At a CEAT panel discussion on Monday, the 38-year-old opened up about the challenges and mental strain of Test cricket, and how focusing on thorough preparation helped him cope over the years.

Rohit, who recorded an average of 40.58 while amassing 4,301 runs in 67 Tests, made the decision to retire from Test cricket in May. This followed his retirement from T20 Internationals a year earlier, during which he famously led India to a World Cup triumph.

"The game demands longevity," Rohit stated. "Especially in the Test format, lasting five days is both mentally challenging and draining. But as cricketers, we grow up with First-Class cricket, which inherently prepares us for these challenges from an early age."

Rohit went on to explain that young players might not recognize the importance of preparation early in their careers, but it becomes evident over time. "In the beginning, it's all about fun. But as you advance and meet senior players and coaches, they emphasize the critical nature of preparation," he remarked.

"When I started playing for Mumbai and then India, a lot of focus and time was on preparation. Once the game starts, it's about reacting to what’s in front of you. Preparation is crucial, not just in cricket, but in any aspect of life," he concluded.
