<p>Tagore made an appearance on the red carpet in a classy green saree along with her daughter and jewellery designer Saba Pataudi, who opted for an all-yellow ethnic ensemble.</p>

<p>Veteran actors Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal relived their memories of working on Satyajit Ray&rsquo;s 1970 classic "Aranyer Din Ratri", now immortalised through a 4K restoration that was screened at the Cannes Film Festival.</p>
<p>The 4K restored version of the Bengali-language film, based on author Sunil Gangopadhyay's novel of the same name, was showcased at the 78th edition of the prestigious gala under the Cannes Classics section on Monday evening.</p>
<p>Tagore made an appearance on the red carpet in a classy green saree along with her daughter and jewellery designer Saba Pataudi, who opted for an all-yellow ethnic ensemble.</p>
<p>Pataudi shared multiple photos from her Cannes on Instagram and wrote, "Let the party begin....! Moments before the Red carpet .... scene... #Cannes #2025." Garewal was dressed in a gown by Indian couture label Karleo in her signature white colour. She later shared photos from the red carpet on her Instagram Stories.</p>
<p>They were joined on the red carpet by the film's gala presenter and Hollywood filmmaker Wes Anderson, a long-time admirer of Ray who spearheaded its six-year restoration.</p>
<p>The restored version of "Aranyer Din Ratri", titled "Days and Nights in the Forest" in English, is presented and restored by Martin Scrosese's The Film Foundation through its World Cinema Project initiative at L&rsquo;Immagine Ritrovata in collaboration with Shivendra Singh Dungarpur's Film Heritage Foundation, Janus Films, and the Criterion Collection.</p>
<p>Anderson, known for movies such as "The Royal Tenenbaums", "The Darjeeling Limited", "Fantastic Mr. Fox", "Moonrise Kingdom", "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "The French Dispatch", introduced the movie ahead of its screening.</p>
<p>According to videos circulating on social media from the screening, Tagore said she was excited to watch the movie once again.</p>
<p>"All those people became very close friends. I'm really looking forward to seeing the film and seeing them on the screen because sadly, most of them... actually Simi and I are the only survivors. Everybody else has passed on. So I will see my old friends on the screen and relive those lovely moments," she said.</p>
<p>Garewal thanked Anderson, Scorsese and Dungarpur for their work towards preserving old classics and ensuring that they are not "forgotten".</p>
<p>"The young generation will get the opportunity to experience and appreciate great cinema. Gentleman, you have not only restored Ray's masterpiece, you have made it immortal," she added.</p>
<p>"Aranyer Din Ratri", which explores themes of alienation, class, and modernity, follows the story of four city-bred men who escape to the forests of Palamau (now in Jharkhand) for a carefree holiday, only to undergo a journey of self-discovery.</p>
<p>In the film, Tagore plays Aparna, a cool and elegant city woman, whereas Garewal essays the role of a tribal Santhal girl named Duli. It also featured Soumitra Chatterjee, Subhendu Chatterjee, Samit Bhanja, Robi Ghosh, and Aparna Sen.</p>
<p>In an earlier statement, Anderson had praised "Aranyer Din Ratri" as a "special gem" and compared Ray's work as a filmmaker with American movie legend John Cassavetes.</p>
<p>"Anything signed by Satyajit Ray must be cherished and preserved; but the nearly-forgotten 'Days and Nights in the Forest' is a special/particular gem... Made in 1970. Modern and novelistic...</p>
<p>A clash/negotiation between castes and sexes. Urbans and rurals. Selfish men and their hopes and cruelties and spectacular lack of wisdom. Women who see through them. The great Soumitra Chatterjee: lost but searching. The great Sharmila Tagore: mysterious, cerebral, mesmerizing. From the master, another masterpiece," the filmmaker said.</p>
<p>Also part of the screening were producer Purnima Dutta and Margaret Bodde, executive director of The Film Foundation.</p>
<p>Last year, a 4K restored version of Shyam Benegal's "Manthan" (1976) was screened in the same section at Cannes.</p>
<p>Aribam Syam Sharma's Manipuri film "Ishanou" (1990) and 1978 Malayalam movie "Thamp" by G Aravindan were showcased under Cannes Classics in 2023 and 2022, respectively.</p>

