Ben Stokes Withdraws from The Oval Test Due to Injury Concerns

England's Ben Stokes won't play at The Oval due to a shoulder injury. Despite leading in wickets, he prioritizes Ashes recovery.

Ben Stokes Withdraws from The Oval Test Due to Injury Concerns

London, Jul 30 (PTI) - Throughout the first four Tests, Ben Stokes pushed the limits of his injury-plagued body to deliver critical overs for England. However, as the series finale approaches, this valiant leader acknowledges that the risk of further injury is too dire to play at The Oval.

Stokes, currently the series' highest wicket-taker with 17 dismissals, will be relegated to a spectator role, his charismatic presence sorely missed.

With Jofra Archer absent and the potential absence of Jasprit Bumrah on the opposing side, the climax of this captivating series has lost some of its allure.

Stokes’ herculean efforts at Lord's and Manchester have taken a toll on his right shoulder, resulting in a muscle tear. Although eager to participate at The Oval, scans revealed that playing further posed a significant risk, despite his willingness.

“It's about balancing risk and reward, and the risk was unacceptably high. I wouldn't place any of my players in such a position,” Stokes explained. “I’ll start rehab and focus on what's ahead, particularly aiming to be fully fit for the Ashes Down Under in six to seven weeks.”

Though disappointed at missing the series' concluding Test, Stokes maintains his characteristic humor. “It’s a significant tear in a muscle I can't pronounce,” he joked. Nonetheless, he admitted the emotional gravity of realizing the extent of his injury.

Stokes explored the possibility of playing solely as a batsman, but after conversations with the medical team and time for personal reflection, the decision was made to step back.

When asked about managing his workload differently, Stokes affirmed, “Absolutely not. On the field, I play to win and give my all. Injuries are part of being a professional sportsman, and there's no preventing them.”

Stokes remains confident in his team’s capabilities without him, as England prepares for expected seam-friendly conditions by selecting four fast bowlers. Jacob Bethell and Joe Root will offer part-time spin options.

“Without my bowling, we compensated with batting adjustments, maintaining our four-seamer strategy,” said Stokes. The pitch reportedly supports seamers, potentially benefiting England’s approach.

Reflecting on the Manchester draw decision, Stokes stands by the call to end play with 15 overs remaining, despite criticism. India declined his proposal, with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar nearing centuries.

“I have no regrets. Both sides acted within reason, and while unfortunate, it's behind us now. Let's not fixate on a brief game section when the series delivered exceptional cricket,” Stokes asserted.

Steering through a demanding five-Test series has proved taxing for Stokes, both physically and mentally.

“This series, often pushing to the final session, has been tough but remarkable. Both teams have shown immense character, showcasing their dedication to Test cricket,” remarked Stokes. As the series concludes, both teams continue to demonstrate unwavering commitment.
