Another Air India flight, this time from San Francisco to Mumbai via Kolkata, suffered a technical snag in one of its engines, forcing passengers to deplane during the scheduled halt in the West Bengal city early on Tuesday.
Flight AI180, a Boeing 777-200LR, landed in Kolkata at 12.45 am and was scheduled to depart for Mumbai at 2 am. However, during its scheduled halt, a technical snag was detected in the aircraft's left engine, delaying its onward journey. Around 5.20 am, an announcement was made on board asking all passengers to deplane.
The aircraft's captain informed the flyers that the step was being taken "in the interest of flight safety". Visuals from Kolkata airport showed the aircraft grounded on the tarmac, with airline personnel inspecting the faulty engine.
The incident added to growing safety concerns around wide-body aircraft after a series of similar events in the past few days.
On Monday morning, an Air India Dreamliner (AI315), flying from Hong Kong to Delhi, returned mid-air due to a suspected technical issue. The aircraft was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner &mdash; the same model involved in the recent Air India Flight 171 crash near Ahmedabad that killed over 270 people.
In a separate incident, a British Airways flight (BA35) bound for Chennai was forced to return to London Heathrow after a technical fault. The flight, which also operated on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, had remained airborne for nearly two hours before it turned back.
In view of the recent technical glitches and the deadly Ahmedabad plane crash, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has directed Air India to carry out additional maintenance action on all its Boeing aircraft.
Officials said the safety directive mandated a series of checks, including fuel parameter monitoring, diagnostics of critical systems, inspection of the cabin air compressor and related components, electronic engine control testing, and a review of take-off thrust and performance metrics.

A London-bound Air India plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed in a residential area here minutes after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. Many people were feared killed.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft (AI171) could be seen from afar, losing altitude rapidly and crashing in a ball of fire that sent plumes of thick black smoke spiralling up in the air.
The aircraft carrying 232 passengers and 10 crew crashed in Meghaninagar area near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport around 2 pm.
Meanwhile, Ahmedabad Police issued a list of 25 injured in plane crash in Ahmedabad.

Additional Chief Secretary of Gujarat Health Department says, "Ahmedabd Civil Hospital students' hostel, staff quarters and other residential areas are located in the area where the plane crashed. About 50 of those injured have been brought to Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad."
The pilot of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner issued a 'Mayday' distress call, denoting a full emergency, soon after takeoff, the Air Traffic Control at Ahmedabad said.
Former Gujarat chief minister and BJP leader Vijay Rupani was reported to be among the 230 passengers and 12 crew members on the doomed flight from Ahmedabad to London&rsquo;s Gatwick airport.
The plane crashed into the residential quarters of BJ Medical College doctors in Ahmedabad&rsquo;s Meghaninagar area shortly after take-off, according to eyewitnesses. The crash reportedly caused significant damage to buildings in the complex.
Aviation sources said the aircraft climbed just about 600-800 feet before it plummeted to the ground.
Eyewitness Haresh Shah told PTI that the aircraft was flying unusually low before crashing into the multi-storey residential blocks.
&ldquo;There are several five-floor buildings which serve as residential quarters. Many people in those apartments were injured as the buildings also caught fire,&rdquo; Shah said.
Another witness noted that the impact also led to several parked cars and vehicles catching fire.
While injuries have been reported by those present at the scene, there is no official confirmation yet regarding casualties among residents.
The residential complex is located close to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
Many of those injured were taken to the city civil hospital nearby.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, asking them to go to Ahmedabad and ensure all possible assistance to those affected in the tragedy, sources said.
Visuals from the area showed mangled metal of the wreckage, snarls of tangled wire and smoke rising from the charred remnants.
The ill-fated flight was under the command of Capt Sumeet Sabharwal along with First Officer Clive Kundar. While Sabharwal has 8,200 hours of flying experience, Kundar 1,100 hours, the DGCA said in a statement.
Immediately after departure from Runway 23, the aircraft fell on the ground outside the airport perimeter, it said.

The flight, which departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members onboard the Boeing 787-8 aircraft, Air India said in a statement on social media platform 'X'.
"Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals," it said.
The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals, the airline said.
"We have also set up a dedicated passenger hotline number 1800 5691 444 to provide more information," it said.
Air India also said that it is giving its full cooperation to the authorities investigating the incident.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Air India changed its profile picture on X to black after the plane crash.

