Expert shares a simple hack to make your white bread healthier, here's how to do it

If you love eating white bread but your dietitian recommends cutting it off from your diet due to its additives that cause blood sugar to spike high, you can try this genius hack to make it healthier.

Dr Karan Raj shared a reel on Instagram explaining that toasting white bread can lower its Glycemic Index which means it's broken down more slowly, causing a more gradual rise in blood sugar levels.

The doctor also mentioned that if you, freeze a slice of white bread before toasting it, its glycemic index may get reduced by almost double. This process can potentially help mitigate the blood sugar spikes associated with consuming white bread.

“This all happens because more retrograded starch is formed, and retrograded starch is a type of resistant starch which is beneficial for your gut health because it acts more like a fiber,” Raj said.

The Glycemic Index (GI) is a measure used to determine how much a food can affect your blood sugar levels, described Healthline.

Foods such as white bread, white rice, and potatoes, which have a high glycemic index, lead to unhealthy spikes in blood sugar levels.

Benefits of eating bread

Easily Digestible: Some individuals with digestive issues or sensitive stomachs may find white bread easier to digest compared to whole grain varieties.

Source of Energy: White bread provides carbohydrates, which serve as a quick source of energy for the body.

Low in Fat: White bread typically contains minimal amounts of fat, making it a suitable choice for those watching their fat intake.

Affordability: White bread is often more affordable than whole grain options, making it accessible to a wider range of consumers.
