Passenger vehicle retail sales in India fell by 7% year-on-year in June, with severe heatwave conditions contributing to a 15% drop in showroom walk-ins, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Total passenger vehicle registrations last month were 2,81,566 units, compared to 3,02,000 units in June 2023.
<h3>Dip in passenger vehicle sales</h3>
FADA President Manish Raj Singhania noted that despite improved product availability and substantial discounts, market sentiment remains subdued due to extreme heat and delayed monsoons. Dealer feedback indicated challenges such as low customer inquiries and postponed purchase decisions. Inventory levels of passenger vehicles have reached an all-time high, ranging from 62 to 67 days.
Singhania emphasized the need for passenger vehicle Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to exercise caution and implement effective inventory management strategies to mitigate financial strain from high interest costs. FADA urges OEMs to adopt prudent inventory control and proactively engage with the market.
In contrast, two-wheeler registrations increased by 5% year-on-year to 13,75,889 units in June. However, extreme heat led to a 13% decrease in potential customer walk-ins. Stalled monsoon and election-related market slowdowns particularly impacted rural sales, which fell from 59.8% in May to 58.6% in June.
<h3>Commercial vehicle sales drop</h3>
Commercial vehicle sales dropped by 5% to 72,747 units last month, from 76,364 units in June 2023. The industry continues to face challenges due to high temperatures affecting the agricultural sector and infrastructural project slowdowns. Tractor sales also declined by 28% year-on-year to 71,029 units in June.
Three-wheeler registrations rose by 5% to 94,321 units in June, compared to 89,743 units in the previous year. Overall retail sales increased marginally year-on-year to 18,95,552 units in June.
FADA's outlook for the two-wheeler segment is optimistic with the arrival of the monsoon expected to boost sales, despite challenges such as agricultural cash flow constraints and regional market variations. In the passenger vehicle segment, high inventory levels and ongoing low market sentiment necessitate cautious management. The commercial vehicle sector anticipates potential growth driven by renewed infrastructure projects and seasonal demands, despite current slowdowns.
FADA, representing over 30,000 dealership outlets, collated vehicle registration data for June from 1,567 out of 1,700 RTOs across India. The overall rating for July auto retail performance is cautiously optimistic with a moderate outlook.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) in its March auto sales report has revealed that there has been only a moderate sales growth of 3.14% year-on-year.

As per the report, sales of two-wheeler saw 5% growth while, three-wheeler segment saw 17% growth. The electric vehicle sales also grew with 2 wheeler EV market share jumping to 9.12% for the first time.&nbsp; However, the sales of passenger vehicles witnessed a downturn of 2% month-on-month in March and 6% decline on-year sales.
As per FADA, the two-wheeler segment showcased resilience even amid economic concerns, election uncertainties and intense competition, showing &ldquo;strategic evolution&rdquo;, especially in the premium and electric vehicles.&nbsp;

The three-wheeler segment's growth is amplified with the increasing acceptance of EVs. This depicts an optimistic trend despite potential challenges from election uncertainties.&nbsp;
Like passenger vehicle, the sales of commercial vehicles also fell by 6% on-year due to election-induced purchase slowdowns with strong demand in specific sectors like coal and cement transportation, stated FADA.
"The two-wheeler (2W) and three-wheeler (3W) segments saw increases of 5% and 17% respectively, while passenger vehicles (PV), tractors (Trac) and commercial vehicles (CV) faced declines of 6%, 3%, and 6% respectively. The 2W segment demonstrated resilience and adaptability, with electric vehicle (EV) sales surging due to the expiration of the FAME 2 subsidy on March 31st. This led to a notable boost in the 2W-EV market share to 9.12%&rdquo;, said FADA President Manish Raj Singhania.
Singhania further added that positive market sentiment was supported by seasonal events, improved vehicle supply, and financial incentives.
&nbsp;&ldquo;Despite facing market volatility and intense competition, the industry is strategically evolving, particularly in the premium and EV categories, signalling a bright future. The 3W segment showed an encouraging sales trend hitting an all-time high retail, driven by the growing acceptance of EVs. The introduction of EV autos and loaders positively impacted the retail environment,&rdquo; he said.

