Kerala's film industry protests CBFC's title change demand for 'Janaki vs The State of Kerala' over censorship concerns.

Various associations from the Kerala film industry staged a protest on Monday in front of the regional office of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), opposing the board's demand to rename the Suresh Gopi-starrer Janaki vs The State of Kerala.
Producers, directors, actors, and technicians came together for the day-long protest, alleging that the CBFC chairman's (Prasoon Joshi) directive to change the film's title to secure censorship clearance was a serious infringement on freedom of expression and amounted to unnecessary religious censorship.
B Unnikrishnan, director, producer, and General Secretary of the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), told PTI Videos that while the decision to change a film's title rests with the producer, the protest was aimed at the larger issue of censorship and the violation of filmmakers' creative rights.
"They are raising objections based on the use of certain names and are refusing to issue censorship certificates. Cinema transcends religious or caste considerations, and we cannot allow this to continue," he added.
Unnikrishnan said that although the Malayalam film industry is not very large in terms of numbers, it "will not remain silent in the face of such attacks on creative freedom." CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam, who joined the protest in solidarity, said that Suresh Gopi&mdash;who is also a Minister of State in the Central Government&mdash;should reflect on how his government is "stifling freedom of expression".
Indrans, a National Award-winning actor, expressed his concern over the developments.
"I am scared. I do not know what awaits us when we bring out new films. It is frightening," he claimed.
Leading actors, directors, and producers from the Malayalam film fraternity participated in the day-long protest.
The Pravin Narayanan-directed film, also starring Anupama Parameswaran in the lead role, reportedly revolves around the legal battle of an assaulted woman named Janaki against the state.
According to sources, the film was denied screening clearance because &lsquo;Janaki&rsquo;, an alternative name for Goddess Sita, cannot be used for such a character.

The future of Dev Patel's directorial debut Monkey Man continues to hang in balance with the Central Board of Film Certification delaying its release. Reportedly, the film body did not even hold a screening for its advisory panel, further holding horses for Monkey Man's India premiere. Set in India&rsquo;s dystopian version, the revenge drama was released across the USA and Canada on April 5 this year. The film had its premiere at the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) on 11 March and was slated to be released in India on April 19.&nbsp;

According to a report by The Hindu, a source has said that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has &lsquo;thwarted Monkey Man's release without formally banning it&rsquo; by not screening the film for the advisory panel. This happened despite Universal Studios making a few changes in the original cut of the film by &ldquo;clipping scenes which sharply emphasised the nexus between religion and politics.&rdquo; In another major update, the makers have also changed the colour used in the political banners in many scenes in the film from saffron to red.

The Central government took notice of the alleged corruption in the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Friday. Calling the case &lsquo;unfortunate&rsquo;, information and broadcasting ministry said they have deputed senior officials to probe into the corruption issue.&nbsp;
It mentioned, &ldquo;The Government has zero tolerance for corruption and strictest action will be taken against anyone found involved,&rdquo; wrote the ministry.&nbsp;
The ministry added, &ldquo;A senior officer from the Ministry of Information &amp; Broadcasting has been deputed to Mumbai to conduct an inquiry today itself.&rdquo;&nbsp;

He requested Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to look into the matter, he wrote, &ldquo;Doing this is not for me but for future producers. NOT HAPPENING. My hard earned money gone for corruption ??? No way. Evidence down for all to hear. Hope truth prevails as always. GB," Vishal added.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Is the censor board relevant in a digital world? | The Issue 

It’s an iconic scene from the cult classic – Thakur is stopped from pummelling Gabbar to death so law can take its course. But did you know, that’s not how Sholay was to end? Gabbar was supposed to be killed but an Emergency Era censor board developed cold feet at the thought of a cop taking law into his own hands, and the movie ended on a different note.  

Much like other laws in our country, the censor board can also be called a colonial inheritance. Under the British rule, in 1920 censor boards were set up in erstwhile Bombay, Madras, Calcutta and Rangoon. The boards were set up to judge the appropriateness of films and laid out 43 objectionable subjects. These included scenes that made light of the British Empire, gruesome murders and strangulation scenes, unnecessary exhibition of feminine underclothing etc. At the time, the main preoccupation of the censors was content bolstered Anti-British, nationalist sentiments.

The ouster of the British from India led to significant changes in the censorship landscape. After decades of going back and forth on it – certification of films was brought under one governing body: the CBFC. This was also the decade that saw the disappearance of the kiss from Indian cinema— not because of change in censor rules, but because of a societal shift towards moral caution and “Indian" values.   

The 1952 Cinematograph Act sets out the structure of censorship as it stands today: the chairperson at the top, then the board members, then the advisory panels. Everyone, from the chairperson down to the advisory panel members, is a government appointee.  And governments have for decades been accused of using this body to their own benefit.  

Perhaps one of the most intriguing stories in this regard would be that of Sanjay Gandhi and indie film Kissa Kursi Ka. The film was a political satire on the government of Indira Gandhi, made at the height of the Emergency. Not only was the film banned from release, Sanjay Gandhi and his aides burnt every single copy of the film. When the Shah commission was investigating cases of atrocities during the Emergency, Gandhi was jailed for a month, for this crime. Of everything Gandhi was accused of – it’s very interesting to note that this was the crime that sent him behind bars.

