Qualcomm has announced its new Snapdragon C Platform ahead of Computex 2026, and it looks like the company is coming after the budget laptop segment in a big way. Sitting below the Snapdragon X and X2 series, the new chip is designed for affordable Windows laptops priced starting for as low as $300 or roughly the ₹35,000 price mark in India. That puts it in direct competition with Chromebooks and entry-level Windows machines that often struggle with performance.
The interesting bit is that Qualcomm is bringing AI hardware to this price segment. The Snapdragon C platform comes with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for local AI tasks, something that has mostly been limited to more expensive laptops so far. However, Qualcomm has confirmed that these chips will not qualify for Microsoft's Copilot+ PC programme, given CoPilot+&rsquo;s stringent requirements. How does that translate into the spec sheet, will be interesting to see.
<h2>Snapdragon C is built for everyday users</h2>
Despite the name, Qualcomm says the "C" in Snapdragon C stands for "Compute," not "Cheap." The platform is aimed at students, families, and small businesses that need an affordable laptop for everyday tasks without sacrificing battery life.
Unlike the Snapdragon X and X2 chips, which use Qualcomm's custom Oryon architecture, Snapdragon C goes in a different direction. It uses a customised version of Qualcomm's Kryo architecture, a design that has powered many smartphones and tablets over the years.
The chip uses a mix of performance and efficiency cores, a setup commonly found in mobile devices. Qualcomm says this should help deliver long battery life while keeping power consumption and heat levels under control. It could also allow manufacturers to build thinner and even fanless laptops.
<h2>AI is finally coming to budget laptops</h2>
One of the biggest talking points here is AI. Over the past year, AI-powered PCs have become a major focus for the industry, but most of them have been positioned in the premium segment.
With Snapdragon C, Qualcomm wants to bring some of those AI capabilities to more affordable machines. The chip includes a dedicated NPU for on-device AI processing, although Qualcomm has not revealed its performance rating yet.
It won't be powerful enough for Copilot+ branding, but it should still be able to handle several AI-powered Windows 11 features. In fact, the first Snapdragon C laptop spotted so far, an upcoming Acer device, already includes a dedicated Copilot key on the keyboard.
<h2>Qualcomm is taking a page from Apple and Google</h2>
The move comes at a time when more companies are looking at smartphone-style chips for laptops. Apple recently grabbed attention with the MacBook Neo, a more affordable Mac powered by the same A18 Pro chip found in recent iPhones. Qualcomm's decision to adapt its mobile-focused Kryo architecture for laptops feels like a similar play.
The platform could also play a role in Google's upcoming Googlebooks initiative, which is expected to bring Android and AI-focused experiences together in a new category of budget-friendly devices.
For now, Acer, HP, and Lenovo have confirmed plans to launch Snapdragon C-powered laptops. Exact specifications, pricing, and release dates are still under wraps, with Qualcomm expected to share more details during its Computex 2026 keynote.

The BJP quickly condemned the video, accusing the Congress of abusing the Prime Minister.
Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Wednesday described the post as another example of Congress&rsquo;s &ldquo;elitist mindset&rdquo; toward PM Modi&rsquo;s humble origins.

