The ICC has come hard on India and Australia for maintaining slow over-rate in the final of World Test Championship final with Shubman Gill facing the brunt for criticising umpire's decision on social media.

One could term it rubbing salt on the wounds, but the Indian cricket team has been fined 100% of their match fee for maintaining slow over-rate in the World Test Championship final against Australia.

Why India were fined for slow over-rate in WTC final?

"India were ruled to be five overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration," ICC said in statement.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Severe punishment for Shubman Gill for criticising third umpire's decision

Meanwhile, there was more agony for Shubman Gill, with the Indian batter facing more sanctions from the ICC. The 23-year-old has been fined 15 percent of his match fee over and above the 100% fine imposed on the team.

Gill would have to pay money back as part of his punishment since he has effectively incurred 115 percent of match fee in fines.

According to clause 2.7 of ICC's code of conduct, social media posts by a player or support staff could amount to a breach of the code of conduct.

Were Australian cricket team fined for slow over rate?

Meanwhile, Australia too were fined a hefty 80% for maintaining a slow over-rate as well.

What ICC's code of conduct says about slow over-rate penalties?

According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.
