Amid a rise in COVID-19 and H1N1 (swine flu) cases in Uttarakhand, AIIMS Rishikesh Director Meenu Singh has urged people to remain cautious but said there is currently no reason to panic.
Speaking to ANI on Monday, Singh said the hospital had recorded around 20-25 COVID-19 positive patients over the past month.
Two of them developed severe symptoms and required treatment in the ICU.
"Over the past month or so, around 20 to 25 patients tested positive for COVID-19. However, the two patients you are referring to were more severe cases, and both were admitted to the ICU," Singh said.
One of the ICU patients, who had diabetes and pneumonia, responded to treatment and was subsequently discharged.
"The first patient also had diabetes and pneumonia. As we've seen previously, patients with pre-existing conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or other illnesses tend to develop more severe COVID-19 symptoms. This patient was admitted, received treatment, recovered, and has been discharged," she said.
The second patient also had underlying health conditions but could not survive, Singh said.
"However, the second patient admitted to the ICU had underlying health issues as well, and unfortunately, that patient did not survive. So, out of the roughly 30 patients who came in, one passed away, and one required ICU admission. The remaining patients did not face any significant issues," Singh added.
AIIMS Reactivates Screening Facility
With government alerts being issued over seasonal infections and reports of COVID-19 and H1N1 co-infections, AIIMS Rishikesh has stepped up its screening measures.
"Since the government has issued alerts, and we are seeing co-infections of COVID-19 and H1N1 (Swine Flu) in some individuals--which can lead to more severe conditions--we are taking precautions," she said.
The hospital has reactivated its screening OPD, which will assess patients arriving with symptoms such as fever and cough.
"Until now, swine flu testing was not being conducted for all patients. We have now reactivated the screening OPD, just like during the peak of COVID-19. Anyone presenting with a fever or cough will be tested for COVID-19, as well as via viral PCR for Swine Flu," Singh said.
Singh also explained that treatment approaches differ for the two infections.
"Since there is a specific treatment available for Swine Flu--like the medication Oseltamivir (Tamiflu)--we can administer that. For COVID-19, as you know, there isn't a single specific cure, so supportive care is primarily provided," she said.
No Major COVID Resurgence, Says AIIMS Director
Despite the recent cases, Singh said the situation does not currently point towards a major resurgence of COVID-19.
"At present, there isn't a huge surge in patients, so there is no need to panic about a major pandemic resurgence. We are seeing sporadic, small outbreaks, similar to earlier reports from Odisha and Andhra Pradesh," she said.
She added that the hospital has systems and resources in place to deal with any increase in cases.
"We are fully prepared to handle whatever situation arises. We have the necessary resources, systems, and protocols in place to provide effective treatment," she added.
Singh particularly advised people with underlying health conditions to take extra precautions in crowded places.
"My main message is that there is no need to panic. However, if you are visiting crowded places and have underlying health conditions--such as uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, an organ transplant, or ongoing cancer treatment--it is strongly recommended that you wear a mask," she said.
"Masks offer significant protection, and practising regular handwashing is equally important," Singh added.
She also urged people experiencing symptoms to seek medical care rather than delay treatment.
"If you develop a fever, cough, or worsening symptoms, please visit the hospital. You will be tested, and any necessary treatment or medication will be provided," Singh said.
IMA Issues H1N1 Advisory
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) issued a public health advisory on August 26 regarding the seasonal rise in Influenza A (H1N1) cases during the monsoon.
The IMA advised people against self-medicating with antibiotics or antiviral medicines and recommended seeking immediate medical attention if severe symptoms develop.
According to the advisory, India is witnessing a seasonal increase in H1N1 infections, with metropolitan areas such as Delhi reporting more than 1,770 laboratory-confirmed cases.