The auto sales for the financial year 2023-24 saw significant highs achieving a 10% on-year growth. Two-wheelers saw 9%, three-wheelers 49%, passenger vehicles 8.45%, tractors 8% and commercial vehicles 5% growth.
FADA called FY24 a milestone year for passenger vehicle sales. &ldquo;Factors such as improved vehicle availability, a compelling model mix and the launch of new models played pivotal roles. Enhanced supply dynamics, strategic marketing efforts, ever expanding quality road infrastructure and strong demand in the SUV segment, now holding a 50 per cent market share, significantly contributed to this success,&rdquo; it added.&nbsp;

As per FADA, the auto sector faces a nuanced challenge with a notable decline in consumer sentiment among urban Indians due to a restraint in discretionary spending. The Reserve Bank of India's decision to keep repo rates unchanged at 6.50% would continue to &ldquo;badly impact retail sales of all vehicles, especially entry level vehicles&rdquo; as these buyers are extremely price sensitive, stated FADA.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Given the continued inflationary trend without any relief in finance rates, these prospective buyers may continue to hesitate. Coupled with the forthcoming elections, these challenges will influence the Industry, potentially curbing vehicle sales across all segments,&rdquo; the FADA report added

Of notable significance is the passenger vehicle segment, which experienced a substantial 12% growth in sales during the same period. Electric vehicles (EVs) played a pivotal role in driving this growth, constituting 53% of the surge in the three-wheeler market, primarily propelled by the increasing adoption of electric e-rickshaws alongside improved market sentiment and consumer engagement.
FADA underscored a blend of positive trends and challenges influencing the near-term outlook of the auto retail sector. While robust signals from the rural sector and demand for premium and entry-level segments are expected to bolster the two-wheeler market, the three-wheeler and commercial vehicle sectors are anticipated to benefit from the financial year-end rush and infusion of funds into the market.
However, FADA cautioned about potential dampening factors, notably the anticipation of elections which might lead to deferred purchases across segments, particularly in the commercial vehicle sector. Auto industry remains resilient in the month of January with the wholesales of passenger vehicles rising 14% YOY to 3,93,074 units. As per industry body SIAM, this highest-ever sales is driven by robust demand for utility vehicles.
Meanwhile, commercial vehicle sales did not grow in the month of January, the data showed. However, SIAM's president Vinod Aggarwal has expressed optimism that it is likely to see good offtake in the next two months of this financial year.

As per the data issued by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), dispatches of passenger vehicles from manufacturers to dealers stood at 3,46,080 units in January 2023.
Two-wheeler wholesales rose 26% to 14,95,183 units last month as compared with 11,84,376 units in January last year.
"Passenger vehicle sales have remained resilient led by positive consumer sentiments, while the two-wheeler segment witnessed good growth in January as well as the rural market continues to recover," Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) President Vinod Aggarwal said.

Three-wheeler wholesales witnessed a growth of 9% at 53,537 units as against 48,903 units in January 2023.
"Passenger vehicles and three-wheelers continue to post their highest-ever sales till date, in FY 24, for the period April to January," SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said.
According to SIAM, market leader Maruti Suzuki India posted wholesales of 1,66,802 units last month, up from 1,47,348 units in January last year. Rival Hyundai Motor India sold 57,115 units as compared to 50,106 units in the same month a year ago. Mahindra &amp; Mahindra's wholesales were at 43,068 units as against 33,040 units in the same month last year, it added.
In the motorcycle segment, Hero MotoCorp sold 3,89,752 units last month in the domestic market as against 3,26,467 units in the year-ago period, while Honda Motorcycle &amp; Scooter India posted wholesales of 1,83,638 units as compared to 1,27,912 units in January 2023.
Bajaj Auto Ltd sold 1,78,056 units of motorcycles last month as compared to 1,38,860 units in January 2023, SIAM said.
Scooters also saw strong traction with market leader Honda Motorcycle &amp; Scooter India posting 1,98,874 units, up from 1,50,243 units in January last year. TVS Motor company also had robust growth posting 1,24,664 units as against 1,00,354 units in the same month last year, while Suzuki Motorcycle India also saw its wholesales rising to 78,477 units as compared to 65,991 units in the year-ago month.
On the outlook, Aggarwal said, "Government's strategic focus on mobility in Budget 2024, including strengthening the electric vehicle ecosystem, especially the charging infra and public transport, should help in continuing with the overall growth momentum for the auto sector."