Air India has launched its new AI-powered feature, eZ Booking, on Wednesday, aiming to enhance the flight booking experience.
Currently available exclusively to Maharaja Club members, Air India&rsquo;s loyalty program, eZ Booking allows customers to book their flights on airindia.com using either text or voice commands, making the process faster and more efficient.
The feature leverages Agentic AI technology to streamline the reservation process. By reducing the number of steps required, eZ Booking eliminates the need for users to navigate multiple screens. This system mimics human interaction, allowing users to naturally state their travel preferences, such as &ldquo;Book a flight from Delhi to Mumbai tomorrow&rdquo; or &ldquo;Find a round-trip from Chennai to Mumbai next week."
This launch builds on the success of Air India&rsquo;s AI chatbot, AI.g, which was introduced in May 2023. AI.g has already assisted over 7 million guest queries, maintaining a 97% resolution rate. Despite not filing a formal complaint, Patel received a refund from the airline. On September 18, he shared that Air India had contacted him directly after his video went viral on social media.

The notice follows a 20-hour delay of a San Francisco-bound Air India flight, during which passengers faced significant distress, with some fainting due to a non-functional air-conditioning system.

According to PTI, flight passengers also had to wait for around an hour in the aerobridge. Originally scheduled to depart at 3:30 pm on Thursday, the flight was rescheduled for Friday afternoon.
The DGCA highlighted delays for flights AI 183 from Delhi to San Francisco on May 30 and AI 179 from Mumbai to San Francisco on May 24.

Air India has sold four of its remaining Boeing 747-400 jumbo jetliners bidding an adieu to an era that had once paved way for the airline to the global league. As per The Economic Times, the four aircraft have been sold to US company AerSale, a supplier of aftermarket commercial jet engines and parts.&nbsp;

Out of the four, two aircraft will be converted to freighters and the other two will be dissembled for their parts. The transfer of the planes to AerSale will be managed by a Mumbai-based company Vman Aviation Services.&nbsp;
As per The Economic Times, Air India's new owner, Tata Group had no intention to use the 747s finding them uneconomical to operate in current conditions. Tata Group after acquiring Air India had mandated UK-based remarketing firm Skytech-AIC to sell the four planes. The airline last flew the 747 flight between Delhi and Mumbai in March 2021.
<h3>Boeing 747</h3>
Air India purchased the first Boeing 747 on March 22, 1971 entering the service in May that year. Back then, the airline operated four weekly flights from India to London. The flight had 423 seats in a triple-class configuration.
Until 2020, when the Indian Air Force acquired two Boeing 777s, Air India's aircraft was also used to ferry the prime minister, president and vice-president.
As per The Economic Times, the airline had back then debuted a new look in its aircraft exterior: silver and white with red details and windows described as Rajasthani style arches, intended to give the effect of a row of 'Jharokha' type balconies reminiscent of the Hawa Mahal at Jaipur.&nbsp; The branding also said, "Your Palace in the Sky".
JRD Tata who was the chairman of Air India when buying the aircraft had said that acquiring the aircraft had become necessary as its competitors were offering a product which was superior.
"One is that we cannot remain a competitive carrier unless we ensure that no other airline in the world offers better equipment or better service to our passengers than we do. The other is that for the first time the industry has...an aircraft large enough to cater to a mass tourist market. With the expected rapid growth of the flow of tourists to India in the years to come, Air India must be equipped to carry its proper share of the traffic," JRD had said after receiving the first 747.
The Economic Times quoted two pilots who flew the flight and said that Boeing 747 was a real pilot aircraft with smooth handling, reliability and a grandiose look.
"It is a very sturdy aircraft. With four engines, a very high redundancy has been built into it where even if you lose one engine, it would be safe to fly," Gautam Mehta, the first Pilot to fly the plane told The Economic Times.&nbsp;
Another pilot told the publication that 747 will always remain special, despite the arrival of next generation planes with fly-by-wire technology where the pilot's workload has reduced significantly.