In the wake of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah linking heart-related deaths in Hassan district to Covid vaccine, the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday said extensive studies by ICMR and AIIMS have conclusively established no linkages between coronavirus vaccines and sudden deaths.
Siddaramaiah had on Tuesday said "hasty approval and distribution" of the Covid vaccine to the public could also be a reason for these deaths.
He urged everyone to visit the nearest health centre immediately for a check-up if they have symptoms such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, and not to ignore these signs.
The ministry said the matter of sudden unexplained deaths has been investigated through several agencies in the country and these studies have conclusively established that there is no direct link between COVID-19 vaccination and reports of sudden deaths.
Studies by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) affirm that COVID-19 vaccines in India are safe and effective, with extremely rare instances of serious side effects, it said.
Sudden cardiac deaths can result from a wide range of factors, including genetics, lifestyle, pre-existing conditions, and post-Covid complications, the ministry said in a statement.
The ICMR and NCDC have been working together to understand the causes behind sudden unexplained deaths, especially in young adults between the ages of 18 and 45 years.
To explore this, two complementary studies were undertaken using different research approaches -- one based on past data and another involving real-time investigation.
The first study conducted by ICMR's National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) was titled "Factors associated with unexplained sudden deaths among adults aged 18-45 years in India - a multi-centric matched case control study." This study was carried out from May to August 2023 across 47 tertiary care hospitals in 19 states and Union territories, the statement said.
It looked at individuals who appeared to be healthy but died suddenly between October 2021 and March 2023.
The findings have conclusively showed that COVID-19 vaccination does not increase the risk of unexplained sudden deaths in young adults.
The second study titled "Establishing the cause in sudden unexplained deaths in young" is currently being conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi with funding and in collaboration with ICMR.
This is a prospective study aimed at determining the common causes of sudden deaths in young adults. Early analysis of data from the study indicates that heart attacks or myocardial infarction (MI) continue to be the leading cause of sudden death in this age group, the statement said.
Importantly, no major changes in the pattern of causes have been observed when compared with previous years. In majority of the unexplained death cases, genetic mutations have been identified as a possible cause of these deaths. The final results will be shared once the study is complete.
Together, these two studies offer a more comprehensive understanding of sudden unexplained deaths in young adults in India.
It has also been found that COVID-19 vaccination does not appear to increase the risk, whereas, the role of underlying health issues, genetic predisposition and risky lifestyle choices does play a role in unexplained sudden deaths, the statement said.
"Scientific experts have reiterated that statements linking Covid vaccination to sudden deaths are false and misleading, and are not supported by scientific consensus," the statement said.
Speculative claims without conclusive evidence risk undermining public confidence in vaccines, which have played a crucial role in saving millions of lives during the pandemic, it said.
Such unfounded reports and claims could strongly contribute to vaccine hesitancy in the country, thereby adversely impacting public health.
The government remains committed to evidence-based public health research to protect the well-being of its citizens, the statement said.
The Karnataka chief minister had said more than 20 people have died due to heart attacks in the past month alone in just one district of Hassan.
"The government is taking this matter very seriously. To identify the exact cause of these series of deaths and to find solutions, a committee of experts has been formed under the leadership of Dr Ravindranath, Director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, and they have been instructed to submit a study report within 10 days," he said in a post on X.

The CDC has acknowledged the presence of NB.1.8.1 cases in the U.S. but notes that fewer than 20 sequences of the variant have surfaced in their baseline surveillance data, preventing its inclusion in the COVID Data Tracker dashboard. Officials have stated that they continue to monitor all SARS-CoV-2 sequences closely, adding that if the variant's prevalence increases, it will be added to the dashboard.

<h3>Covaxin users report adverse side effects</h3>
According to a report by Times Now, a new study has found that adolescent females and those with a history of allergy are at a higher risk of adverse events of special interest or AESI after receiving Covaxin. They cited a report on SpringerLink, an integrated platform for journals and other materials published by Springer. Springer is the observational research conducted by Banaras Hindu University. They have written in their report that about one-third of the population jabbed with Covaxin has reported AESI.
The Economic Times reported that of 1,024 individuals enrolled, 635 adolescents and 291 adults could be contacted during the year-long follow-up. The study revealed that at least 47.9 per cent of adolscents and 42.6 per cent of adults reported viral upper respiratory tract infections.
<h3>What is AESI?</h3>
According to experts, AESI is a defined condition that occurs in some people following immunization, with the potential to be causally associated with a vaccine product.
AESI include anaphylaxis, myocarditis, and thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome, characterized by blood clots and low levels of platelets.