Rajesh Menon, director general of SIAM said the moderate growth in passenger vehicles to a high base in November 2022 while highlighting that it was "the highest ever sales in the month of November".

There is a significant demand for two-wheelers at the more premium end of the market with young, aspiring bikers making purchases for the entire experience of motorcycling.&nbsp;

Manish Raj Singhania, President of FADA, highlighted to Business Today the 19% upswing in vehicle sales, which soared to 37.93 lakh units compared to last year's 31.95 lakh during the same period.
Notably, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, commercial vehicles, and passenger vehicles recorded substantial hikes of 21%, 41%, 8%, and 10%, respectively. However, the tractor segment experienced a marginal decline of 0.5%.
Breaking down the figures, the festive period witnessed the sale of 28.93 lakh two-wheeler vehicles, marking a notable increase from the previous year's 23.96 lakh units. Additionally, 5.4 lakh passenger vehicles, 1.4 lakh three-wheelers, and 1.2 lakh commercial vehicles were sold, collectively summing up to 37.93 lakh vehicles during the festive period.
Singhania attributed the surge in two-wheeler sales to rural areas, underscoring their substantial contribution to the overall growth. He also noted a sluggish start during Navratri for passenger vehicles, which picked up momentum and ended the period with a 10% growth by Diwali.

A year-on-year analysis highlights widespread growth across various vehicle segments. Two-wheeler sales grew by an impressive 22 percent, three-wheeler retails soared by 49 percent, and passenger vehicle sales increased by 19 percent. Commercial vehicles also experienced a sales growth of 5 percent. However, tractor retail sales declined by 10 percent compared to the same month last year.
Passenger vehicle registrations showed a 19 percent year-on-year increase last month, reaching 3,32,248 units, mainly due to improved vehicle availability and new product launches.
Two-wheeler retail sales recorded a 22 percent growth, totaling 13,12,101 units last month, compared to 10,78,286 units in September 2022. This growth was attributed to the introduction of new models and attractive promotional offers, particularly in rural areas.
Commercial vehicle registrations rose by 5 percent year-on-year, reaching 80,804 units last month, while three-wheeler sales saw an impressive 49 percent increase to 1,02,426 units. In contrast, tractor sales declined to 54,492 units from 60,321 units in the previous September.
FADA President Manish Raj Singhania noted that the market is gearing up for the upcoming festive season, which includes a 42-day window starting with Navratri after the Shraadh period on October 14. With promising indicators, FADA is optimistic about a thriving festive season for the auto retail sector.

However, the festive season provided a silver lining, as rural markets experienced a surge in demand. This uptick was attributed to the auspiciousness associated with purchasing vehicles between September and November.
Manish Raj Singhania, President of FADA, expressed optimism about the rural market's revival this year to Business Today, anticipating it to outperform the previous year. However, he cautioned that it might not reach pre-COVID levels just yet, attributing the medium-term challenges to unexpected rainfall patterns in August, which could extend the recovery timeline to about two years.

For instance, the prices of entry-level two-wheelers surged from Rs 38-39,000 to Rs 60,000, while models like the Alto went from costing around Rs 1.82 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) of India shows that retail vehicle sales in India has gone down in July as compared to the previous month. As per the report, heavy rainfall and flood like situation in North India has caused a slowdown in sales
The sales of two-wheelers dipped 6%, passenger vehicles fell 4% and tractors slumped 8%. Commercial vehicle retail sales closed flat at -0.2%. Meanwhile, the sales of three wheelers grew by 9% in July.

