Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the &lsquo;Kalachakra Empowerment&rsquo; ceremony, along with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck at the ongoing Global Peace Prayer Festival in Bhutan.
&ldquo;Had the honour of inaugurating Kalachakra &lsquo;Wheel of Time&rsquo; Empowerment with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan and His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo,&rdquo; Modi said in a post on social media.
&ldquo;It was presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo which made it even more special,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;This is an important ritual with great cultural significance for Buddhists around the world. The Kalachakra Empowerment is a part of the ongoing Global Peace Prayer Festival which has brought together devotees and scholars of Buddhism to Bhutan,&rdquo; he added.
Earlier in the day, Modi met with Bhutan&rsquo;s former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck and said he appreciated his extensive efforts over the years towards further cementing ties between the two South Asian neighbours.
&ldquo;Had a wonderful meeting with His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. Appreciated his extensive efforts over the years towards further cementing India-Bhutan ties,&rdquo; Modi said in a social media post.
During the meeting, they discussed cooperation in energy, trade, technology and connectivity.
&ldquo;Lauded the progress in the Gelephu Mindfulness City Project, which aligns with our Act East Policy,&rdquo; Modi added.
Modi also thanked &ldquo;His Majesty for his wise counsel and guidance in further enhancing the special India-Bhutan friendship&rdquo;, the Ministry of External Affairs said. The prime minister conveyed best wishes of the government and people of India for the former king&rsquo;s continued good health, well-being and a long life, the ministry added.
Modi, who is on a two-day visit to the Himalayan country, on Tuesday addressed an event at Changlimethang Stadium to mark the 70th birth anniversary of Bhutan's fourth &lsquo;Druk Gyalpo&rsquo; Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
Modi said India and Bhutan have shared a deep spiritual and cultural bond for centuries and it was his commitment to participate in this "important occasion".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Bhutan for a two-day visit, where he will meet King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, inaugurate Punatsangchhu-II hydro project, and attend the 70th birthday celebrations of the fourth king.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bhutan on Tuesday for a two-day visit during which he will join the 70th birthday celebrations of the fourth king of the Himalayan nation, Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
He was received at the Paro airport by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. "I join the entire nation in welcoming my elder brother Prime Minister @narendramodi to Bhutan," Tobgay said in an X post.
During the visit, Modi will hold talks with Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck and Prime Minister Tobgay. Modi and King Wangchuck will jointly inaugurate the 1020-megawatt Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project developed jointly by India and Bhutan.
Modi will also meet the fourth king and attend celebrations marking the 70th birthday of the former king of Bhutan. In a statement before embarking on the visit, the prime minister said, "I am confident that my visit will further deepen our bonds of friendship and strengthen our efforts towards shared progress and prosperity".
"It would be my honour to join the people of Bhutan as they mark the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth King," he said.
India and Bhutan enjoy exemplary ties of friendship and cooperation, rooted in deep mutual trust, understanding, and goodwill, he said. "Our partnership is a key pillar of our Neighbourhood First Policy and a model for exemplary friendly relations between neighbouring countries," Modi said.
In an X post, the prime minister said the visit will "add new vigour to our bilateral relations". "The visit seeks to strengthen the special ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Saturday.
Modi's visit also coincides with the exposition of the sacred Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha, which have been sent to Bhutan from India.

The King, who arrived at the airport wearing a formal Gho (the traditional Bhutanese dress for men) and Kera (a belt), was welcomed with an orange stole by Adityanath.
Later, King Wangchuck was seen wearing a saffron-colored kurta and pyjama as he took the holy dip in the Triveni Sangam. Alongside the King and Chief Minister Adityanath were Uttar Pradesh ministers Swatantra Dev Singh and Nand Gopal Gupta, along with newly-appointed Mahamandaleshwar Santosh Das ji Maharaj (Satua Baba). This event was captured in pictures shared by the state government.