<p>Actor Ishaan Khatter says he has been an admirer of Neeraj Ghaywan since he saw "Masaan" a decade ago and it feels special to finally collaborate with the director on his second film "Homebound", which will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.</p>
<p>Ghaywan's film will premiere in the Uncertain Regard category at Cannes in May this year. The filmmaker's much-acclaimed 2015 debut feature film "Masaan" was also selected in the same category Khatter, who stars in the movie alongside Janhvi Kapoor and Vishal Jethwa, said working on the movie has been one of the most "special experiences" of his career.</p>
<p>"It is my first time on the Cannes red carpet and, as I prayed, with my own film," the actor told PTI in an interview.</p>
<p>"No praise is enough for the kind of leader and the kind of man that Neeraj is, and inevitably, the kind of filmmaker that he is. He's very, very special. He has a spine that not many people can boast of," he added.</p>
<p>Khatter said he has always been a fan of Ghaywan's work and wanted to work with him since he first saw "Masaan" in a theatre 10 years ago.</p>
<p>"So it was a very beautiful full circle moment for me, just to be able to work with him," he added.</p>
<p>When he met Ghaywan for the first time for "Homebound", Khatter said he made a promise to the filmmaker. "I shared that I'm 100% committed if I'm there and I will give you my all if I feel connected to the film and the script. I won't be disingenuous about it, and just because I want to work with you, jump into it," Khatter, who will next be seen in Netflix's romantic series "The Royals", said.</p>
<p>Also known for his roles in "Dhadak" and Hollywood drama "The Perfect Couple", Khatter said when he read the script, he realised that one rarely gets to see such films.</p>
<p>"I think it's Ghaywan's second Cannes selection. He has just made two films and they both were selected for Cannes so it's a testament to the fact that he's a very high caliber filmmaker. But he's a humanist at heart, and that's why his films are so special," Khatter added.</p>
<p>The Un Certain Regard segment recognises the first and second films of promising filmmakers.</p>
<p>Cinephiles in India are looking forward to the Cannes premiere of "Homebound", which comes a year after Payal Kapadia's "All We Imagine As Light" became the first Indian film to win the Grand Prix, the second most prestigious prize in Cannes Competition section.</p>

<p>Chidananda S Naik's &lsquo;Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know&rsquo; won the first prize of La Cinef for best short at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 23, marking a significant victory for India. This is India's second win in five years at La Cinef, with Ashmita Guha Neogi, also from FTII, having won the award for her film &lsquo;CatDog&rsquo; in 2020.</p>
<p>Speaking with Variety, Chidananda said, &lsquo;We had only four days. I was basically told not to make this film. It&rsquo;s based on folklore from Karnataka [in India]. These are the stories we grew up with, so I was carrying this idea since my childhood.&rsquo;</p>
<p>The third prize in the La Cinef competition was awarded to Mansi Maheshwari's animation film &lsquo;Bunnyhood.&rsquo; Mansi, born in Meerut and a former student of NIFT Delhi, created the film as a student at the UK's National Film and Television School. The third prize includes a 7,500 euro grant.</p>
<p>The second prize was shared between &lsquo;Out of the Widow Through the Wall,&rsquo; directed by Asya Segalovich from Columbia University, and &lsquo;The Chaos She Left Behind,&rsquo; made by Nikos Kolioukos from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. The second prize winners received an 11,250 euro grant. The awarded films will be screened at the Cinema du Pantheon on June 3 and at the MK2 Quai de Seine on June 4.</p>

