Google Discover to soon show air quality index card on Android and iOS

Google's new initiative offers real-time air quality checks through the AQI mini card on the Google Discover tab. This feature, beneficial for those with health concerns, is rolled out for both iOS and Android phones, with iOS promising richer details.

Google Discover to soon show air quality index card on Android and iOS

With the increasing concern of air pollution, particularly in places like Delhi NCR, being aware of air quality before stepping out is vital. Google's recent initiative aims to provide real-time air quality updates via the Google Discover tab.

Introducing the AQI Mini Card on Google Discover

9to5Google recently revealed that Google is launching the AQI mini card in the Discover tab for both iOS and Android phones. Although it's not yet available for tablets or the Pixel Fold, smartphone users will soon find this feature on the left side of their Google app.

This Discover feed will display a new mini card showing real-time air quality updates based on the user's location. Google also made a slight change in the Customize menu, replacing some switches with checkboxes.

Currently, there are three mini-cards in the Discover tab: Sports, Weather, and Finance. These cards provide users with updates on sports scores, the current weather, and market trends. The new Air Quality (AQI) mini-card lets users quickly check the air quality condition nearby. Using it is easy: just tap the AQI mini card to see the air quality data.

Benefits of the New Feature

This addition is more than just informative. It's especially useful for those sensitive to air pollution or those with breathing problems. Having the ability to check the air quality before going outside can be a real health advantage.

AQI Mini Card: iOS vs Android

The iOS version of the AQI mini card is expected to be slightly ahead of the Android version in terms of features. It will likely show more detailed information, such as the AQI level and air quality condition. Plus, it'll have an air quality indicator that changes color based on the air's condition.

At present, this feature is being tested among select beta users. There's a placeholder card in the Google app beta on both Android (version 14.32) and iOS that launches an "air quality" search when tapped.

According to the App Store's description, the card will show the AQI number and a colour-coded dot representing the air quality condition. It will also mention the location and time of the reading.

How to Check Air Quality on Google Discover

To check the air quality on Google Discover, simply open the Google app and swipe to the left to the Discover tab. You will see the AQI mini card at the top of the page. Tap on the mini card to see more information about the air quality in your area.

This new feature is currently in beta testing, but it is expected to be rolled out to all users soon.