As per Bloomberg, the unrest among aviation workers risks thwarting India&rsquo;s air travel boom. Pilots and aircraft engineers are crucial to support the country&rsquo;s rapid fleet expansion after IndiGo, Air India and Akasa placed orders for more than 1,100 aircraft combined.
AI Engineering's biggest client is Air India and its staff are upset over lack of career advancement opportunities because they haven&rsquo;t been promoted in the past seven years. As per the letter accessed by Bloomberg, the management promised a revised pay structure for technicians who have worked for at least two years with the firm but hasn&rsquo;t followed through. Meanwhile, the contractual employees who form 75% of the company's workforce feel discriminated because they have to serve longer notice periods and aren&rsquo;t given as many benefits as the permanent staff.
Bloomberg quoting AI Engineering representative said that the management has initiated discussions with the union to resolve the issue. It has said that the firm has revised salaries of all staff except technicians as a court case is pending and it is planning to revise the salary structure after the court case is withdrawn. In the case, the union had requested equal pay for contractual employees and permanent ones.
The Indian aviation sector has been under pressure as Vistara which is co-owned by Air India has been facing flight disruptions. The Air India pilots have also raised concerns of being underpaid and overworked are &ldquo;systemic&rdquo; across Tata&rsquo;s aviation empire.

Meanwhile, Domestic passengers increased by 13.46% compared to 137.6 million passengers in 2018-19.
Recently aviation regulators DGCA also released the summer schedule of flights, increasing the fleet by nearly 6% compared to last year.&nbsp;
Indian Airlines will operate a total of 24,275 weekly domestic flights during the summer schedule starting from March 31.&nbsp;
IndiGo, Air India and Vistara will operate more flights while SpiceJet will reduce departures during the 2024 summer schedule that spans from March 31 to October 26.
In the summer schedule, Indian carriers will connect 37 countries, including the US, the UK, Uzbekistan, Maldives, Georgia and Azerbaijan. The international flights will be operated from 27 domestic airports.

"We have zero tolerance for these things and have taken very strong action of not only terminating his service but are also planning to file an FIR as operating a flight under the influence of alcohol is a criminal act. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed," airline sources told the Times of India.&nbsp;
In 2022, the DGCA suspended nine pilots and thirty-two cabin crew members due to their failure to pass pre-flight breath analyser tests.

Air India Express on Saturday rescheduled its Lucknow-bound flight from Mumbai by 10 hours, citing &ldquo;operational reasons,&rdquo; triggering protests and slogan shouting against the Tata Group-owned carrier by some of the affected passengers, a source said.
Air India Express flight AIX-2773 was scheduled to depart from Mumbai at 9.19 pm on Saturday but the airline informed passengers at the last moment that the departure was revised to 7.15 am on Sunday, he said.
Air India Express, in a late evening statement, said it was forced to revise the timing of its flight 'due to inclement weather over Delhi this (Saturday) evening".
"Due to inclement weather over Delhi this evening, a number of flights were diverted, including our Guwahati-Delhi flight, which was diverted to Lucknow. Subsequent flights from Delhi and Mumbai (including Lucknow flight) have also been rescheduled due to the diversion," the Air India Express spokesperson said in the statement.
"We apologise for the inconvenience to our guests due to circumstances beyond our control," the airline added.
Meanwhile, alternatives are being organised, while refreshments, accommodation and transportation are being provided to impacted guests, Air India Express stated.
According to the source, the passengers received a message which read "regret to inform you that the departure of the flight on 16 Sep 2023 IX-2773 BOM-LKO is revised to 17 Sep 2023 07:15 due to operational reasons".
This led to protests and slogan shouting by the passengers against the airline, the source said.
"You may avail one-time free flight change up to 07 days on the same sector or full refund through Tia up to 2 hours prior to scheduled departure time," the message stated.

Air India Express which is in the process of being merged with Air Asia India, currently has 25 aircraft, while Air Asia India has 28 Airbus A320neo planes. As per Economic Times, with the addition of 50 more aircraft, the combined entity will become the second largest low-cost airline in the Indian market.
The report also mentioned that the combined entity will expand the fleet in two phases. While the first aircraft will join by this october, 25 planes will be added by June next year. The second phase will happen from August to December 2024.
An airline executive has told Economic Times that the airline will first strengthen its network in existing routes in both domestic and international space. The airline is also planning to expand to 30 international destinations including Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Turkey and Vietnam.
"The airline will initially strengthen its network in existing routes in both domestic and international rather than spreading too thin. We have a strong product position in the India-Gulf market, which has some of the busiest routes in India. After network densification, the second phase of expansion will be done in multiple domestic destinations," an airline executive told Economic Times.&nbsp;