King Wangchuck, who arrived in Lucknow on Monday, was greeted with cultural performances by local artistes. He then visited Raj Bhavan, where he was hosted by Governor Anandiben Patel.&nbsp;
During this visit, he paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi's statue. The King, the Governor, and the Chief Minister had detailed discussions about India-Bhutan relations. The state government expressed that the visit would strengthen the cultural ties and friendship between India and Bhutan.
In December 2024 and March 2024, King Wangchuck and Queen of Bhutan had previously visited Delhi. Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded Bhutan's highest civilian honor, the 'Order of Druk Gyalpo'.
By 12 noon on Tuesday, more than 54 lakh devotees had taken part in the Maha Kumbh, with the total number of devotees who have participated since January 13 reaching over 37.5 crore. The Maha Kumbh will conclude on February 26.

Bhutan has conferred renowned Indian educationist Arun Kapur, who set up schools in India, Bhutan and Oman, with the &lsquo;Bura Marp&rsquo; (red scarf) and &lsquo;Patang&rsquo; (ceremonial sword).
Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel conferred the Red Scarf and the title &lsquo;Dasho&rsquo; upon Kapur, who is currently the director at The Druk Gyalpo&rsquo;s Institute, according to people aware of the matter.
The honour, which was conferred at the 117th Bhutanese National Day celebrations in Thimphu&rsquo;s Changlimithang stadium, is rarely given to non-Bhutanese residents and comes with the honorific &lsquo;Dasho&rsquo; title, otherwise used for senior officials.
Kapur was previously awarded the &lsquo;Druk Thuksey&rsquo; in 2019 for his work in setting up The Royal Academy school, and in developing the Bhutan Baccalaureate educational system.
He headed Delhi&rsquo;s renowned Vasant Valley School for 29 years until April 2020.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday received Bhutan&rsquo;s highest civilian award, the &lsquo;Order of the Druk Gyalpo,&rsquo; making him the first foreign Head of the Government to receive the honour.
The award has been conferred to Prime Minister Modi in recognition of &ldquo;his outstanding contribution to the growth of India-Bhutan relations and for his distinguished service to the Bhutanese nation and people.&rdquo;
"Honoured to be conferred with 'Order of the Druk Gyalpo' Award by Bhutan. I dedicate it to 140 crore Indians," Modi posted on X soon after.
King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck first made the announcement about the award during the 114th National Day celebrations on December 17, 2021. On Friday, Prime Minister Modi received it during his two-day state visit, his third since he took over as the prime minister in 2014.
A statement from the Indian Embassy in 2021, when the announcement was made, said, &ldquo;As per ranking and precedence established, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo was instituted as the decoration for lifetime achievement and is the pinnacle of the honor system in Bhutan, taking precedence over all orders, decorations and medals.&rdquo; In 2020, Modi received the &lsquo;Legion of Merit by the US Government&rsquo; award of the US Armed Forces and in 2019, Russia conferred its highest civilian honour &lsquo;The order of St. Andrew&rsquo; award on Modi.

Before Covid, Bhutan required tourists to book their travel through registered tour operators and had to spend a minimum amount, including $65 dollars tourism tax, daily during their stay. 
While the requirement of a package tour is no longer necessary, tourists have to pay $200 daily as tourism tax in addition to hotel and food charges. 
Visitors from India were not required to pay a tourism tax before Covid-19 but now Indian travellers will be required to pay a  daily levy of Rs 1200. 
The Bhutan govt has said that the Sustainable Development Fee will ensure that their economy recovers from the Covid-19 setback and that they are also able to make tourism sustainable. 
Bhutan is one of the very few carbon-neutral countries in the world.

"Another solid achievement by the BJP government. Even Pakistan and Afghanistan handled Covid better than India," Gandhi tweeted with the chart.
The former Congress chief on Wednesday had also taken a dig at the government over IMF growth projections showing Bangladesh closing in on India in terms of per capita GDP this year and described it as a "solid achievement" of six years of BJP's "hate-filled cultural nationalism".
The Indian economy, severely hit by the coronavirus pandemic, is projected to contract by a massive 10.3 per cent this year, the International Monetary Fund had said on Tuesday.
However, India is likely to bounce back with an impressive 8.8 per cent growth rate in 2021, thus regaining the position of the fastest growing emerging economy, surpassing China's projected growth rate of 8.2 per cent, the IMF said in its latest 'World Economic Outlook' report.
