Suryakumar Yadav Reflects on Recovery from Sports Hernia Surgery

Suryakumar Yadav Reflects on Recovery from Sports Hernia Surgery

New Delhi, August 26 (PTI): India's T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav recently shed light on his injury ordeal, which necessitated surgery followed by a six-week rehabilitation. He sees this enforced hiatus as a chance to refine himself before next month's Asia Cup. The 34-year-old underwent a sports hernia operation in Munich after being troubled by lower-right abdomen pain at the IPL's conclusion in June. Post-surgery, he recuperated at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Back at full strength, Suryakumar is set to lead the national team in the Asia Cup in the UAE from September 9. "I'm feeling good right now," Suryakumar explained in a BCCI video released on Tuesday. "In the past five to six weeks, I've followed a robust process and routines, and I'm feeling really well."

He emphasized the significance of a supportive environment during rehabilitation. "The essential thing during rehab is to have good people around who guide you well. I've utilized my rehab phases over the past few years to become my optimal self."

Upon recognizing the severity of his injury, Suryakumar recalled it resembled a past ailment. "It was identified towards IPL's end. The symptoms were similar to last year's, prompting me to conduct an MRI post-IPL. The results directed me to Germany for surgery," he disclosed.

Confident in his recovery roadmap due to past experiences, Suryakumar set to work, taking recovery one week at a time. "I'm primed and feeling good," he remarked.

Highlighting the well-structured rehabilitation and expert support at CoE, Suryakumar noted, "At CoE and previously at NCA, they truly understood my body's responses. Coaches and physios tailored workouts to my needs, planning meticulously, and allowing for steady progress."

Praising the CoE's comprehensive facilities, Suryakumar remarked, "The gym is expansive, accommodating 30-35 people simultaneously. The equipment is athlete-centric, perfect for rehab, or even for any contracted or targeted player looking to optimize training. It's the best I've seen in a long while."
