West Indies Bowling Coach Rampaul Decries Player Injuries, Team Performance Against India

Ahmedabad, Oct 3 (PTI): West Indies bowling coach Ravi Rampaul expressed his disappointment on Friday as injuries sidelined crucial players Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph, weakening the team's lineup for the India tour. The West Indies squad faced significant pressure when Indian batsmen KL Rahul (100), Dhruv Jurel (125), and Ravindra Jadeja (104 not out) scored impressive centuries, helping India reach a commanding 448 for five, securing a massive 286-run lead at the end of the second day of the first Test.

Rampaul commented on the impact of losing Shamar and Alzarri, stating, "Losing them was very difficult. Johann Layne, being next in line after the Australia series, had a big role to fill. Unfortunately, this left our fast bowling department lacking additional support alongside Jayden Seales." He lamented the situation and mentioned that various strategies were attempted during the game but admitted, "There was not much there for the bowlers."

The West Indies, having chosen to bat first on a challenging pitch and managing only 162 runs, faced scrutiny. Reflecting on their choice, Rampaul mentioned, "If we had batted better in the initial hour of day one and avoided early dismissals, it might have changed the scenario. But losing wickets in that session placed us in a difficult situation."

The pitch's behavior also caught Rampaul by surprise, particularly regarding the limited assistance it offered to spinners early on. He noted, "I was definitely a little bit surprised. Spin didn't play much of a part early on, though some balls did spin later in the afternoon." He highlighted Ravindra Jadeja's aggressive approach against the spinners, stating that Jadeja effectively disrupted their lines by hitting over the top.
