Crystal Palace Stuns Liverpool to Win Community Shield

London, Aug 11 (AP)

Crystal Palace has etched its name into Wembley folklore once again by toppling Premier League giants Liverpool to claim the Community Shield title. After their remarkable triumph over Manchester City in the FA Cup final last May, Palace stunned the football world once more with a narrow 3-2 victory in a penalty shootout, following a thrilling 2-2 draw in regulation time.

“Incredible,”

exclaimed Palace's goalkeeper Dean Henderson, whose heroics included two penalty saves. “We showed up today — they were the favorites with their exceptional roster. Two trophies in three months? That's incredible. We're ready for the next chapter of history.”

The shootout saw Mohamed Salah misfire, sending Liverpool's hopes plummeting from the first kick, while Palace substitute Justin Devenny clinched the title with a thunderous shot into the top corner, igniting euphoria among Palace fans.

The victory builds upon Palace's historic FA Cup win, marking their second major accolade in a matter of months, and setting the stage for the upcoming English top-flight season.

It was an intense match characterized by Palace's tenacity and spirit. Twice Liverpool took the lead via new signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong, yet Palace's resilience shone through with goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr.

“A big performance,”

remarked Palace coach Oliver Glasner. “We matched Liverpool almost evenly. The team's performance was a matter of immense pride.”

Ekitike, acquired from Eintracht Frankfurt for $93.5 million, showcased his class with a superb early strike, marking his debut goal for the Reds within four minutes. However, Mateta coolly converted a penalty to level the playing field after Sarr was brought down by Virgil van Dijk.

Frimpong restored Liverpool's lead with a freakish goal during a cross attempt that perplexed Henderson. Yet Sarr, notorious for his knack of scoring against Liverpool, found the net again in the 77th minute with a powerful close-range shot, utilizing the post for assistance.

With the game tied and no extra time allotted, the fate was left to penalties. Following Salah's miss, Henderson denied Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, setting the stage for Devenny’s decisive strike.

This accomplishment comes amid a challenging period for Palace, which faces a legal battle following its demotion from the Europa League to the UEFA Conference League due to ownership conflicts. A verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport is anticipated soon.

Meanwhile, Liverpool, fresh from securing their 20th league title, invested heavily in the transfer market, with new acquisitions showcasing varying degrees of impact at Wembley. Manager Arne Slot acknowledged the elevated expectations surrounding the club as they embark on the new season.

The match held a poignant undertone with a tribute to Diogo Jota and his late brother, Andre Silva, but proceedings were disrupted by crowd disturbances. As a tribute, Liverpool has retired Jota's No. 20 jersey.