"July was particularly commendable for the 3W category, which registered an all-time high sale of 94,148 units, translating to a 74% YoY and 9 percent MoM growth,&rdquo; FADA said in a statement.
However this year's July sales have done much better than the previous year. On a year-on-year basis, it has maintained a steady 10% growth with all vehicle categories recording a positive growth. Two-wheelers recorded 8% growth, three-wheelers saw a whopping 74% rise, passenger vehicles reported 4% surge and commercial vehicles saw 2% growth.
FADA president Manish Singhania said that despite challenges like Monsoon and a tilt towards EVs the two-wheeler segment has shown resilience.
&ldquo;Despite challenges like heavy monsoons and a tilt towards EVs due to high fuel prices, 2W showed resilience in July '23, with increased demand and trust in reputable brands. The 3W segment's record numbers indicate industry potential and a growing EV interest. Yet, addressing issues like OEM support and dealer engagement remains crucial,&rdquo; FADA president Manish Singhania said.
He also expressed his confidence on the industry picking up during the festive season and that the PV segment will benefit from new product launch coupled with high demand in the SUV category.
IMD's projection of a below average rainfall for August might be a challenge as it would lead to lower crop yields. This could impact the purchasing power, especially in rural regions, thereby impacting sales.&nbsp;

The two-wheeler sales continued to decline in July even as the sales of passenger vehicle (PV) saw a rise. Meanwhile, the sales of electric two-wheeler has crossed 51,000 in July which is a 11% improvement compared to June.

<h2>Hero MotoCorp</h2>
Hero MotoCorp recorded a 12% decline in total sales compared to the same period last year. The manufacturer sold only 3,91,310 units as compared to 4,45,580 units last year. Similarly the domestic sales also saw a drop as only 3,71,204 units were sold which is down from 4,30,684 units that were sold in July 2022.
"The numbers are reflective of the inclement weather conditions in July, including unprecedented rains and floods in certain parts of the country," the company said in a statement. "The incessant rains and the floods caused crop damage in several states and also resulted in a sharp decline in customer footfalls at the dealerships," the statement added.
<h2>Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India</h2>
The sales of two-wheeler declined to 3,38,310 units in July. The company reported a total sales of 4,43,643 units in July last year. This July HMSI sales includes domestic sales of 3,10,867 units and exports of 27,443 units.
<h2>Bajaj Auto</h2>
The total two-wheeler sales dropped by 15% from 315,054 units in July last year to 268,840 units in the same month this year. The domestic two-wheeler sales dropped 14% to 1,41,990 units from 1,26,850 units Y-O-Y. The exports too declined 16% to 1,26,850 units.
<h2>TVS Motor</h2>
Meanwhile, TVS Motor saw a growth of 4% in sales in July. The sales increased from 299,658 units in July 2022 to 312,307 units in July 2023. Domestic two-wheeler sales registered a growth of 17% to 235,230 units in July 2023 from 201,942 units in July 2022.
<h2>Suzuki Motorcycle India</h2>
Suzuki Motorcycle India also recorded a whopping 41.5% growth in July 2023 compared to the same month last year. The company sold 107,836 units in July 2023 out of which 80,309 were sold in domestic markets and exported 27,527 units to the international markets

Domestic wholesales of passenger vehicles grew 4.7% in March at 2,92,030 units as compared to the same month last year, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said on Thursday.
In March last year, wholesales of passenger vehicles were at 2,79,525 units.
Two-wheeler sales clocked 12,90,553 units in the domestic market last month, as compared to 11,98,825 units in the year-ago period, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said.
Total vehicle wholesales last month stood at 16,37,048 units, as compared to 15,10,534 units a year ago, it added.
For the fiscal ended March 31, domestic wholesales of passenger vehicles were at 38,90,114 units, as compared to 30,69,523 units in the previous year.
Two-wheeler wholesales in FY23 were at 1,58,62,087 units, as against 1,35,70,008 units in FY22, SIAM said.
Total vehicles wholesales across categories were higher at 2,12,04,162 units in FY23, as against 1,76,17,606 units in FY22, SIAM said.

But the management remains optimistic stating "With the economy gradually opening up coupled with several other positive indicators, such as encouraging farm activity, confident consumer index and marriage season, a swift revival in sales is expected in the fourth quarter." It is not just Hero that has hit a speed bump in sales, competitor Bajaj also reported a fall in sales for November, though a smaller one with a 10% drop. While south based TVS Motor reported a 29% drop in it's 2 wheeler sales as well.
