Former England captain Michael Vaughan critiques Shubman Gill's performance at Lord's while praising Ben Stokes' influential role in England's series lead. Despite setbacks, both teams' determination makes for an exciting series.

Vaughan Analyzes Gill and England's Test Series Dynamics

London, July 15 (PTI): Former England captain Michael Vaughan expressed his observations regarding India skipper Shubman Gill's performance during the second innings of the third Test at Lord's. Vaughan noted that Gill lacked his usual calm and didn't appear as technically solid during the match, despite showing remarkable form earlier in the series. The Indian team, showcasing commendable fighting spirit, put up a strong resistance on the final day.

In the series opener at Headingley, Gill scored a century, followed by another century and a double-ton in Birmingham, leading India to a 336-run victory. However, at Lord's, he managed scores of only 16 and 6, as India fell short by 22 runs despite an admirable fight led by Ravindra Jadeja and the lower order.

Vaughan wrote in his column for 'The Telegraph,' stating, "Shubman Gill did not look as technically tight or calm as usual when he came out to bat on the fourth evening. But his team fought so hard on Monday in a fabulous Test." Vaughan attributed England's thrilling win, giving them a 2-1 series lead, to the captain's indomitable winning mentality.

He praised England's captain Ben Stokes, highlighting his unique ability to never concede defeat, even during challenging phases. Stokes significantly influenced the match with his on-field performances, taking five wickets, scoring valuable runs, and executing a crucial run-out that turned the game.

"Stokes stuck with Joe Root on the first evening to ensure they built a tough score. His run-out before lunch on day three was pivotal as India was gaining control," noted Vaughan. "He picked up key wickets in both innings and delivered an epic spell early on the last day, dismantling Jasprit Bumrah's resistance. He just knows how to win vital moments in Test matches."

Vaughan mentioned that while this England team might not yet be among the greats, they play an exceptionally engaging brand of cricket. "England are a long way from being bracketed with the greats, but they play such extraordinary cricket and can turn games around from anywhere," he commented.

Despite acknowledging some significant shortcomings, Vaughan believes the series is shaping up to be unforgettable due to the competitive atmosphere. "India are 2-1 down but have won more sessions. However, Stokes and England's spirit have led to victories in two matches where they could have been well-beaten," he added.

He praised Stokes' bowling, particularly highlighting the delivery that entrapped KL Rahul LBW. "Stokes' bowling was exceptional, with pace, movement, and relentless length," praised Vaughan. "The return of Jofra Archer, bringing genuinely fierce pace, adds the finishing touch for England." The series continues to captivate cricket fans with its thrilling dynamics.
