Suryakumar Yadav Penalized for Political Comments Post Asia Cup Match

Dubai, Sep 26 (PTI) Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav has been penalized 30 percent of his match fee due to his comments following the Asia Cup group match against Pakistan, where he referenced the military skirmishes between India and Pakistan in May, as stated by the tournament organizers on Friday.

Pakistan lodged a formal complaint with the ICC against Suryakumar for making political remarks after he dedicated India's victory over their traditional rivals on September 14 to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and the Indian armed forces.

Suryakumar contested the charge, maintaining his innocence, and was advised not to make any statements that could be perceived as political for the remainder of the tournament.

The proceedings involving the Indian skipper were overseen by ICC match referee Richie Richardson. Tensions between the two cricket powerhouses escalated, beginning with India's choice not to partake in a customary handshake with Pakistani players at the toss and after the matches, in a show of solidarity with the victims of Pahalgam.
