home voting for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, while 13,958 ballots have been cast by election duty voters, she added.
The Delhi Assembly election is scheduled for February 5, and the results will be announced on February 8.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted six-day custody parole to former AAP councillor and February 2020 riots accused Tahir Hussain, who is contesting on a AIMIM ticket, to campaign for Delhi assembly polls.
Custody parole entails a prisoner being escorted by armed police personnel to the place of visit.
A full bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Karol and Sandeep Mehta allowed Hussain's plea to campaign in police custody from January 29 to February 3.
The court said he would only be allowed to leave jail along with security for 12 hours, according to the jail manual.
The top court said the former councillor could walk out of jail at around 6 am and return by 6 pm.
The bench said Hussain's custody parole would be subject to the deposit of Rs 2.47 lakh per day as part of security expenses, including the police escort.
Hussain, said the court, should not visit his Karawal Nagar home, an alleged site of the riots, while restraining him from making any public comments over the case's merits.
It clarified the order will not be treated as a precedent as it was passed in the "peculiar facts and circumstances" of the case.
The court said Hussain's bail application in the Delhi High Court should be decided on its own merits without being influenced by the bench's order.
Senior advocate Siddharth Aggarwal, appearing for Hussain, argued only four-five days were left to campaign.
Aggarwal said his client was contesting from the Mustafabad seat and he won't visit his house and stay at a hotel aside from sharing the details.
Additional solicitor general S V Raju opposed the plea, saying his role in the riots was serious. If granted the relief, said Raju, everybody would fill nominations in jail.
The court asked Raju to seek instructions on the expenses and security would be required and told Aggarwal to inform the undertakings Hussain proposed to give.
The order was passed on Hussain's plea to allow him to campaign in custody for the upcoming Delhi assembly polls.
The former councillor failed to secure interim bail on January 22, after a two-judge bench of the apex court gave a split verdict.
The Delhi High Court granted custody parole to Hussain on January 14 to file his nomination papers from the Mustafabad constituency.
It , however, declined his plea for interim bail from January 14 to February 9 to contest the February 5 election, saying the gravity of the allegations against Hussain, being the main perpetrator in the violence that resulted in the death of several people, could not be overlooked.
The high court said 11 FIRs were lodged against Hussain in connection with the riots and he was admittedly in custody in a related money-laundering case and a case registered under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Violence broke out in northeast Delhi on February 24, 2020, leaving 53 people dead and several injured.
Hussain is an accused in a case connected to the death of Intelligence Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma.
According to the prosecution, on February 26, 2020, complainant Ravinder Kumar informed the Dayalpur police station that his son Sharma was missing since the previous day.
His body was reportedly found from the Khajuri Khas nullah in the riot-affected area and it bore 51 injuries.
On January 22, an apex court bench comprising Justices Pankaj Mithal and Ahsanuddin Amanullah delivered a split verdict on Hussain's plea.
While Justice Mithal dismissed Hussain's plea saying no case was made out, Justice Amanullah opined that he could be released on interim bail.
The judges asked the top court registry to place the matter before Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna for a new bench to decide the issue.

In a public meeting, Kejriwal declared, "We are issuing Kejriwal's guarantee for the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections. Whatever BJP, Congress, and other parties announce during elections, it's all just election 'Jumla' (gimmick). Today, we are issuing 15 guarantees, 15 Kejriwal guarantees, which will be fulfilled within the next 5 years."
Kejriwal's first guarantee was focused on employment, promising to provide jobs to every unemployed person in Delhi. "The first guarantee is the guarantee of employment.&nbsp;
According to central government data, Delhi has the lowest unemployment rate. Nationally, unemployment is 6 percent, but in Delhi, it's only 2 percent. But even if there is just one unemployed person, that's still an unemployed person. We want that there is no unemployed person in Delhi," he said.