The UNESCO is working with India on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in addressing social and economic issues with technological innovation as New Delhi prepares to host the global summit on AI impact early next year, an official said on Friday.
&ldquo;India is a shining star for the rest of the world in terms of digital transformation and in terms of addressing some of the social and economic issues with technological innovation and the right policy,&rdquo; said Irakli Khodeli, Head of Ethics of AI Unit, Social and Human Sciences Sector, UNESCO.
&ldquo;The world is looking up to India to learn about that. It would be a significant part of the next year's summit as well,&rdquo; the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) official told PTI here at the "Third UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of AI 2025&rdquo;.
UNESCO, which has 193 countries as members, held the first summit in 2023 in the UK and the second in 2024 in South Korea on AI &ldquo;Safety&rdquo;. The event was held in Paris in February this year on AI &ldquo;Action&rdquo;.
&ldquo;It is time now for action to demonstrate AI impact,&rdquo; he said, pointing out that the time for discussing the ethical framework had passed with the recommendation report on AI.
&ldquo;We hope to be working with the (Indian) government as we start preparing for the Global Summit on AI Impact to be hosted by India early next,&rdquo; Khodeli said.
&ldquo;This is going to be a major event as participants will give updates, share their experiences and lessons learned,&rdquo; he added.Khodeli, underlining UNESCO&rsquo;s working relationship with the Indian government as a knowledge partner during India&rsquo;s G20 Presidency in 2023, said: &ldquo;India has been an important partner of UNESCO in our journey from the very beginning when the AI recommendation was prepared.&rdquo;India played a critical role and had an expert in the 24-member advocate group that prepared the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence Recommendation report -- a primary instrument adopted four years ago by the 193 UNESCO member countries.The official said the ethics policy is universally valid and pursued everywhere.Following the report, UNESCO has deployed another report, &ldquo;Readiness Assessment Methodology&rdquo;, for member countries to understand AI opportunities and the gaps to be filled for them to take full advantage of the revolutionary technology.
&ldquo;India is one of the top innovators - both in terms of technology and also in term of policy to govern the technology,&rdquo; observed Khodeli, underscoring the importance of policy innovation to ensure the technology is put to the best use for mankind, and create an environment that is conducive to investment and growth.
He noted India&rsquo;s extensive work on technologies, and said UNESCO was capturing those good practices, knowledge and experiences of governance of AI to make them available to the rest of the world for them to replicate such success.
In return, UNESCO is also bringing to India what the grouping has learned from the rest of the world, citing the example of the Bangkok Forum, where brainstorming sessions were held by close to 50 member countries, represented by senior officials at ministerial levels, he said.
&ldquo;We are doing the Readiness Assessment with over 70 countries. We are learning a lot about what works to promote AI and what doesn&rsquo;t work,&rdquo; he said, adding that the experiences and knowledge are shared with members, including India.
"India is famous for exporting its talent, and everybody knows the important part the people of Indian-origin play in big tech corporations around the world. That is something to be very proud of,&rdquo; he underlined.
He said UNESCO wants AI engineers to consider ethics as part of designing the technology, and during various talent trainings, ethics is part of the programmes.
Acknowledging the AI as an incredible breakthrough by humanity, Khodeli felt more work needed to be done to make the technology less resource-intensive.
Increasing access to AI means more data centres and infrastructure for the ecosystem that is currently resource-intensive, he added.
Khodeli called for a balance and parallel development of technology in terms of environment and resources, as this technology is predictable and beyond human brain revolution.
&ldquo;We need to focus on new AI systems that are less resource-intensive,&rdquo; he emphasised, adding, &ldquo;This transformation of AI is set to continue.&rdquo;

A new high-tech system using artificial intelligence, sensors, and satellite maps will soon help predict landslides, flash floods, forest fires, and droughts in real time -- part of an ambitious plan to make Idukki the most disaster-resilient hill district in the country.
The innovative Idukki Disaster Resilience and Information System (IDRIS)-- a first-of-its-kind early warning and planning platform -- will be rolled out this monsoon as a pilot project, said District Collector V Vigneshwari here on Tuesday.
The pilot rollout will begin in Adimaly and Rajakkad, two areas often hit by landslides, floods, and rising conflict between people and wildlife, an official release said.
IDRIS is the first system of its kind in India, combining real-time data, satellite maps, and advanced tools like Artificial Intelligence to send early warnings for natural disasters such as landslides, flash floods, wildfires, and drought, the release claimed.
The system will help local leaders and government officials make better, faster decisions. It does this by using GIS-based risk maps to guide where roads, buildings, and water systems should be built -- keeping both people and nature in mind, officials said.
The system is being developed under the leadership of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).
The system uses artificial intelligence, sensors and satellite maps to monitor and predict hazards like landslides, flash floods, forest fires and droughts in real time, the release said.
"Forty-six sensors will monitor soil movement, rain and moisture levels. Forty-eight river gauges will track water levels in key tributaries such as the Thodupuzha River and Pamba. Data will be fed live into a GIS-based control room at the District Emergency Operations Centre. Officials will use this information to send early warnings and guide safer infrastructure planning," it said.
Alerts will be sent through SMS, sirens, radio and a mobile app, in Malayalam, English, Tamil, Hindi, and tribal languages.
"The development of the IDRIS software and its field-level testing will begin soon," the district collector said.
The aim is to transform Idukki into India's most disaster-resilient hill district by combining sensor technology, GIS-based risk layers, and machine learning, she added.
Officials said Idukki is a district highly prone to disasters.
Since 2000, it has faced over 600 landslides, recurring floods, rising incidents of wild animal attacks, unsafe constructions, and forest fires, they said.
Taking all these risks into account, a comprehensive multi-hazard monitoring system is being set up in the district, officials added.