The film, based on a Kannada folk tale, tells the story of an old woman who steals a rooster, causing her village to fall into perpetual darkness. The Cannes Film Festival awarded the first prize winner a 15,000 euro grant.</p>
<p>The 16-minute short fiction film premiered at the festival on May 21. &lsquo;Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know&rsquo; was one of 18 titles evaluated by a five-member jury chaired by Belgian actress Lubna Azabal.</p>

I'm overwhelmed with joy and gratitude for the love and support from all of you. This is a dream come true, and I hope my creation dazzles you as much as your support has inspired me. <p>Award-winning Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulf was sentenced to eight years in jail after he refused to withdraw his film, 'The Seed of the Sacred Fig', from the upcoming edition of the renowned Cannes International Film Festival. The filmmaker, speaking to Deadline, has now revealed that he has fled from his home country. He was previously banned by Tehran from attending the film festival.&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>'I had to choose between prison and leaving Iran'&nbsp;</strong></h3>
<p>The Iranian filmmaker's statement read, "I arrived in Europe a few days ago after a long and complicated journey. About a month ago, my lawyers informed me that my eight-year prison sentence was confirmed in the court of appeal and would be implemented on short notice. Knowing that the news of my new film would be revealed very soon, I knew that without a doubt, a new sentence would be added to these eight years. I didn&rsquo;t have much time to make a decision. I had to choose between prison and leaving Iran. With a heavy heart, I chose exile. The Islamic Republic confiscated my passport in September 2017. Therefore, I had to leave Iran secretly."</p>
<p>Mohammad also highlighted how civil rights advocates and individuals who speak out against the establishment are targeted by the government. He concluded his statement by imploring the global film community to embrace free expression. He also voiced his concern for the health and safety of the people who assisted him in creating 'The Seed of the Sacred Fig'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an Instagram post, the filmmaker mentioned that he was in a 'safe place' after people 'risked their lives' to help him cross borders. &nbsp;"I am grateful to my friends, acquaintances, and people who kindly, selflessly, and sometimes by risking their lives, helped me get out of the border and reach safety after a difficult and long journey," he wrote in his post on Monday.</p>
<p>'The Seed of the Fig' is to be premiered at the Cannes Festival, which opens on Tuesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The festival&rsquo;s website shared Ruben Ostlund&rsquo;s statement that read, &lsquo;I am happy, proud, and humbled to be trusted with the honour of jury president for this year&rsquo;s Competition at the Festival de Cannes&rsquo;.</p>

<p>Swedish filmmaker and two-time Palme d&rsquo;Or winner Ruben Ostlund has been appointed as the jury president for the 76th edition of Cannes Film Festival that is all set to take place in May. Ostlund will head the jury exactly 50 years after fellow citizen, actor Ingrid Bergman, served in the role.</p>
<p>The festival&rsquo;s website shared a statement of the filmmaker that read, &lsquo;I am happy, proud, and humbled to be trusted with the honour of jury president for this year&rsquo;s Competition at the Festival de Cannes. Nowhere in the film world is the anticipation as strong as when the curtain rises on the films in Competition at the festival.</p>
<p>&lsquo;It is a privilege to be part of it, together with the Cannes audience of connoisseurs. I am sincere when I say that cinema culture is in its most important period ever. The cinema has a unique aspect &ndash; there, we watch together, and it demands more on what is shown and increases the intensity of the experience. It makes us reflect in a different way than when we dopamine scroll in front of individual screens,&rsquo; he added.</p>
<p>Ostlund has had world premieres of five of his six features at the movie gala. He won the Palme d&rsquo;Or for &lsquo;The Square&rsquo; and &lsquo;Triangle of Sadness&rsquo;, in 2017 and 2022 respectively.<br>&lsquo;Triangle of Sadness&rsquo; is nominated in the Best Picture, Original Screenplay and Best Director categories in this year&rsquo;s Academy Awards.</p>
<p>The festival&rsquo;s Official Selection will be announced in April.</p>
