Luis Suárez Apologizes After Leagues Cup Final Incident

Fort Lauderdale, USA, Sep 5 (AP) - Inter Miami striker Luis Suárez has issued an apology for his actions following his team's defeat to the Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final earlier this week. This incident becomes yet another addition to the long list of on-field transgressions over his storied career.

Suárez, a longtime teammate of Inter Miami’s star player Lionel Messi, was seen spitting towards a member of the Sounders' staff and grabbing at least one Seattle player by the neck during a postgame altercation on Thursday. Major League Soccer and Leagues Cup officials are currently investigating the incident, with potential sanctions looming for Suárez.

“First of all, I want to congratulate the Seattle Sounders on their Leagues Cup victory. But above all, I want to apologize for my behavior at the end of the match,” Suárez wrote on Instagram in Spanish. “It was a very tense and frustrating moment. Things happened right after the match that shouldn't have happened, but that doesn't justify my reaction. I was wrong and I sincerely regret it.

“It's not the image I want to portray, neither to my family, who are suffering because of my mistakes, nor to my club, which doesn't deserve to be affected by something like this. I feel bad about what happened and didn't want to miss the opportunity to acknowledge it and apologize to everyone who felt bad about what I did.”

Inter Miami responded with a statement on Thursday, although without naming individual players. The club stated it is cooperating with MLS and Leagues Cup officials to "ensure the situation is addressed appropriately" and extended thanks to their fans for their ongoing support. “Inter Miami condemns the altercations that took place following the conclusion of the Leagues Cup Final," the club noted. "These actions do not reflect the values of our sport, and we remain committed to upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship both on and off the pitch.”

Suárez's career is as colorful as it is successful. He played a pivotal role for Uruguay as they reached the World Cup semifinals in 2010, marking the end of a 20-year drought. He also helped Uruguay secure its first Copa America title in 16 years in 2011. His contributions were key in Atlético Madrid's first Spanish league title in seven years, clinched in 2021.

However, Suárez is also infamous for his more controversial actions, including a deliberate handball in the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals that cost Ghana a place in the semifinals. He has served bans for biting opponents on three occasions, the last being in 2014 when he bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup match.

In the current MLS season, Suárez has been involved in 16 goals, scoring six and assisting on 10 — a tally only bettered by Messi, who has scored 19 goals and provided 10 assists.

Suárez concluded his statement on Thursday optimistically, saying, “We know there's still a long season ahead, and we're going to work together to achieve the success this club and all its fans deserve. A hug to everyone.”