His second guarantee, the Mahila Samman Yojana, promised Rs 2,100 per month to every woman in Delhi. "The second guarantee is the Mahila Samman Yojana, under which every woman in the national capital will receive Rs 2,100 in her bank account every month. We will implement as soon as the government is formed," Kejriwal affirmed.
In his third guarantee, Kejriwal vowed to provide free medical treatment to elderly citizens. "The third guarantee is the Sanjeevani Yojana, where I want to reassure our elderly citizens (60 years and above) that as long as I am alive, I will ensure they receive the best treatment, whether in a government hospital or a private one. The government of Delhi will bear all the expenses," he said.
Kejriwal's fourth guarantee included waiving off old water bills, and he also pledged to improve Delhi's infrastructure. "Under the fourth guarantee, we will ensure correct water consumption bills. After coming to power, old water bills will be waived. I admit we could not clean Yamuna. In the next five years, we will ensure the cleaning of river Yamuna, 24-hour water in households and make roads of Delhi of European standard," he added.
Further expanding on the guarantees, Kejriwal announced the introduction of the Ambedkar Scholarship scheme for Dalit students, ensuring financial assistance for their education abroad. "The sixth guarantee is the introduction of the Ambedkar Scholarship scheme to cover the cost of education, travel and stay of Dalit students wanting to study in any international university," he said.
He also promised free travel for school and college students on buses and a 50% discount on Delhi Metro, along with honorarium payments of Rs 18,000 per month to temple and gurudwara priests. "Seventh guarantee - Free travel on bus and 50% rebate in Delhi Metro for school/college students in Delhi. We will give honorarium amount of Rs 18,000 per month to temple and gurudwara priests," Kejriwal explained.
For auto-rickshaw, taxi, and e-rickshaw drivers, he promised Rs 1 lakh financial assistance for their daughters&rsquo; weddings and free coaching for their children. Kejriwal also pledged life insurance of Rs 10 lakh and medical insurance worth Rs 5 lakh for their families. "Delhi govt will give Rs one lakh for the wedding of daughters of auto-rickshaw, taxi and e-rickshaw drivers. Their children will be given free coaching. We will also give life insurance worth Rs 10 lakh to them and medical insurance worth Rs 5 lakh for their family members," he said.
In his commitment to ensuring safety and security in Delhi, Kejriwal assured that the Delhi government would fund Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to appoint private security guards, in addition to installing more CCTV cameras and street lights. "It was BJP government's responsibility to ensure law and order in Delhi. We have installed CCTV cameras and street lights at various places. Taking this forward, Delhi govt will give funds to RWAs to appoint private security guards," he said.

Explaining the rationale behind the move, Singh remarked that the BJP would not voluntarily talk about their achievements, so AAP decided to showcase it for them.&nbsp;
Taking a swipe at the BJP-led Central government, Singh stated that the book contained everything about the unfulfilled promises made by BJP, including commitments on providing permanent housing, doubling minimum support prices (MSPs) for farmers, strengthening the rupee, and ensuring border security.
&ldquo;Modi ji had made many promises after becoming the Prime Minister. He had said that by 15th August 2022, everyone will get a permanent house, farmers will get MSP, the rupee will be strengthened, the border will be protected... "The BJP has repeatedly said that Kejriwal gives away free handouts, but today the BJP's national president announced that they too will provide free handouts to the people of Delhi," Kejriwal said, challenging the opposition party&rsquo;s stance.&nbsp;
He further added, "I want to tell them that they should acknowledge that Prime Minister Modi was wrong when he said the things that he did about us. They should also accept free handouts are not wrong -- they are a gift from God and good for the country."
Kejriwal stressed that PM Modi should now publicly endorse the BJP's promises and admit that providing free handouts was a good policy. "Modi ji should come forward and assure he consents to these (BJP) promises. He should tell I was right in providing free handouts," he said.
The AAP leader also criticized the BJP for merely promising to implement schemes that AAP had already been offering. He questioned why voters should support the BJP when their manifesto lacked new ideas. "Then why people should vote for them?" Kejriwal asked.
Additionally, Kejriwal accused the BJP of ignoring issues like law and order improvements, labeling their manifesto as "a bundle of lies." He also claimed that the BJP's manifesto proposed the closure of mohalla clinics, a key initiative of the AAP government in Delhi. Kejriwal vowed that AAP would go across the city to ask the people if they wanted these clinics to continue.

In an effort to challenge the Aam Aadmi Party&rsquo;s pre-election promises in Delhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has rolled out an ambitious set of initiatives aimed at benefiting women and families ahead of the February 5 Delhi Assembly elections.
During a press conference, Nadda revealed that the party had gathered about 1.8 lakh feedback responses, held 12,000 meetings, and collected suggestions via 41 LED vans that traveled across Delhi.
Reassuring voters, Nadda pledged that all existing public welfare schemes in Delhi would continue, while accusing the ruling AAP government of widespread corruption.

The BJP's manifesto, 'Sankalp Patra,' proposes financial support for pregnant women, including Rs 21,000 and six nutritional kits. In addition, the party promises Rs 5,000 for the first child and Rs 6,000 for the second child.