Union minister Jitendra Singh on Monday suggested use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in identifying IAS officers for domain-specific postings and targeted government projects.
The minister's proposal came during an event in which he launched the electronic civil list, 2025 in the form of an e-book -- a digital compendium of serving Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers across the country.
Singh, while unveiling the e-book, said the IAS continues to attract some of the finest minds in the country and plays a vital role in strengthening India's federal governance.
He highlighted the e-civil list as an important tool for transparency, offering a structured view of the country's administrative leadership.
Singh, the Minister of State for Personnel, proposed an AI-based search option into the e-civil list.
This enhancement, he noted, could allow domain-specific searches to help identify suitable officers for mission mode and other targeted government projects, while ensuring that access to such features remains appropriately restricted, according to a Personnel Ministry statement.
The minister also stressed the importance of regularly updating the digital list to maintain its relevance and utility.
The e-book, published by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), contains comprehensive details of IAS officers &mdash; including their name, batch, cadre, present posting, pay level, educational qualifications and retirement dates &mdash; as updated on January 1.
It also provides cadre-wise strength, the number of officers retiring over the next five years and appointment data from 1969 onwards.
For the first time, officers' photographs have been included in the digital document, the statement said.
Designed as a searchable PDF with embedded hyperlinks, the e-book offers a user-friendly interface that enables instant access to information.
"The civil list is an important resource not just for administrators and decision-makers but also for the general public," Singh said, adding that the move reflects the Centre's larger push for digital governance.
The minister described the initiative as part of the government of India's Digital India mission, aimed at modernising systems and improving citizen-centric services, the statement said.
By discontinuing the printing of hard copies, the department is also saving on government expenditure and contributing to eco-friendly governance practices, it added.
The DoPT, as the cadre-controlling authority of the IAS officers, compiles the civil list annually using inputs from central records and state cadres. The 2025 edition reflects a total authorised cadre strength of 6,877 officers, with 5,577 officers in active service across 25 state cadres.
The launch event was attended by several senior dignitaries, including Director General of the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) S N Tripathi, Director of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) Sriram Taranikanti and Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Rachna Shah, along with other senior officials.

In an incredibly bizarre news, a robot employed by a government firm in South Korea has, believe it or not, &lsquo;died by suicide&rsquo;.
The unnamed robot was discovered unresponsive after apparently throwing itself down a flight of stairs, according to a report by The Daily Mail on June 26.
The &lsquo;Robot Supervisor&rsquo;, appointed in August 2023, was found smashed and lying in the stairwell between the first and second floors of the Gumi City Council building.
Manufactured by Bear Robotics, a Californian startup specialising in robot waiters, the robot worked from 9 am to 6 pm and had its own civil service officer card, as reported by The Daily Mail.
The incident occurred on June 20, 2024, according to the report.

