Shubman Gill Confident in Rohit and Kohli's 2027 World Cup Involvement

Shubman Gill, India's ODI captain, supports Rohit and Kohli's involvement in 2027 World Cup plans, valuing their experience. He aims to foster team unity and focus on consistent player selection.

Shubman Gill Confident in Rohit and Kohli's 2027 World Cup Involvement

New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI): India's recently named ODI captain, Shubman Gill, has expressed confidence in the continued participation of veteran players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the 2027 World Cup plans, highlighting their unparalleled skills and extensive experience.

Gill, who has taken over the ODI leadership role from the accomplished Rohit Sharma, aspires to foster friendships within the team, emulating Sharma's nearly four-year captaincy legacy. The 26-year-old Gill is also at the helm of India's Test squad.

When inquired about Rohit and Kohli's potential involvement in the 2027 World Cup, Gill was candid, unlike Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, who had previously avoided a definitive stance. "Certainly. The experience and number of victories they have brought India is unparalleled. Very few players worldwide possess their blend of skill and experience. Thus, I'm quite pleased," stated the emerging captain.

Despite their age—Rohit being 38 and Kohli 36—and retirement from Tests and T20 Internationals, both players are anticipated in an upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia from October 19 to 25.

Gill expressed a desire to emulate the calmness and camaraderie that Rohit brought to the dressing room. "Many qualities from Rohit Bhai inspire me. His calm demeanor and the bond he created among the group is something I cherish," he said.

Following Agarkar's announcement of Gill's captaincy after defeating the West Indies in the first Test in Ahmedabad, Gill disclosed receiving the news a few days prior. "I am thrilled to lead in this format and eager for the future while remaining in the present," he added. "I aim to conquer the forthcoming challenges, instead of dwelling on past achievements."

Gill, touted as a prospect for leading in all formats, acknowledged the pressures of managing multiple formats—highlighting mental fatigue. "Physically, I mostly feel fine. The mental expectations I set for myself sometimes pose a challenge," he remarked, emphasizing his goal to excel and win ICC titles in all formats.

With Gautam Gambhir stepping in as the head coach alongside Gill's elevation, they share a vision for creating a secure environment for players. "Our collaboration is straightforward," Gill stated. They aim to select a core 15-18 player group, ensuring consistent player selection while concentrating on building a robust fast-bowling team for tours to locations like South Africa, Australia, or New Zealand.

Gill, when questioned about his captaincy style—whether instinctive or meticulously planned—chose not to define himself, humorously suggesting that his teammates might answer better.
