R Ashwin in Talks with CSK for IPL Future Amid Potential Moves

R Ashwin in Talks with CSK for IPL Future Amid Potential Moves

Chennai, Aug 8 (PTI) - Senior Indian off-spinner R Ashwin is reportedly in talks with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) regarding his future with the Indian Premier League franchise, amidst rumblings that he might consider moving on. Conversations between Ashwin and the CSK leadership have taken place, aimed at understanding his potential role in upcoming seasons, with over two months remaining before player retention deadlines are finalized. "It's too soon to arrive at any decisions about a player's future. We haven't even been given the final date for retention yet, so there's plenty of time," an IPL insider disclosed to PTI. "Having pre-auction discussions with players is strategic, especially with seasoned players like Ashwin. It's a mutual dialogue to understand his prospective involvement with the team for next season," they added. At 38, Ashwin retired from international cricket last year. Previously, he was a standout performer for CSK between 2009 to 2015, before moving to the now-folded Rising Pune Super Giant and later the then-Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in 2018. Though Ashwin was acquired by CSK for Rs 9.75 crore in the mega auction prior to the 2025 season, he only managed to secure seven wickets across nine games, in what was an underwhelming campaign for the team as they concluded the season fifth in standings, securing seven wins to match their seven losses. There's also buzz about CSK potentially adding wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson to their roster. Samson, presently aligned with Rajasthan Royals, is rumored to be exploring moves. "We have some players in mind to bolster our lineup next season. However, no concrete discussions have commenced given the extended runway before retention procedures unfold," the source clarified.