Even as the tech sector is riding the AI boom, India has less than 2,000 senior engineers who can build AI core products, revealed data from specialist staffing firm Xpheno, accessed by Moneycontrol. This comes, despite Technology product and IT services companies are reportedly training thousands of employees in artificial intelligence (AI) skills over the past year.
Core AI products and services include AI-based apps, tools and platforms, to name a few.
<h3>AI training</h3>
As per Moneycontrol, Tata Consultancy Services recently said it had trained 350,000 employees in AI skills; Infosys said eight out of 10 employees are AI-ready; Accenture is upskilling 250,000 employees in AI; HCLTech has trained 50,000 employees; Microsoft India plans to skill 2 million people in AI by 2025, and IBM has globally committed to train 2 million people in AI by 2026.
The Xpheno report further mentioned that the total active accessible Indian talent with the minimum required skills, experience and exposure to core AI is a little under 21,000. Meanwhile Nasscom claimed that 650,000-700,000 people are trained on AI across top-tier tech companies.
<h3>Skill Building</h3>
Moneycontrol quoted experts and said that there are other aspects of AI skilling - beyond building core technologies - that are more geared to embedding and integrating AI to improve daily tasks and productivity. This training is not restricted to engineering talent but is also about skilling other functions such as marketing and even HR.
&ldquo;The (AI) training that people are doing is more mass market," said Jagdish Mitra, a tech veteran and board member of the non-profit National Skill Development Corporation. "And that's not what will be valuable. What will be valuable is process-specific, application-specific and industry-specific skilling that will make a difference to how the skills are being used. It has to be more specific, otherwise it's like a man walking around with a hammer trying to find a nail.&rdquo;
Citing a recent Nasscom and BCG report, Sangeeta Gupta, senior VP at Nasscom told Moneycontrol that the AI talent will grow 15% year on year; and there is already a demand-supply gap of about 51% for niche skills that will help build core AI.

The Cabinet on Thursday approved the India AI Mission with an outlay of Rs 10,372 crore for five years to encourage AI development in the country, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said.
The approved corpus will be used to build a high-end scalable AI ecosystem in public-private partnership mode.
"With an outlay of Rs 10,372 crore, one very ambitious India AI Mission that will encourage AI segment and ongoing research in this field...has been approved by the cabinet," Goyal said.
The mission will be implemented through the IndiaAI Independent Business Division (IBD) under Digital India Corporation (DIC).
"PM (Narendra) Modi Ji has democratised technology. With AI mission, he will make compute power available to innovators, startups, students, and educational institutions," union IT and communications minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a statement.
The minister, briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, said supercomputing capacity, comprising over 10,000 GPUs (graphics processing unit), will be made available to various stakeholders for creating an AI ecosystem.
The demand for GPU-based servers has increased as they can process data at a higher speed compared to CPU-based servers.
Startups, academia, researchers and industry will be given access to the AI supercomputing infrastructure established under the India AI Mission, Goyal said.
Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar on social media platform X said that AI is poised to be the kinetic enabler for India&rsquo;s digital economy.
"This program will catalyse India&rsquo;s AI ecosystem and position it as a force shaping the future of AI for India and the world. AI is one of the greatest inventions of our time, India will play a major role in shaping its future. That is ModiKiGuarantee," Chandrasekhar said.
The minister said that the mission will benefit states like Kerala, which, for years, missed the bus in creating a robust tech ecosystem.

Nasscom Report: India's AI market set to reach to $17 billion by 2027

Investments in AI, particularly in data analytics, GenAI, and ML algorithms, are driving this growth. With a significant focus on digital content, data analytics, and supply chain

