A 56-year-old Indian-origin woman succumbed to a head injury suffered during an assault while out on a street in the eastern England city of Leicester and a 23-year-old male suspect charged with her murder has been remanded in custody.
Nila Patel died in hospital from her injuries last week after being attacked as a pedestrian and Leicestershire Police has said a post-mortem examination gave the "provisional cause" of her death as a head injury.
Michael Chuwuemeka appeared before Leicester Crown Court sitting at Loughborough on Tuesday charged with her murder and also faces additional charges of dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply Class B or banned drugs, attempted grievous bodily harm relating to a prior incident and assault of an emergency worker following an alleged assault on a police officer after his arrest on June 24.
He has been additionally charged with causing actual bodily harm in connection with a separate victim in London earlier.
&ldquo;A post-mortem examination has been conducted and a provisional cause of Nila's death has been given as a head injury,&rdquo; Leicestershire Police said.
The force also shared a statement on Tuesday issued by Patel&rsquo;s son Jaidan and daughter Danika in tribute to their &ldquo;kind-hearted and devoted&rdquo; mother, who was a &ldquo;loyal friend, and an incredibly hard worker&rdquo;.
&ldquo;We are heartbroken, but we want the world to know who our mum truly was &ndash; a beautiful, vibrant soul who deserved so much more,&rdquo; reads the statement.
&ldquo;Her love was quiet but powerful &ndash; shown through warm meals, thoughtful words, and a smile that could light up any room. She always put others before herself, offering comfort without ever asking for anything in return. Even when life was hard, she carried on with strength, dignity and a smile on her face,&rdquo; they said.
Jaiden and Danika said she raised them with patience, love, and unwavering support, and that their greatest wish was always to make her proud.
Their statement adds: &ldquo;Mum&rsquo;s life was full of love, and the stories we&rsquo;ve heard from those who knew her have reminded us of just how deeply she touched the lives around her. She was truly rich in love and generosity.
&ldquo;We will miss her more than words can ever express. We didn&rsquo;t get the chance to say goodbye, and that pain is something we carry every day. But we will continue to speak her name with pride, honour her memory, and live by the values she taught us. Mum&rsquo;s story matters. Her life mattered. We ask that anyone who hears her story helps us keep her name and memory alive.&rdquo; Leicestershire Police has set up an online portal to encourage people with more information into the attack on Aylestone Road in Leicester on June 24.

The incident was reported at New Usmanpur police station earlier in the day, he said. Following this, a police team was immediately dispatched to the hospital.
"On reaching the spot, it was found that a female patient admitted inside Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital (JPC) was sexually assaulted by another patient admitted in the same ward," a senior police officer said in a statement.
The accused, identified as Md Faiz, a resident of Kachchi Khajuri in Delhi, was arrested on the spot, police said.
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of law at New Usmanpur Police Station, and further investigation is underway.&nbsp;

After large-scale detentions, demolition of homes, and crackdowns inside Kashmir, ordinary citizens, students, and small traders outside of J-K are being attacked and forced to return," the Mirwaiz said in a post on X.
He was referring to incidents of harassment of Kashmiris working in other states, including Uttarakhand, in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack last week.
"Being themselves at the receiving end of all forms of violence and subsequent suffering for decades, Kashmiris' condemnation, empathy, and grief for the victims of the Pahalgam bloodbath is straight from the heart, yet they are being vilified and targeted," he said.
"I appeal to the people of India not to fall prey to hatred and media propaganda creating mistrust of Kashmiris and reciprocate in ensuring their safety, as they have always done in times of crisis towards all visitors and tourists," he added.
The Mirwaiz said the "collective punishment" being meted out to Kashmiris both inside and outside Jammu and Kashmir is "unjust and inhuman."

The Guardian reported that the alleged abuses were meted out in June this year, but the school director allegedly covered up the abuses and made other teachers sign a document to conceal the problem.
Meanwhile, the accused teachers claimed that their treatment of the kids was discipline, while the director denied covering up the abuse allegation saying that he made other teachers signed a non-disclosure agreement only to protect the privacy of those involved.
The issue came to light after a whistleblower made revelations about the harassment incidents at the school in August this year.

As per a report by The Washington Post, the 33-year-old passenger identified as Alexander Tung Cuu Le, a resident of California, was flying to Los Angeles from Los Cabos in Mexico on an American Airlines flight 377.&nbsp;
The episode began 20 minutes after Flight 377 left Los Cabos airport. Citing an affidavit filed by the FBI, the outlet said that Mr Le grabbed a flight attendant's shoulder as he was providing food and beverages and asked for coffee. He then walked to the front of the plant and sat in an unoccupied row near the first-class cabin, according to the affidavit. When another flight attendant asked Mr Le to return to his seat, he closed both of his fists and assumed a "fighting stance", the FBI said. The flight attendant then decided to report the behaviour to the pilot and turned around after which Mr Le attacked him, The New York Times reported.&nbsp;

He lived between his father's home in a city and grandparents' house on a reserve. There was violence and abuse in both households, it said.
Sanderson started drinking and smoking marijuana at around age 12 to cope with problems, the document said. Cocaine followed soon after.
Parole documents said he barged into his ex-girlfriend's home in July 2017 while she was with friends, punched a hole in the door of a bathroom while his two children were hiding in a bathtub and threw a cement block at a vehicle parked outside.
He got into a fight a few days later at a store, threatening to kill an employee and burn down his parent's home, documents said.
That November he threatened an accomplice into robbing a fast food restaurant by hitting him in the head with a firearm and stomping on his head. He then stood watch during the robbery.
In April 2018, he stabbed two men with a fork while drinking and beat someone unconscious.
He got into trouble twice while in prison for having contraband before he was let out in August 2021 on statutory release. But he got into trouble that year and had his release changed for failing to be honest with his parole supervisor about continuing what he acknowledged was a &ldquo;rocky&rdquo; relationship with his common-law spouse.
Parole documents also stated he should not enter into relationships &mdash; either intimate or non-sexual &mdash; with women unless he had prior written permission from his parole officer.
&ldquo;It is the Board's opinion that you will not present an undue risk to society if released on statutory release,&rdquo; parole documents said.
But officials say he violated parole, and in May, a Crime Stoppers bulletin was issued for Sanderson, warning he was unlawfully at large.

