Mark Wood Reveals Rohit Sharma as Toughest Indian Batsman

London, Aug 27 (PTI) England's dynamic pacer, Mark Wood, has identified Rohit Sharma as the toughest Indian batsman he has faced, noting the significant challenge of bowling to him when he's in form. Wood humorously remarked that Rohit's bat seems to widen when he's in full flow.

Having missed the tightly contested five-match Test series against India due to a knee injury, Wood is eyeing a comeback with Durham in the County Championship this coming September, setting his sights on the Ashes series this winter.

In a candid conversation on The Overlap Cricket podcast, Wood shared his experiences challenging some of India's top batsmen. He mentioned, "At various points in my career, Rohit Sharma has been very challenging. There's always a feeling that with the short ball, as a bowler, I have a chance against him. Yet, if Rohit is in his zone, he can dominate."

Known for his pace, Wood, who can consistently clock over 145 kmph, also praised Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant. "Kohli is a phenomenal competitor with a particular vulnerability around the fourth or fifth stump. Despite that, it was always tricky to dismiss him," he shared.

While Rohit and Kohli have stepped back from T20I and Test formats, they continue to represent India in ODIs. Discussing Pant, Wood remarked on the wicketkeeper-batter’s fearless approach, which serves as his biggest asset. "Holding your nerve against Pant is crucial. His unpredictability works in his favor, and he boasts the ability to strike at will. You need to keep him guessing with variations like slower balls or aggressive bouncers," Wood advised.

On his plans, Wood is keen to participate in Durham's red-ball matches as preparation for the Ashes, which kicks off in Perth on November 21. "I'm aiming to feature for Durham in September, hoping to get a game or two," Wood disclosed on Betfair's Stick to Cricket podcast.

Reflecting on his recovery, Wood mentioned, "The injury was touch-and-go for the India Test. I bowled at Lord's, but the following day my knee swelled, requiring drainage. Since then, the focus has been on a cautious recovery ahead of winter."

England has not yet announced their Ashes squad, but Wood remains a pivotal figure in their strategy for the tour down under. He appreciated the careful management of his condition by the medical team, acknowledging their aim of getting him ready for Australia.
