Drama in League Cup: Bowen's Outburst & Wrexham's Triumph

Drama in League Cup: Bowen's Outburst & Wrexham's Triumph

London, Aug 27 (AP) West Ham's captain, Jarrod Bowen, needed intervention from teammates to restrain him after attempting to confront fans following a 3-2 defeat to Wolverhampton in the English League Cup on Tuesday. This defeat compounded the team's rough start this season.

In other matches during the league's second round, Premier League teams Leeds and Sunderland were ousted on penalties by lower-league teams Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield. Meanwhile, Wrexham clinched a stoppage-time victory over Preston with a 3-2 win.

Bowen later apologized via Instagram to West Ham's traveling supporters for his behavior at Molineux, after he and the team approached to applaud them. At one point, Bowen seemed to gesture at a fan and commented before trying to jump the advertising boards, only to be held back by teammates.

The England winger removed his captain's armband and left the pitch with his head lowered.

“I'm someone who is passionate and will fight every time I step on the pitch,” Bowen wrote. “But I need to set a better example and you fans know how much I love you and this club!” West Ham entered the match having already lost to Sunderland and Chelsea in the Premier League, conceding eight goals in those games, putting manager Graham Potter under early pressure.

Jørgen Strand Larsen struck in the 82nd and 84th minutes, shortly after entering as a substitute, to overturn the game for Wolves, who also lost their initial two league games.

Rodrigo Gomes initially put Wolves ahead, but goals by Tomas Soucek and Lucas Paqueta saw West Ham take the lead by the 63rd minute.

Top-flight Teams Eliminated Leeds missed all three penalties in a shootout, losing 3-0 to Sheffield Wednesday after a 1-1 draw.

Sunderland equalized late to draw 1-1 with Huddersfield, only to fall in the shootout 6-5.

Bournemouth became the fourth Premier League team to get knocked out after a 2-0 defeat to Brentford, another top-flight side. Brentford's goals came from Fábio Carvalho and Igor Thiago.

Wrexham's Journey Continues Wrexham only advanced to the second round after scoring two stoppage-time goals and taking a penalty shootout in the first round against Hull.

Owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the globally renowned Welsh team struck late to advance again. Second-half substitute Kieffer Moore netted the winner in the second minute of additional time against Preston.

Wrexham is guaranteed a showdown with England's top teams in the third round, with the draw scheduled for Wednesday following the conclusion of the second round matches, which include a visit from Manchester United to fourth-tier Grimsby. (AP)