The purported video clip showed the woman cop, posted as sub-inspector in Defence colony police station, slapping her father-in-law multiple times. The accused woman let him go only after another policeman who was present at the scene intervened.&nbsp;
Prior to the physical altercation with her father-in-law, a heated argument between the elderly man and the former's mother broke out. The argument soon turned into physical assault when the cop jumped to her mother&rsquo;s 'aid' and thrashed her father-in-law.&nbsp;
According to reports, the woman cop is in the middle of a legal battle with her in-laws.&nbsp;

He reportedly said that 4-5 rape cases are being reported every day in the state, and special measures are needed to counter sexual harassment, abuse, and coercion. The government announced that the Cabinet Committee on Rape and Law &amp; Order will review all these cases.

A month earlier, 27-year-old Noor Muqaddam, the daughter of a former diplomat, was raped, tortured, and killed allegedly by the scion of a prominent industrialist family.
In July 2016, social media star Qandeel Baloch was murdered by her brother for what he called "intolerable behaviour". In June 2002, a woman named Mukhtaran Mai had been gangraped on orders of the village council as punishment for her brother's relationship with a woman from a rival tribe. In April 1999, 28-year-old Samia Sarwar had been shot dead allegedly be her family for seeking a divorce over domestic violence.
In light of such distressing cases, Pakistan ranks 167 out of 170 countries on the Global Women, Peace, and Security Index. According to police records, 41,000 women went missing in Pakistan's Punjab province in the last 5 years, and over 3,500 of them had not been found by March 2022.
Studies say that at least 32% women in Pakistan have experienced physical violence, and 28% women aged between 15 and 49 years have been victims of intimate partner violence. Experts agree that these figures are conservative. Meanwhile, the conviction rate is limited to 1% to 2.5% in crimes against women.
The imposition of an emergency in Pakistan's Punjab has been sparked by an alarming spike in violence. On 14 June, a rickshaw driver allegedly raped a teenage girl in Muzaffargarh. On 27 May, a 25-yr-old woman was allegedly gangraped on a Karachi-Multan train. A day earlier, robbers allegedly raped a minor girl in front of her family in Pattoki. On 22 May, a bus driver working with a private company allegedly raped a woman in Bahawalpur.
With panic gripping women, Pakistani authorities have announced a slew of measures. The steps include fast-track DNA examination by forensic labs to identify assailants. The government is also running anti-rape campaigns to spread awareness.
The authorities are also telling parents to not leave children unattended at home. Additionally, students will be sensitised at school regarding sexual harassment. The government will also consult civil society, women's rights activists, and teachers for prevention of sexual crimes.
It remains to be seen whether measures like imposition of emergency are effective in ending an entrenched culture of crimes against women and subsequent impunity in Pakistan.

With panic gripping women, Pakistani authorities have announced a slew of measures. The steps include fast-track DNA examination by forensic labs to identify assailants. The government is also running anti-rape campaigns to spread awareness.
The authorities are also telling parents to not leave children unattended at home. Additionally, students will be sensitised at school regarding sexual harassment. The government will also consult civil society, women's rights activists, and teachers for prevention of sexual crimes.
It remains to be seen whether measures like imposition of emergency are effective in ending an entrenched culture of crimes against women and subsequent impunity in Pakistan.

Two women had also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were receiving treatment in a hospital. Their condition was reported to be stable. Two others were slightly injured.
The footage of what happened both inside and outside the restaurant was just under five minutes. The Weibo user who was among the first to post the videos said in a post that it was “heartbreaking” to watch.
“Does that mean that dining out is so unsafe now, do we have to bring men with us everywhere we go?” the post read. “(These men) are no different from thugs.” When reached, the user declined to reveal the source of the videos, stating that it was “inconvenient” to do so.
By Sunday, the video of footage filmed inside the restaurant had garnered over 68 million views, while the footage showing the graphic assault outside the restaurant had been taken down.
Social media users have condemned the attack and criticised Tangshan police for being slow in arresting the suspects.
“I'm a woman, and I have a daughter,” said one Weibo user with the handle BaobaomaoDaren. “I wonder — as I'm creating value for society and spreading positive energy, will this society protect me and my child?” State broadcaster CCTV said in an online commentary that the suspects must be arrested as quickly as possible and “punished severely in accordance with the law” in order to account to the victims and the public.

The placement agency owner reportedly said that the couple dropped Rajni at his office in very poor condition. After some time he noticed that she was lying in her urine and wasn't able to move. He immediately rushed to the Safdarjung hospital where Rajni claims on Sunday the couple dragged her out of her room and chopped off her hair. She had injuries all over her body, he added. Police said the medical examination report of Safdarjung Hospital asserted that she had suffered from “physical assault”, “head trauma, and was “vomiting”. She also had injuries on her eyes, face, limbs, abdomen along with other body parts.Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Ghanshyam Bansal said that all efforts are being made to arrest the accused couple.
