Unvaccinated Novak Djokovic unable to travel to New York for the US Open

World number 6 Novak Djokovic announced his withdrawal from this year's US Open on Thursday, hours before the draw for the event was revealed.

Djoko, who has won the tournament thrice, took to Twitter and wrote 'Sadly, I will not be able to travel to New York this time for the US Open.' He though wished luck to his fellow players, and said he would 'keep in good shape and positive spirit and wait for an opportunity to compete again.'

The 21-time Grand Slam champion still cannot enter the United States due to his unvaccinated status and will now have to wait until 2023 to increase his Grand Slam tally.

Djokovic skipped the Australian Open in January after being deported from that country and needed to sit out two events in the United States earlier this year, along with tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati earlier this month. He though won the Wimbledon in July this year.
