Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka Survives Scare at Wuhan Open

Wuhan, China – In an intense encounter at the Wuhan Open, top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka rallied back to defeat unseeded Rebecca Sramkova 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 on Wednesday. The defending champion, who boasts an undefeated record in Wuhan with titles in 2018, 2019, and 2024, faced an early setback but showcased her resilience to claim victory.

The US Open champion Sabalenka overcame her 68th-ranked opponent by clinching the opening game of the final set, eventually converting her second match point to secure the win in nearly two hours. "I knew that after that little break... it would not be easy to get back in my rhythm," Sabalenka mentioned in her on-court interview. "I'm really glad that in the second set I found my game and stepped in, and I think I played really great."

Sabalenka turned the match in her favor by breaking Sramkova's serve in the fourth game of the second set, establishing a 4-1 lead. She also showcased her defensive prowess by saving four break points in the seventh game. Sabalenka now is set to face No. 16 seed Liudmila Samsonova, who came back from behind to defeat 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Meanwhile, Jessica Pegula had to dig deep as she was broken twice while serving for the match in the third set against Hailey Baptiste. However, she managed to recover and clinch the match in a tense tiebreaker. Pegula, seeded sixth, edged her fellow American 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(6) on her seventh match point to advance to the third round. She will next face ninth-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova, who overcame American Ann Li 7-6 (5), 6-2.

No. 3 seed Coco Gauff effortlessly advanced into the next round with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory over Moyuka Uchijima in just 51 minutes, following her semifinal loss to champion Amanda Anisimova at the China Open last week. Additionally, qualifier Katerina Siniaková secured a win over Maya Joint 6-3, 6-1.

Eleventh-seeded Naomi Osaka was scheduled to play later in the day.
