Climate change: restoring natural landscape could help fight it

A new study published in the journal Nature states that restoring natural landscapes could help fight climate change.
The study states that boosting dwindling wildlife populations could be the most effective and cheapest way of dealing with the climate crisis.&nbsp;
Ecological restoration of identified areas that have been converted into farmlands and grazing areas which threatens the survival of certain species, could help.&nbsp;
The study further adds that protecting even 30% of the priority areas identified by researchers could help soak up about 465 billion tons of carbon dioxide and save a majority of the birds, mammals and amphibians.&nbsp;

Another disastrous factor contributing to the ecosystem's collapse is ocean acidification. A recent study suggests that ocean acidification might have a serious impact on millions of people globally who are dependent on coastal protection, fisheries, and aquaculture. Ocean acidification refers to a significant change in the chemical balance of the ocean and occurs when carbon dioxide is absorbed by the ocean to produce acid.
Scientists have said that only significant cuts in fossil fuel emissions will prevent the changes which are already evident in certain areas with projected future carbon dioxide levels becoming more widespread. The study was published in the Journal of Emerging Topics in Life Sciences. 

International Energy Agency (IEA) has confirmed this Tuesday that CO2 emissions have risen to a record high last year. The reason for this can be attributed to increasing in countries' energy demands.

The report also puts forward that three countries including United States, China and India have accounted for 75% of the increase.

The news worries even more as IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) had confirmed just last year that that at the current rate of emissions, the average global temperature increase over pre-industrial levels would breach the 2°C target. Climate change at this level is expected to lead to “devastating consequences”.

Energy-related carbon dioxide emissions have gone up in 2018 with a pace fastest since 2013, rising by 1.7% to 33.1 billion tonnes.
