Dr Karan Raj shared a reel on Instagram explaining that toasting white bread can lower its Glycemic Index which means it's broken down more slowly, causing a more gradual rise in blood sugar levels.
The doctor also mentioned that if you, freeze a slice of white bread before toasting it, its glycemic index may get reduced by almost double. This process can potentially help mitigate the blood sugar spikes associated with consuming white bread.
&ldquo;This all happens because more retrograded starch is formed, and retrograded starch is a type of resistant starch which is beneficial for your gut health because it acts more like a fiber,&rdquo; Raj said.&nbsp;
The Glycemic Index (GI) is a measure used to determine how much a food can affect your blood sugar levels, described Healthline.
Foods such as white bread, white rice, and potatoes, which have a high glycemic index, lead to unhealthy spikes in blood sugar levels.&nbsp;

Bread is a common breakfast staple for most people. While some prefer it toasted, others consume it raw. But, is it safe to consume bread raw and does roasting change its nutritional value? Let's find out!
Well, according to Nutritionist, Julie Mancuso, toasting does have an effect, but not on the calorie count. It doesn't change its nutritional value or affect carbohydrates or gluten but it may lower the glycemic index of bread, which is an advantage.
The expert also suggested that one should avoid consuming over-toasted or burnt bread. "Don't toast it to a dark brown color, instead, toast it lightly. Over-toasted bread contains a chemical called acrylamide." As per previous studies, toasted bread is also good for diabetics as it has a lower glycemic index.
However, it's important to consume bread by checking the ingredients. Make sure it has less maida and no palm oil and preservatives.
Experts also suggest that raw bread if consumed in empty stomach may cause acidity and bloating. So, it is better to toast it a bit before eating.

Nutritionist Revant Himatsingka recently took to Twitter and revealed how bread which is the most common breakfast option in India is also the unhealthiest one.
Himatsingka said, "There are two types of bread in India. One which is openly unhealthy (white bread), and the second type (brown, multigrain, wholewheat) which pretend to be healthy when they are not!"
In his video, he revealed that bread be it white, brown, multigrain and even whole wheat is equally harmful to health.&nbsp;
While white bread is filled with maida, brown bread in India contains a caramel colour 150A that is also found in products like Coke and Bourn Vita. For those who consume whole wheat bread, maida is the main ingredient and whole wheat is only 20 per cent. Speaking of multigrain bread, it also contains high amounts of maida instead of grains.&nbsp;
<h3>3 better alternatives</h3>
So, instead of consuming bread, the Nutritionist recommends three alternatives. You can bake your own bread, opt for homemade roti and most importantly read the ingredients before buying bread and choose the ones which are without maida, palm oil and preservatives for example, The Baker's Dozen bread. Following it Naan has been ranked fourth, Parantha is 8th, Amritsari Kulcha is 14th, Roti is 16th, Aloo Parantha is 29th, Rumali Roti is 34th, Aloo Naan is 46th and Kashmiri Naan is 47th. In this list of 50 flatbreads, 9 breads are from India.
The number one spot has been grabbed by Malaysia's Roti Canai and the last one goes to Spain's Coca.
