Sha'Carri Richardson, arrested for domestic violence in July, apologized to her boyfriend, Christian Coleman, on social media. Despite the incident, she competed soon after. The altercation involved a backpack scuffle, but Coleman declined to press charges.

Sha'Carri Richardson Apologizes After Domestic Incident Arrest

Washington, Aug 13 (AP) — Sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson has publicly addressed her recent arrest related to a domestic violence incident, using social media to apologize to her boyfriend, Christian Coleman.

On Monday night, Richardson shared a video on her Instagram account, admitting she placed herself in a “compromised situation.” By Tuesday morning, she followed up with a written apology directed at Coleman.

“I love him & to him I can't apologize enough,” wrote the reigning 100-meter world champion in all capital letters on Instagram, emphasizing that her apology “should be just as loud” as her “actions.” “To Christian I love you & I am so sorry,” she added.

The incident occurred on July 27, when Richardson was arrested on a fourth-degree domestic violence charge for reportedly assaulting Coleman at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. She spent over 18 hours in custody at the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington.

This arrest took place only a few days before she competed in the 100 meters at the U.S. championships in Eugene, Oregon.

In her social media video, Richardson emphasized her commitment to self-reflection, stating she intends “to run away but face everything that comes to me head on.”

According to the police report, the incident was flagged by a Transportation Security Administration supervisor who notified an officer about the disturbance between Richardson and Coleman, the 2019 world 100-meter champion.

Surveillance footage revealed Richardson grabbing Coleman's backpack with her left arm and yanking it away. She then appeared to block Coleman's path, leading to him being shoved into a wall.

The report further mentioned that Richardson seemed to throw an item at Coleman, believed by the TSA to be headphones.

The officer noted Coleman expressed his unwillingness to participate in the investigation, declining to be labeled as a victim. The Associated Press has reached out to Coleman for comment.

In her written apology, Richardson acknowledged that Coleman “came into my life & gave me more than a relationship but a greater understanding of unconditional love from what I've experienced in my past.”

Richardson's athletic achievements include winning the 100 meters at the 2023 world championships in Budapest, securing a silver medal at the Paris Games last summer, and contributing to a gold medal in the 4x100 relay at the Olympics.

Her career faced a setback when she missed the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after testing positive for marijuana during the U.S. Olympic trials. (AP)
