Security was tightened in Bareilly with heavy police deployment, internet curbs, and clerics urging peace ahead of Friday prayers, a week after clashes.

Security was strengthened in several sensitive areas here ahead of the evening prayers on Friday, a week after the city witnessed violence following the congregational prayers.
The district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police were seen patrolling the city with heavy force since morning while clerics from the Ala Hazrat Dargah appealed to residents to maintain peace.
Internet restrictions remained in place in Bareilly and very few people were seen in markets.
On September 26, locals and police clashed in the heart of the city following Friday prayers after the cancellation of a proposed protest over the "I Love Muhammad" posters. Several people were injured in the clashes.
Police have lodged 10 FIRs and booked hundreds, mostly unidentified suspects, for the violence. So far, over 70 people, including cleric Tauqeer Raza Khan, his aides and some relatives, have been arrested.
District Magistrate Avnish Singh said senior officers from police and administration spent Thursday night touring sensitive areas and interacting with local residents, who assured that communal harmony would be maintained.
"We are still carrying out foot patrols. The arrangements are foolproof," Singh said.
Senior Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya said the city has been divided into four super zones and eight zones for tighter surveillance, with four IPS officers brought in from other districts for special monitoring.
Heavy police and paramilitary deployment was visible outside major mosques including Nau Mahal Masjid, Ala Hazrat Dargah, Azam Nagar Masjid in the Kotwali area, and Baradari mosque. Drone cameras are also being used to monitor the situation.
Markets such as Roadways Bazaar, Kutubkhana, Shivaji Marg, Alamgirganj, Sarafa, Sahmatganj and Qila Bazaar opened on Friday but the usual hustle and bustle was missing.
Shopkeepers remained cautious, ready to shut down immediately in case of any disturbance.
Internet services remained suspended.
Sajjadanashin of Ala Hazrat Dargah, Badrush Shariah Mufti Ahsan Miyan, urged Muslims to offer Friday prayers peacefully and return home.
"Do not pay attention to rumours. Peace must be preserved at all costs," he said in an appeal.
The cleric announced that the annual 'Julus-e-Gausia', traditionally taken out to mark the Urs of Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani, will not be held this year in view of the current situation.
Instead, a brief programme will be held at 2 pm on Saturday at Sailani Raza Chowk, where clerics will address the gathering, followed by special prayers and 'langar' distribution.
Mufti Ahsan Miyan and Anjuman president Haji Shariq Noori said the decision applies only for this year and the procession will resume with full grandeur next year.

It was shared by a social media user Sachin Gupta, who shared that the home guards are Veer Bahadur and Ram Pal and the man who was being thrashed is Virendra Kumar. The home guards were seen pinning the man down on the ground.&nbsp;
The home guards were also heard saying in the video, "You take free ration from the government and don't even vote."&nbsp;
After the clip of the incident started doing rounds on the internet, the Bareilly police initiated action against the home guards and a probe is currently underway.&nbsp;
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi also reacted to the viral video. She said, "People get rations because every citizen in this country has the right to food. The grain is grown by farmers, money that is spent on the distribution of it is of the people."
She further said, "Does the BJP government want to make the public hostage by spending a little of their money on them? Where did these policemen get the courage to behave like BJP goons and be so cruel to our Dalit brothers?"

Sub-divisional magistrate of Meerganj tehsil in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly has been removed from his post after a video surfaced in which he is purportedly seen to have asked a man to squat in his office as a punishment.
The man reached the SDM's office to lodge his complaint about the alleged encroachment of a cremation ground but the official allegedly told him &ldquo;murga bano (squatting and holding both ears)&rdquo; as a punishment. A video of the incident went viral on Friday.
Divisional Commissioner of Bareilly Saumya Agarwal on Saturday said that a probe has been ordered into the incident.
District Magistrate of Bareilly Shivakant Dwivedi said that prima facie laxity on the part of the SDM Udit Pawar has emerged and he has been attached to the district headquarters. Pawar has been replaced by Desh Deepak Singh as Bareilly SDM.
Pawar has denied all allegations saying the complainant squatted &ldquo;on his own&rdquo;.
"I did not ask any complainant to squat. The youth who came to my office squatted on his own as he entered my room. His friends took photographs and made videos, and then made those videos viral." "I assured them that the matter will be probed by the tehsildar, and action will be taken if any encroachment of cremation ground is found," Pawar added.
The complainant has alleged that when he and some villagers asked the SDM to act on the alleged encroachment in Mandanpur village, Pawar got angry and insulted them and then asked one of them to squat as punishment.
Villagers of Mandanpur village said that the cremation ground has been encroached by some Muslims.

An army man lost his leg and is in a critical condition after a TTE allegedly pushed him under a moving train following an argument here on Thursday, officials said.
Victim Sonu was allegedly pushed from the Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express on Platform Number 2 of Bareilly Junction railway station here in the morning, they said.

