**Rishi Sunak Links Cricket’s Olympic Return to India's Rising Global Influence, Praises IPL's Transformative Impact** In a significant development for cricket, the sport will make a comeback at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, marking its return after more than a century. Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak attributed this milestone to India's expanding global influence while highlighting the transformative role played by the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Sunak, who was in Ahmedabad to attend the IPL final between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings, emphasized India's pivotal role in cricket's Olympic inclusion. "India’s passions and tastes now have a global impact. The return of cricket to the Olympics after 100 years is a testament to India’s influence," he stated. As an avid cricket enthusiast, Sunak lauded the IPL's revolutionary impact on the sport. "The IPL has become a dream destination for cricketers worldwide. It's been instrumental in boosting the women's game, encouraging more girls to participate through initiatives like the Women’s Premier League," he noted. Sunak also reflected on the IPL's influence on English cricket, citing the recent accomplishments of players like Jacob Bethell. "English players have improved through IPL experiences. I recently watched Jacob Bethell deliver an outstanding performance at Edgbaston, demonstrating how the IPL has enhanced his skills," he said. Bethell, representing Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, showcased his prowess with a 53-ball 82 during England's dominant win over the West Indies in an ODI series opener. The former Prime Minister's support for Royal Challengers Bangalore was evident. "I’ve always backed RCB. ‘Ee Sala Cup Namde’ is a phrase that’s dear to me, and I’m hopeful it becomes a reality this season," said Sunak, whose personal connection to Bangalore stems from his wife Akshata Murty, daughter of Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy. Sunak’s admiration for cricket legends was palpable, particularly his fondness for Virat Kohli. "I'm a huge Virat Kohli fan. A signed bat from him, gifted by Minister S. Jaishankar during my time at Downing Street, is one of my prized possessions," he revealed. Emphasizing cricket's diplomatic potential, Sunak recalled interactions with leaders like Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and India’s Narendra Modi, underlining cricket as a medium that can strengthen international ties. With India touring England this summer, Sunak expects the series to further bolster the friendship between the two nations.
