Directing the officials to complete the traffic census on the state's roads by September 30, the Cabinet Minister said that the data would aid in rationalizing road upgrades and new constructions. Additionally, by gathering information on new construction, widening and other necessary road improvements through the traffic census, road safety can be enhanced, thereby preventing costly loss of lives in accidents.&nbsp;
Earlier today, Public Works Minister S. Harbhajan Singh ETO chaired a joint meeting with officials from the Public Works Department and Punjab Mandi Board to discuss measures for improving the state's roads and bridges. The Cabinet Minister reviewed proposed and ongoing projects under various schemes, with a special focus on link roads. The meeting was attended by Public Works Department Administrative Secretary Mr. Ravi Bhagat, Punjab Mandi Board &nbsp;Secretary Mr. Ramvir, Special Secretary Mrs. Hargunjit Kaur and other senior officials.
The Chief Engineer of Public Works informed that under the PMGSY scheme, tenders are being invited for the construction of 581 km of link roads using FDR (Full Depth Reclamation) technology. Additionally, under the NABARD scheme, work is underway to strengthen and construct new rural roads across the state at a cost of ₹281 crore.&nbsp;
On this occasion, S. Harbhajan Singh E.T.O. also conducted a detailed review of other projects under PRBDB and sought updates on any challenges faced during execution. He instructed the officers to carry out their duties with integrity and high standards.&nbsp;
The Public Works Minister stated that the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is committed to transforming the state's roads into world-class infrastructure to further accelerate Punjab's development.

The Home Ministry announced that Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases with caste enumeration, starting October 2026 in snow-bound areas and March 2027 across the rest of India.

Census exercise with caste enumeration will be carried out with the reference date of October 1, 2026, in snow-bound areas like Ladakh and of March 1, 2027, in the rest of the country, the Home Ministry announced on Wednesday.
It has been decided to conduct Population Census-2027 in two phases along with the enumeration of castes, it said.
"The reference date for Population Census - 2027 will be 00:00 hours of the first day of March 2027.
"For the Union Territory of Ladakh and the non-synchronous snow-bound areas of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir and states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the reference date will be 00.00 hours of the first day of October 2026," the ministry said in a statement.
The notification for the intent of conducting the Population Census with these reference dates will be published in the official gazette "tentatively on 16.06.2025, as per provision of section 3 of Census Act 1948", it said.
The Census of India is conducted under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948 and the Census Rules, 1990.
The last Census was conducted in 2011 in two phases.
Census 2021 was also proposed to be conducted in two phases with phase I during April-September 2020 and the second phase in February 2021.
All preparations for the first phase of the Census to be conducted in 2021 were completed and the fieldwork was scheduled to begin in some States/UTs from April 1, 2020. However, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic across the country, the census work was postponed.
The government recently decided that it will carry our caste enumeration along with the census.

Shimla MP and former state president of BJP Suresh Kashyap on Thursday lashed out at the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, over "claiming" credit for the central government's decision to conduct a caste-based census across the country.
He said, "Rahul Gandhi is claiming credit for something Congress could never deliver in 60 years while being in power." Addressing the media in Shimla, Kashyap said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to conduct a caste-based census is a historic decision aimed at society's welfare.
Criticizing the Congress party, Kashyap cited historical instances and said, "When Jawahar Lal Nehru was the PM, he had written a letter to chief ministers in which he had expressed his opposition to caste-based reservation... Not only this, but Congress had also suppressed the Kaka Kalelkar Commission's report, which recommended measures for backward classes." He further said that when the Mandal Commission was introduced in the 1980s, then PM Indira Gandhi opposed its report. "Rahul Gandhi should also remember his father Rajiv Gandhi's stance on the issue of a caste-based census." Kashyap further said that the UPA government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi had assured to consider a caste-based census in a cabinet meeting, and a group of ministers was also formed, but no such census was carried out.
Only a survey, known as the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SEC), was conducted, which was also riddled with errors, he pointed out.
