Shubman Gill Emphasizes Calm Leadership for India ODI Captaincy

Shubman Gill is set to debut as India's ODI captain against Australia, inspired by Rohit Sharma's leadership. Gill underscores the importance of Sharma and Kohli's roles in the team, aiming for cohesive dynamics under coach Gautam Gambhir's guidance.

Shubman Gill Emphasizes Calm Leadership for India ODI Captaincy

New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI) India's newly appointed ODI captain, Shubman Gill, emphasized the importance of absorbing the "calmness" that his predecessor Rohit Sharma brought into the dressing room. Gill is preparing to lead the ODI squad against Australia later this month.

The 25-year-old Gill, who already captains the Indian Test team, will embark on his ODI captaincy journey with a three-match series in Australia from October 19 to 25.

"The calmness of Rohit bhai and the friendships that he created among the group, I want to imbibe that," Gill remarked, reflecting on his expanded role ahead of the second Test against the West Indies commencing on Friday.

Addressing the conjectures about the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom have retired from T20 Internationals and Tests, Gill emphasized their continued importance to the team.

While Kohli is currently in London and Rohit is in Mumbai, both are set to join the squad before their departure to Australia on October 15.

"The two have won so many games for India. Very few have so much skill and experience. We need them," Gill declared.

Gill expressed honor and humility regarding his elevation to ODI captain.

"It was announced after the first Test against the West Indies (in Ahmedabad), but I was informed a bit earlier. Leading India is an honor," Gill shared.

He also spoke about his rapport with head coach Gautam Gambhir, who is praised for orchestrating the ongoing transformation in Indian cricket.

"Our relationship is good. We discuss how to make players feel secure and also talk about preparing a pool of fast bowlers," Gill said.
