Symptoms of RA
Some of the signs and symptoms of RA are persistent aches, stiffness and swelling in more than just one joint. Symptoms are common for hands, knee joints and feet with signs of fever, tiredness or fatigue and weakness.
Risk Factors&nbsp;of RA
RA can begin at any age, although it is more prevalent as one grows older. It is most common in adults in their sixties, women are more prone to get affected.&nbsp;There are higher chances of getting affected if there is a family history of the disease. Smoking can also raise the chance of having RA.
Diagnosis of RA
It is difficult to diagnose RA in the early stages. However, a doctor may prescribe the following to ascertain the condition.
● Blood tests: A high ESR&nbsp;or CRP&nbsp;level in people with rheumatoid arthritis may indicate the presence of an inflammatory process in the body.&nbsp;

According to a new study, kids whose parents smoke around them have a greater tendency to develop rheumatoid arthritis as adults. In fact, researchers have found evidence that women whose parents smoked had a 75% higher risk of developing the disorder.

This causes painful swelling and the severity of this disorder can also lead to bone erosion and joint deformity. 
The study which appeared in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatoid tracked more than 90,000 female nurses, between the age group of 25 and 42. Almost two-thirds of them never smoked themselves and 65% informed that their parents had smoked during their childhood. The participants were studied over the next 3 decades.
It was then discovered that about 350 of the women had developed rheumatoid arthritis in the later years of their life. The authors of the study estimated that childhood exposure to second-hand smoking boosted the risk of rheumatoid arthritis by 41%. And when the participants went on to smoke themselves as adults, after being exposed to second-hand smoking as kids, their risk of developing the disease was at 75%.
While this study may have its limitations&nbsp;as it is not applicable to males, it still highlights the side effects of second-hand smoking amongst young girls. Can secondhand smoke increase rheumatoid arthritis risk in women?

A new study presented at the Annual European Congress&nbsp;of Rheumatology suggests that secondhand smoke exposure in both childhood and adulthood is linked with an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis in women.
But what is secondhand smoke? As per the Centres for Disease and Control, secondhand smoke is &ldquo;the combination of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and the smoke breathed out by smokers&rdquo;.
The study included 79,806 women, around the age of 49, out of which 698 women developed rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed approximately 12 years after the study began in 1990. The association&nbsp;was primarily observed amongst never-smoking women. It was also found that about 13.5 percent of women reported exposure to cigarette smoke as children and 53.6 percent reported being exposed to smoking as adults. What was further observed is that an overall 58.9 percent had secondhand exposure in either adulthood or childhood and 8.25 percent had both.
The result of the study highlighted that &ldquo;smoking by-products, whether actively or passively inhaled, could generate autoimmunity, at least towards antigens involved in rheumatoid arthritis pathogenesis&rdquo;.
The need of the hour is to avoid smoking for the betterment of not just one&rsquo;s own health but also of those around them. If nothing else then passive smoking must definitely be avoided.