A new variant of Covid 19 has taken over US. The new variant FLiRT belongs to the Omicron's JN.1 lineage. With new mutations, the variants KP.2 and KP 1.1 are considered to be more infectious than previous Omicron variants. However, the main symptoms remain more or less the same. Until now the KP.2 variant has spread faster than the KP.1.1 variant.
The nickname 'FLiRT" is based on the technical names for their mutations, according to the Infectious Disease Society of America. Here is all you need to know about the latest Covid variant.
<h3>FLiRT variant takes over US, all you need to know</h3>
According to a report by Hindustan Times, FLiRT are the descendants of the JN. 1 variant that came in last December. They carry some fresh mutations that help them spread easily. It has emerged from the Omicron JN.1 lineage and are rapidly spreading across the U.S.
The most prominent FLiRT variant is KP.2 which is accounting for around 25% of new COVID-19 cases as of April 2024. 
Some main symptoms of the new variant are sore throat, cough, fatigue, nasal congestion, runny nose, headache, muscle aches, fever, and potential loss of taste or smell. These symptoms are similar to the Omicron variant.
To be safe from the variant, make sure to continue using a mask, maintain social distancing and take influenza shots. Elderly and the immuno-compromised should be more careful.
While it has not spread in India yet, the potential spread of these variants is a significant concern given the country's high population density.

AstraZeneca has said that its vaccine against COVID-19, which was made under licence in India as Covishield, could cause low platelet counts and formation of blood clots in "very rare" cases.

Parents of a girl who died after taking Covishield, an Indian variant of AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine, have decided to move the Supreme Court against the Serum Institute of India (SII). SII, the Pune-based firm, developed and manufactured Covishield in the country.
This comes days after the vaccine manufacturer AstraZeneca admitted that the vaccine can cause a rare side effect TTS (Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome).
As per an India Today report, the victim, Karunya, died in July 2021 after taking a Covishield shot. &nbsp;However, the national committee set up by the Union government reported that there is insufficient evidence to link the death of the girl to the vaccine.
The case, however, came to the limelight after AstraZeneca, a British-Swedish firm, admitted the side effects of the vaccine in response to a lawsuit in a UK court.
Hindustan Times reported the father of the victim Venugopalan Govindan will move a writ petition to the court seeking compensation and the appointment of an independent medical board to inquire into his daughter's death.
Govindan said that the admission by the AstraZeneca comes too late and after many lives were already lost.&nbsp;
He said "A few months after the vaccine was administered, in March 2021, 15 European countries suspended or age-limited the vaccine after deaths or blood clots cases were reported. AstraZeneca and Serum Institute of India should have stopped vaccine manufacturing."
Govindan has made it his mission to file more cases if sufficient remedies were not taken from the present case. "We will file more cases against the perpetrators who are responsible for the deaths of our children."
On May 1, a plea was filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday seeking constitution of a medical expert panel under the supervision of a retired apex court judge to examine any possible side effects and risk factors of the Covishield vaccine.
It claimed that UK-headquartered pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has said that its vaccine against COVID-19, which was made under licence in India as Covishield, could cause low platelet counts and formation of blood clots in "very rare" cases.
The application, filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, also sought a direction to the Centre to compensate those who are severely disabled or have died because of any side effects of the vaccine administered to them during Covid.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Friday said he has directed health officials to make Covid test mandatory for those with Influenza Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI).
The minister also said that a Covid helpline will be launched tomorrow.
&ldquo;More than 7,000 tests are being done everyday and the COVID Positivity Rate is 3.82 per cent. The positivity rate in the state has not come down yet,&rdquo; the minister said in a statement after a meeting with health department officials here.
Stating that neighbouring Kerala has started seeing a downward trend in Covid cases, he said he has asked officials to keep a close watch on those who are Covid positive.
Rao said he has asked officials to compulsorily carry out Covid screening among those adults showing symptoms of ILI and SARI.
Earlier only one in 20 of these cases were subjected to Covid testing but henceforth private and government hospitals have been instructed to conduct the test on all ILI/SARI patients.
&ldquo;Those with symptoms are being monitored and tested. Those who are in isolation at home have been told to take extra care. It is expected that the trend of decreasing Covid cases may start next week in Karnataka. Technical Advisory Committee met yesterday (Thursday) and gave some guidance. I have instructed the authorities to adopt them (the guidelines),&rdquo; Rao said.&nbsp;

