Oscar Piastri Faces Setback in Intense US Grand Prix Battle

Oscar Piastri's fifth-place finish in the US Grand Prix allowed Max Verstappen and Lando Norris to narrow the championship gap. With five races left, Piastri's prior comfortable lead is now under threat, raising questions about McLaren's driver prioritization strategy.

Oscar Piastri Faces Setback in Intense US Grand Prix Battle

Austin, Oct 23 (AP) Oscar Piastri is eager to exit Texas after a challenging outing at the United States Grand Prix.

On a day when his usual speed was absent, the McLaren Formula 1 championship leader saw his points advantage shrink significantly. Teammate and title contender Lando Norris, along with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, both gained critical points at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday.

Verstappen clinched his third win in four races, with Norris following in second place. Meanwhile, Piastri could only muster a fifth-place finish. What appeared to be a straightforward path to his first championship earlier this summer is now turning into a tense and demanding battle with just five races remaining, starting next weekend in Mexico City.

Piastri maintains a lead of 14 points over Norris and 40 over Verstappen, but the cushion is far from comforting. "I'd still rather be where I am than the other two, but obviously this weekend was not what I wanted or expected," Piastri admitted.

His troubles began on Saturday when he collided with Norris in the first turn of the sprint race, resulting in both McLaren cars being sidelined. Verstappen capitalized on the incident by winning the sprint, further exacerbating the tensions at McLaren that surfaced after a first-lap incident in Singapore.

Starting sixth on Sunday, Piastri could only advance one position. The 1-2 finish of Verstappen and Norris marked the fourth consecutive race in which Piastri has conceded points to his rivals.

In four races, Verstappen has slashed a 104-point deficit to just 40. This sequence includes the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Piastri's race ended prematurely with a first-lap crash.

"Max and Red Bull have found a lot of pace since the summer break. We saw flashes of it at the start of the year, but it's been consistent since then," Piastri observed.

Before the race, Piastri expressed confidence that the team would not prioritize one driver over the other for the championship pursuit. However, questions resurfaced after his subpar performance on Sunday.

"I don't think so. We are so incredibly tight, and both of us have said we want an opportunity to try and fight for the championship because we deserve it," Piastri told Sky Sports. "I think it is far too close to start picking one or the other."

McLaren's team principal, Andrea Stella, emphasized that the team should relish the opportunity to contend for a drivers' championship.

"It is a privilege to be there, we have the pace to be there. It is about execution, believing in it, and we do believe," Stella noted. "We never want to lose the joy of doing that. The tension is part of the game."