India's AI market, growing at a compounded annual growth rate of 25-35% is projected to reach $17-billion by 2027, according to a report.
This growth is fueled by multiple factors including increasing enterprise tech spending, India's growing AI talent base and a significant increase in AI investments, the report titled "AI Powered Tech Services: A Roadmap for Future Ready Firms; AI &amp; GenAI's Role in Turbocharging the Industry." The Nasscom report in partnership with BCG was released on Tuesday at the sidelines of the Nasscom Technology &amp; Leadership Forum 2024 here.
Globally, investments in AI have seen 24% CAGR since 2019, with 2023 seeing close to $83-billion investment, it said.
Majority of investments were made in data analytics, GenAI, and ML algos and platforms, as per the report.
Notably, around 93% of the investments made by Indian tech services and made-in-India product players focus on digital content, data analytics and supply chain, according to the report.
With increasing enterprise tech spending, technology service providers are developing a wide array of innovative AI-based services and solutions, expanding their offerings beyond traditional IT services, it stated.
This includes the development of proprietary AI &amp; GenAI platforms, tools for automation, data analytics solutions, and bespoke AI applications for specific industry verticals such as healthcare, banking &amp; finance, and retail, the report said.
According to the report, India has the second highest installed talent base with 420,000 employees working in AI job functions.
India also has the highest skills penetration with three times more AI skilled talent than other countries. The country ranks among the top five nations with a 14 times growth in individuals skilled with AI in the last seven years, it said.
As the investments in AI continues to increase, the demand for AI talent in India is also expected to grow at 15% CAGR till 2027, the Nasscom-BCG report said, adding the tech industry in India is already seeing more than 15% growth in AI/ML jobs over the past 12 months with positions such as AI engineers growing at 67% year-on-year.
Recognizing the importance of human capital in the AI journey, leading firms have invested heavily in upskilling and reskilling their workforce in AI and related technologies, with some organizations allocating USD 1-billion over the next three years dedicated to upskilling.
"Indian tech companies, with the advent of Generative AI, are expanding their portfolios beyond traditional IT and business process management to include AI-driven analytics, intelligent automation, and personalized customer interactions," said Debjani Ghosh, President at Nasscom as per PTI.
These companies are not just adopting AI; they are redefining their service offerings, creating more value for their clients, and setting new industry standards, she noted.
Accelerating this journey will require massive scale investment on AI skilling, investments in ethical and secure AI development practices and governance frameworks and a fundamental shift towards a human-centered approach, prioritizing transparency and human oversight, according to Ghosh. In a recent report by Hero Group company, Hero Vired, it has been revealed that a substantial majority of working professionals are increasingly apprehensive about job redundancy attributed to the emergence of new and evolving technologies. The report, which sourced insights from a wide-ranging survey encompassing 200,000 individuals including students, professionals, and academicians, shed light on the growing concerns within the workforce regarding job security amidst technological advancements.
The report delineated that an overwhelming 82% of working professionals expressed deep-seated worries about the potential of job redundancy due to the rapid evolution of technologies. This staggering revelation underscores the prevalent unease prevailing among employees about the transformative impact of these advancing technologies on job stability.
However, despite these prevalent concerns, the report indicated a proactive approach among 78% of working professionals who recognize the significance of upskilling. This inclination underscores an evolving consciousness among the workforce about the imperative need for continual learning and skill augmentation to remain pertinent in today's swiftly changing professional landscape.
Founder and CEO of Hero Vired, Akshay Munjal, emphasized the shifting focus of both professionals and companies towards sustainability, fitness, and mental health, asserting the burgeoning demand for job roles within these sectors.
Moreover, the report spotlighted that 39% of respondents firmly believe that proficiency in AI significantly influences career growth within their current organizations. Alarmingly, 43% of professionals expressed dissatisfaction with the dearth of adequate AI training provided by their employers, delineating a substantial chasm between perceived importance and the actual provisions for training in this pivotal technological domain.
Additionally, the report indicated that 43.5% of working professionals between the ages of 18 to 55, hailing from both metro and non-metro cities, voiced the need for upskilling every six months. An overwhelming 83% of respondents are convinced that upskilling, particularly in AI, will augment their job prospects in the future. Based on research carried out by the IBM, a minimum of 40% of the workforce will need to undergo reskilling within the upcoming 3 years.

In a study conducted by the Institute for Business Value (IBM), it was revealed that approximately 40 per cent of employees are anticipated to undergo reskilling within the next three years. This equates to around 1.4 billion individuals out of the global workforce of 3.4 billion, as indicated by World Bank data. This reskilling necessity arises mainly due to the influence of AI and automation.
The impact of AI is projected to be felt across all job levels, with a particular emphasis on entry-level positions or newcomers to the workforce. Notably, 77 per cent of surveyed executives acknowledged that AI's effects are already being observed in entry-level roles, and this trend is anticipated to intensify over the coming years.
IBM's research draws data from two comprehensive studies: one involving 3,000 C-level executives from 28 countries, and the other encompassing 21,000 workers across 22 countries.
The study underscores that employees who successfully transition their skills to align with technology-driven shifts experience an average premium of 15 per cent in revenue growth rate. Additionally, those who leverage AI in their roles exhibit a remarkable 36 per cent higher revenue growth rate compared to their peers who do not engage with AI.