He also highlighted that the AAP had promised to give Rs 1,000 to women in 2021, a promise that has not been fulfilled in either Delhi or Punjab.
In an attempt to further criticize AAP's broken promises, Nadda said, "Let me shed some light on AAPda's track record. They promised to give Rs 1,000 per month in 2021. They neither gave it here in Delhi nor in Punjab. In 2024, they promised to give Rs 1,000 per month. As expected, they did not provide it here in Delhi or Punjab. They failed to give subsidy on LPG."
The manifesto also includes a Rs 500 subsidy on LPG cylinders, with the BJP pledging to provide two free cylinders on Diwali and Holi.

Nadda also assured that, should the BJP win, it would implement the Ayushman Bharat health scheme in Delhi during its first cabinet meeting. This follows the AAP government's opposition to the central scheme, claiming that Delhi already has "superior" health services.
The manifesto also includes a health coverage plan for senior citizens, with an additional Rs 5 lakh in health benefits, raising the total coverage to Rs 10 lakh.
The BJP also promises a new pension scheme for senior citizens, offering Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500 per month for those aged 60-70, and Rs 3,000 for those over 70. Additionally, the Divyang and widows will receive a pension of Rs 3,000.
In slum areas, the BJP intends to set up Atal Canteens where residents can access a meal for just Rs 5.

Nadda, who also serves as Union health minister, accused AAP's Mohalla Clinics of being "dens of corruption," citing a reported Rs 300 crore scam. He promised that, should BJP come to power, a full investigation would be conducted, and those involved would be jailed.

The contest is expected to be a three-way battle between the ruling AAP, the BJP, and Congress. Sehrawat said the two councillors were among the founding members of the Aam Aadmi Party and were disillusioned with party national convener Arvind Kejriwal's politics and policies.

"To reduce the financial burden on students, I propose to give 50 percent concession to students in Delhi Metro," the letter read.

Kejriwal also highlighted that the Delhi Metro is a 50:50 joint venture between the Delhi Government and the Central Government, so the expenses for the concession should be equally distributed between both parties. He further pointed out that Delhi's students rely heavily on the Metro for daily commuting to schools and colleges. "I am writing this letter to draw your attention to an important matter concerning the school and college students of Delhi. The students of Delhi depend largely on the Metro to commute to their school or college," the letter read.
Additionally, Kejriwal mentioned that the Delhi government is working on plans to offer free bus travel to students, underscoring their commitment to easing the financial strain on students. "From our side, we are planning to make the bus travel completely free for the students," the letter added.

In his speech, Bidhuri accused Atishi of neglecting public interaction over the past four years, only to become active during the election season. He went on to liken her campaign efforts to a "hirni" (deer) wandering aimlessly.

She has even changed her father. This Marlena became Singh. She changed her name. Arvind Kejriwal swore on his children not to align with the corrupt Congress. Marlena changed her father. AAP has yet to formally respond to the latest remarks, but the party chief Arvind Kejriwal strongly condemned the earlier comments, calling them an insult to women. "BJP leaders have crossed all limits of shamelessness. BJP leaders are abusing Delhi Chief Minister Atishi ji. The people of Delhi will not tolerate the insult of a woman Chief Minister. All the women of Delhi will take revenge for this," Kejriwal stated in a Hindi post.

Yadav also reassured that the INDIA alliance remains intact. He remarked, "The INDIA alliance is intact. I remember when the INDIA alliance was formed, it was decided that wherever a regional party was strong, the alliance would extend support to them."
Meanwhile, D Raja, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India, acknowledged the current disarray within the INDIA alliance post the 2024 general elections. Speaking to ANI, Raja commented, "It is a fact that Opposition is divided. It is known to people that in Delhi, the Assembly election AAP is contesting on its own, Congress is contesting on its own, Left parties are contesting wherever they are capable of putting up a fight and among other parties, certain parties have declared support to AAP. So, it is a fact that INDIA bloc stands divided."
On the other hand, the BJP has been critical of the INDIA alliance's lack of unity and direction. Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused the alliance of being in disarray, stating, "Today the INDIA alliance has completely disintegrated. Mumbai is going to have elections and Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress are preparing to contest alone. Just like you gave us a grand victory in Maharashtra, in the same way, BJP government is going to be formed."
The Delhi assembly elections will be held on February 5, with the counting of votes taking place on February 8. The AAP has already declared candidates for all 70 assembly seats, while the BJP has announced its candidates for 59 seats. The last date for filing nominations is January 17, with scrutiny scheduled for January 18, and withdrawal of candidacies can be done until January 20. Despite having ruled Delhi for 15 years, the Congress has struggled in the past two elections, failing to secure any seats. In contrast, the AAP dominated the 2020 assembly elections, winning 62 out of 70 seats, leaving the BJP with just eight.