Critics of the censor board have said time and time again that the main problem with the body is the vague wording of the guidelines that give the board unrestrained powers. Some of the guidelines include human sensibilities are not offended by vulgarity, obscenity or depravity, the security of the State is not jeopardized, or endangered, public order is not endangered. The board in its objective also says that films must remain responsible and sensitive to the values and standards of society. But in a society as pluralistic as ours, where social change takes place at the speed of light owing to digital media and faster modes of communication – it does become difficult to pinpoint exactly what the ‘values and standards of society’ are.  

It cannot be denied that films in India make big bucks – the longer the cues for tickets, the happier film producers will be when cashing in their cheques. The CBFC in such a situation becomes important from a commercial aspect – and therefore even filmmakers and the industry should ideally have an appellate body that they can air their grievances against. And India did have this body – the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal. However, claiming that the tribunal was not functioning well, the Centre in April 2021 abolished the FCAT: much to the disappointment of many filmmakers.

Physical protests have been to some degree replaced by calls for boycott on Twitter and taking stock of public sentiment is becoming tougher with every passing day. After CBFC had directed ‘Pathaan’ makers to implement 'changes' in film, former CBFC Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani has now reacted on the matter.

After CBFC had&nbsp;directed &lsquo;Pathaan&rsquo; makers to implement 'changes' in film, former CBFC Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani has now reacted on the matter.

Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone&rsquo;s forthcoming film &lsquo;Pathaan&rsquo; has been embroiled in a controversy ever since the release of its song &lsquo;Besharam Rang&rsquo;. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Thursday directed the makers to implement 'changes' in the film, including its songs.
Now, former CBFC Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani has reacted on the matter. He said that &lsquo;Pathaan&rsquo; was 'a victim of controversy' and CBFC must have taken the decision under pressure from the ministry.
In recent interview with ETimes, Pahlaj recalled that Sanjay Leela Bhansali&rsquo;s &lsquo;Padmaavat&rsquo; and Salman Khan's &lsquo;Bajrangi Bhaijaan&rsquo; too faced boycott calls ahead of their release. He also talked about the CBFC getting a letter from the ministry ahead of film&rsquo;s release due to &lsquo;law-and-order situation.&rsquo;
Pahlaj told ETimes, &lsquo;There&rsquo;s no guideline that states that a colour can be cut. You can suggest changes if there&rsquo;s vulgarity or obscenity. He added, &lsquo;It is the committee&rsquo;s right to decide what cuts and modifications are needed. They will have to see the revised version. Prasoon Joshi might have given a statement but he has no right to watch Pathaan with the examining committee. He must have got pressure from the ministry to see the film carefully because of saffron colour. If they suggest a cut because of colour then it would be a wrong proceeding.&rsquo;

It faced major backlash as there were some people who found the song objectionable over the use of saffron and green costumes, and its dance moves. Now, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has asked makers of &lsquo;Pathaan&rsquo; to implement changes in the film, including in its songs.
In a statement, CBFC chairperson, Prasoon Joshi said, &lsquo;Pathaan went through the due and through examining process as per the CBFC guidelines. The committee has guided the makers to implement the advised changes in the film including the songs and submit the revised version prior to theatrical release.&rsquo;
Joshi added that &lsquo;CBFC is always committed to find the right balance between creative expression and sensibility of the audience and believe that we can always find solution through meaningful dialogue between all stakeholders. Whilst the process is getting duly followed and implemented I must reiterate that our culture and faith is glorious, intricate and nuanced. And we have to be careful that it does not get defined by trivia which takes the focus away from the real and the true. And like I have said earlier as well, that the trust between creators and audience is most important to protect and the creators should keep working towards it.&rsquo;

After these cuts were carried out, the final duration of RRR for both versions now stands at 3 hours, 1 minute and 53 seconds, that is, 181.53 minutes.
The period drama is slated to release in theatres on March 25.

SS&nbsp;Rajamouli&rsquo;s magnum opus '<a href="https://www.editorji.com/entertainment-news/south/watch-rrr-star-ram-charan-on-the-billboards-of-times-square-in-new-york-1647598297141" target="_blank">RRR</a>' is gearing up for its release. The film features a star-studded line-up including Ram Charan, Jr. NTR., Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, and Olivia Morris.
 According to Bollywood Hungama, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has ordered the removal of abusive words from the Telugu version. The word &lsquo;Indian&rsquo; was also removed from another dialogue as it was used in a particular context to which the CBFC had objected. Meanwhile, the Hindi version of the film has received no such audio cuts.

 Besides these cuts, the makers also voluntarily made a few cuts probably to reduce the duration of the film for a better impact, reports the news portal.
 When CBFC granted the Censor certificate to 'RRR', the duration of both the versions (Telugu and Hindi) was 186 minutes and 54 seconds, that is, 3 hours, 6 minutes, and 54 seconds.
After these cuts, the final duration of RRR now stands at 3 hours, 1 minute, and 53 seconds, that is 181.53 minutes.
The period drama is slated to release in theatres on March 25.