"We are looking at the CCTV footage," Senior Finance Manager of Moradabad Division under the Northern Railways, Sudhir Singh, said.
According to railway officials, an argument broke out between Bore and Sonu over ticket.
In a fit of anger, Bore allegedly pushed the army man out and he fell under the train. "He was rushed to a military hospital. He has lost his leg and his condition remains critical," an official said.
Station House Officer of Government Railway Police Ajit Pratap Singh said, "TTE Bore has been booked under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (attempt to murder). He is absconding and efforts to arrest him are on." Reportedly, some co-passengers beat up the TTE after the incident.

A similar demand was made by one Sanju Gupta from Uttar Pradesh, who filed an <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/unprotected-sex-during-lockdown-india-s-hiv-infection-data-revealed-in-rti-1651076254565">RTI (Right to Information)</a> after her husband's refusal to share his salary details.
&nbsp;She had filed an application at the Central Public Information Officer (CPIO), Bareilly, Income Tax Department that also refused to provide details under RTI citing husband's dissent.
Gupta then sought details from the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/world-news/red-bull-plane-swap-crash-usa-s-faa-had-denied-exemption-request-say-reports-after-stunt-goes-wrong-1651065382859">First Appellate Authority (FAA)</a> which also upheld CPIO's order.
The move prompted Gupta to file an appeal at Central Information Commission, which after reviewing previous judgements of the top court and high courts directed CPIO to provide the woman with the details of her husband's income.
The order cited that CPIO should disclose husband's next taxablae/gross income avaiable with them within 15 daus from the date of receit. the order was passed on September 19, 2022.

Stampede-like scenes were witnessed at the event organised under the Opposition party's 'Ladki Hun, Lad Sakti Hun' election campaign. Videos posted on social media by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders showed some girls falling, those behind them stumbling, while others tried to run past. A few people tried to rescue those stuck underneath even as panic increased.

BJP leader Priti Gandhi, while tweeting visuals of the incident, said, "Shocking visuals from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh!&nbsp;A stampede-like situation occurred at the Congress marathon. Several girls fell &amp; have been hurt. Thankfully no lives were lost. Is it right to play with human lives to fulfill your political ambitions, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra?"
Congress leader Supriya Aron reacted to the news by drawing a parallel with the recent stampede at the Vaishno Devi Shrine. She said that the tendency to move before others is part of human nature. She said that participants at the marathon were young girls, and some 'bhaag-daud' (chaos) occurred at the event. She also tendered an apology for the incident.
Videos from the marathon also showed lack of adherence to Covid-appropriate protocol, with no social distancing, and improper use of face masks. This occurred even as the Congress party has been accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of giving preference to crowded rallies instead of controlling the disease's spread.
Uttar Pradesh is headed for Assembly elections with the ruling BJP facing multiple competitors like the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, among others.

The UP govt has decided to name and shame people accused of sexual harassment and other crimes against women. The Yogi govt is planning Operation Durachari under which it will put up posters carrying pictures of accused at prominent road crossings in the state. The directions were issued by CM Yogi Adityanath to instil&nbsp;confidence among women and check crime against them, an official spokesperson said on Thursday. The CM also directed that those involved in such crimes should be punished by women police

Lucknow, PTI: The authorities in Uttar Pradesh will put up posters carrying pictures of people accused of sexual harassment and other crimes against women at prominent road crossings in the state.
The directions were issued by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to instill confidence among women and check crime against them, an official spokesperson said on Thursday.
"The CM at a high-level meeting here on Thursday directed to put up posters of those involved in crimes against women at prominent crossings. He has also directed that those involved in such crimes should be punished by women police," the spokesman said.
The CM said in case of any crime against a woman, police officers of the area such as the SHO and Circle Officer will be made responsible.
The "anti-Romeo squads" constituted in all districts of the state to instil a sense of security among women have been made more active and the CM hailed their efforts, the official said.
The squad, which is active in every district of the state, was constituted to control incidents of molestation and check their harassment.
Earlier, the state government had put up posters of anti-CAA protesters, allegedly involved in damaging public property, at prominent road crossings in Lucknow.
Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Kumar Awasthi stressed on building a better image of police so that women could trust them.
According to a statement, Awasthi reviewed efforts made by police for women security in Allahabad, Agra, Bareilly, Kanpur, Lucknow, Meerut, Varanasi and Gorakhpur.
Since the constitution of the &ldquo;anti-Romeo squads&rdquo;, more than 83 lakh people have been &ldquo;checked at over 35 lakh places&rdquo;, including schools, colleges, markets, malls and parks, the statement said.
FIRs have been lodged against 7,351 people while 11,564 arrested, it said.
At the meeting, Awasthi instructed officials concerned that any untoward incident against women and girls should be stopped and strict action should be taken against the culprits.
