Shreyas Iyer: India’s Reliable Middle-Order Batsman
Shreyas Iyer, once not a guaranteed choice for India’s Champions Trophy team, has firmly established himself as the team’s most dependable No. 4 in the batting order. Initially overlooked for the first ODI against England prior to the Champions Trophy, Iyer has since delivered impressive performances that underscore his prowess in the 50-over format. Following his decisive 79-run innings against New Zealand on Sunday, Iyer reflected on the personal growth he has experienced over the past year and a half, crediting it for his current success. Despite consistent displays in the ODI World Cup 2023, Iyer's position in the Indian lineup was not always secure. However, he persevered and solidified his place in the middle order. After the match against New Zealand, Iyer emphasized the importance of self-reliance, stating that he must advocate for himself rather than expecting others to do so. He shared, "It's always you versus you. No one else is going to rescue you." This mentality has been instrumental in his personal development, teaching him to take responsibility and instill confidence in himself through challenging situations. Iyer also highlighted the significance of trusting one's instincts and staying present without dwelling on past events, stating that these strategies have been beneficial over the last 18 months. Additionally, he discussed a crucial partnership that stabilized the Indian innings after the early dismissal of the top three batsmen. Partnering with Axar Patel, Iyer contributed to a vital stand of nearly 100 runs, which he described as essential given the match's context. "We focused on keeping the scoreboard ticking and took boundaries when possible to shift the momentum our way," Iyer explained, acknowledging Patel’s valuable 40-run contribution to the team’s cause.
