World wrestling body relaxes deadline for India to send final entries for World Championships

United World Wrestling (UWW), the principal governing body in wrestling, has agreed to extend the deadline request by WFI's ad-hoc committee to send grapplers' names for the World Championships.

On July 28, the ad-hoc committee had requested that the August 16 deadline be pushed to August 26 for sending India's final entries as they are yet to hold trials before wrestlers are finalised.

Ten days later, on August 8, the UWW responded that India can send the strength of their contingent by August 16 and the final names can be sent later.

An ad-hoc committee official was quoted by the Hindustan Times as saying, 'This means UWW has agreed to our request in principle. We will send the entries by number soon. The trials can then be conducted by the new WFI dispensation at a suitable date.'

The Hindustan Times report further stated that the trials for the World Championships will be held under the supervision of the new Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) office-bearers, who will be elected on August 12.

The relaxation comes as a relief for wrestlers who took part in Asian Games trials last month and had asked for a gap before the World Championships trials are conducted so as to have ample time to recover.