<h3>Is there a cause for panic?</h3>
Dr Venkat Ramesh revealed that there is no need to worry and precautions is the best way to ensure you stay safe. He told us, "As of now, there is really no need to be panicked or alarmed, we need to be cautious and vigilant. But certainly do not need to panic. The month of January will give us some clarity in terms of which direction we are headed. As infectious disease physicians, we have not seen an increase in the number of cases due to covid in our hospitals in case of patients being admitted with covid."
He further added, Another thing I would like to emphasise is that the three doses of vaccine may not provide gove great protection against infection with this new variant but it will definitely protect against serious infection, severe disease, ICU admission, and death. So will past infections also. So in that sense, as a country and society we are well protected."

Almost four years ago we realised the dangers of Covid-19. As we step into 2024, covid's new variant JN.1 has been circulating in India. While the first case was detected in Kerala, More than 100 JN.1 cases have been registered in India (until today) and the numbers are sharply on the rise.&nbsp;
The new variant of Covid-19, the JN.1 variant is a new source of concern amongst Indians. We at Editorji spoke to Dr Venkat Ramesh, Infectious Disease Physician, regarding its characteristics and transmissibility. The doctor also spoke to us about the need of a booster dose and what precuations one should take to avoid getting covid.
<h3>Is a booster dose necessary?</h3>
Speaking to us, Dr Venkat Ramesh revealed that anyone and everyone who is eligible to get a booster dose should definitely get it. He said, "What we as a society need to do, in my opinion, are two things: one is that those who are eligible for the third dose or the booster dose, or the so-called precaution dose for the vaccine and haven't taken it should do so because this is mandated by the ministry of health and welfare of India. Second those people who are in a high-risk group should engage in a covid appropriate behaviour and perhaps to a certain extent all of us. But definitely, those people who are in a high-risk group or more prone to severe covid should mask up, avoid crowded places, avoid areas with poor ventilation, indoor environments and so on."

India has logged 841 new cases of COVID-19, the highest in 227 days, while the number of active cases of the infection have been recorded at 4,309, the health ministry said on Sunday.
Three new fatalities due to Covid- one each from Kerala, Karnataka and Bihar -- have been reported in a span of 24 hours, according to the ministry's data updated at 8 am.
India had recorded 865 new cases on May 19.
The number of daily cases had dropped to double-digits till December 5, but cases have again gone up after emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions.
The daily numbers were in lakhs at the peak of the pandemic, which began in early 2020 and has seen more than 4.5 crore people getting infected and over 5.3 lakh deaths in about four years since then across the country.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease stands at over 4.4 crore with a national recovery rate of 98.81 per cent, according to the ministry's website.
According to the website, 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines have so far been administered in the country.

Delhi reports first case of Covid JN. 1 sub variant

In Delhi, a 28-year-old man, who had comorbidities, died, with Covid not being the primary reason.

Amid a surge in Covid-19 cases in the country, national capital New Delhi has reported first case of sub-variant JN.1.&nbsp; 
Delhi has more than 35 active cases with nine fresh infections being reported on Wednesday, an official said, adding that a 28-year-old man, who had comorbidities, died, with Covid not being the primary reason.
"The man was not from Delhi and was referred to a private hospital recently. He had multiple comorbidities and the Covid finding was incidental. The sample of the man has been sent for genome sequencing and a report is awaited," he added.
The official said multiple samples were sent for genome sequencing, and one of them tested positive for the JN.1 variant.
India recorded 529 fresh COVID-19 cases in a single day, while the country's active infection count stood at 4,093, the health ministry said on Wednesday.
Three new fatalities -- two from Karnataka and one from Gujarat -- were reported in a span of 24 hours, according to the ministry's data updated at 8 am.

Some common symptoms of the new variant of Covid-19 are fever, runny nose, headache, and sore throat. Other symptoms are mild upper respiratory problems, which typically improve within four or five days.&nbsp;
However, there is no need to panic as the symptoms are similar to viral flu, and with precautions you can avoid catching the new variant of Covid-19. According to a doctor who spoke to ANI, there will not be a new wave of Covid-19, "I don't think I would be wise enough to say that the new wave of COVID is coming.
