Wimbledon 2023: Roger Federer's Championship contender is the most unlikely of choices

Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer has picked his favourite to win this year's grass-court Grand Slam.

Speaking at an event in London, Federer was all praises for his longtime rival and Briton Andy Murray, pegging him as one of the contenders for the Wimbledon title in 2023.

'I’m a big fan of Andy’s and I wish him all the best for Wimbledon. That’s his best surface in my mind, especially nowadays,' the 41-year-old said.

He commended Murray's recent Surbiton win saying, 'He won a Challenger the same week as Novak got to this incredible record of 23 slams and Andy’s plugging away at Surbiton – that also deserves so much respect.'

Federer wished Murray the best for the grass court season, adding, 'So I hope he wins many, many rounds at Wimbledon in a couple of weeks. Andy is a special man and I’m very happy he’s still able to play. He loves it. He truly loves it.'

Andy Murray has been a home favourite going into the Wimbledon Championships for the past 15 years, with his first title coming against current defending champion Novak Djokovic in 2013.

Murray, who has competed with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, for the majority of his career, has been sidelined for the past few years due to a recurring hip injury.

However, 2023, has seen him return to the ATP Tour with a renewed ferocity, with close-call wins in several of his matches.
