Supreme Court Reconsiders Involvement in Cricket Matters

The Supreme Court indicated a possible withdrawal from cricket disputes, acknowledging sports' commercial nature. Amid comparisons of court cases to cricket matches, a petition was withdrawn following the bench's reluctance to engage further.

Supreme Court Reconsiders Involvement in Cricket Matters

New Delhi, Oct 6 (PTI) — The Supreme Court stated on Monday that it is high time it refrains from intervening in sports matters, particularly cricket. The observation was made by a bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta.

While hearing a petition challenging a Madhya Pradesh High Court order involving a cricket association in the Jabalpur division, the bench commented, "There is nothing like sport now in cricket. It is a fact. It is all business."

Justice Nath humorously remarked to the lawyers present, "Today, we are playing cricket. Three-four matters. One is already adjourned for the second round. This is the second one. There are two more. How many test matches will you play today?"

The petitioner's counsel responded, noting the nation's obsession with cricket. "I think it is high time that this court should keep its hands off in cricket and badminton, volleyball, basketball," Justice Nath stated.

The counsel explained that these matters reach the apex court due to certain concerns, indicating, "The issue is, the stakes have become very high in all of these matters. In any game, which has become commercialised, that is bound to happen."

Despite the concerns raised, the bench expressed hesitation in entertaining the plea, leading the petitioner's counsel to request withdrawal of the plea. The bench granted the request for withdrawal.
